Obliged to be Difficult by Tim Rowse Pdf

Since the 1967 constitutional referendum, Australian governments have moved towards policies of indigenous self-determination. Obliged to be Difficult, first published in 2000, presents the central issue of self-determination as seen by Dr H.C. Coombs, the most important policy maker since the referendum: through what political mechanisms will indigenous Australians find their own voice? Coombs was singularly influential within government in the years 1967 to 1976, and he remained a tireless critic and policy advocate from 1977 to 1996. Rowse's narrative of his work, drawing on many unpublished sources, illuminates the interplay of government policy with indigenous practice. This book is both an account of government policies and a biographical slice of an outstanding Australian. In attempting a critical celebration of Coombs' vision and methods, it invites informed reflection on the issues of land rights, sovereignty and reconciliation in these conservative, and highly anxious, times.

Women and the Second World War in France, 1939-1948 by Hanna Diamond Pdf

This is the first book (in either English or French) to offer readers an overview of women's experience of the Second World War and its immediate aftermath in France. It examines objectively the part that women played in both collaboration and resistance, synthesising much recent scholarship on the subject in French and English, and drawing on the author's own extensive research (including oral testimony) in Toulouse, Paris, and West Brittany. The findings are complex, and the immensely varied testimony challenges easy generalisation. This will be relevant for courses on French studies, French and European history and Women's studies.

Mapping Central Asia by Sébastien Peyrouse Pdf

With renewed American involvement in Afghanistan, Pakistan's growing fragility, and China's rise in power in the post-Soviet space, Central Asia-South Asia relations have become central to understanding the future of the Eurasian continent. Mapping Central Asia identifies the trends, attitudes, and ideas that are key to structuring the Central Asia-South Asia axis in the coming decade. Structured in three parts, the book skillfully guides us through the importance of the historical links between the Indian sub-continent and Central Asia, the regional and global context in which the developing of closer relations between India and Central Asia has presented itself since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the precise domains of Indo-Central Asian cooperation, and studies three conflict zones that frame Indo-Central Asian relations: the Kashmir question; the situation in Afghanistan; and fear of destabilization in Xinjiang. The international line-up of established scholars convincingly demonstrate the fundamental necessity to define the Indian approach on these issues and provide cutting-edge insights on the tools needed to understand the solutions for the decade to come.

Public Enterprise Management And Privatisation by Laxmi Narain Pdf

A number of public enterprise (PE) executives have long felt the need for a book which would provide necessary information and analysis of various dimensions of PE management and privatisation. The book provides at one place, a precise and authoritative account of the concept, policy, and analysis of major issues confronting PEs. Public ownership per se does not make PE performance sub-optimal. The operation of the Government system, of which PE is a sub-system, has not been conducive to performance. During the last six decades, inadequate political will and vested interests have come in the way of freeing PEs from excessive and throttling controls, and demoralising accountability. Not letting the managers manage with the freedom required in the liberalised and globalised set-up is the problem. The multifarious and complex managerial problems of PEs, which get compounded by faltering moves towards privatisation, cannot be wished away. These have been considered in the book at some length. The book, first published in 1980, continues to be a standard work on the subject. This latest edition has been revised by Dr. R.K.Mishra, Director, Institute of Public Enterprise,Hyderabad.

Trek: Studies about the Mobility of the Pioneering Population at the Cape by PJ van der Merwe Pdf

This work on the pioneering history of the Boers in the Cape Colony (South Africa) before the Great Trek (1835-1846) is primarily based on research in various archives and libraries. However, the author PJ van der Merwe (1912-1979) found it desirable to personally visit different areas mentioned in the book to get to know the country and the people better and to gather oral tradition and personal information. In carrying out this fieldwork during 1938 and 1939, the author covered 15,000 miles by car and questioned hundreds of people (old pioneers, farmers, teachers, magistrates, school inspectors, livestock inspectors, surveyors and police agents). This investigation not only enabled him to better interpret the sometimes fragmentary data found in the archives and old travel descriptions, but also served to supplement it.

A Dual Approach to Ocean Governance by Yoshifumi Tanaka Pdf

Taking the North-East Atlantic Ocean as an example of regional practice, this book addresses the dual approach to ocean governance in international law. It examines the interaction between zonal and integrated management approaches and the conservation of marine living resources and marine biological diversity. The study examines the limitations of the traditional zonal approach and suggests new possibilities for conformity between sovereign states, international law and sustainable development.

Narrative of a forced journey through Spain and France, as a prisoner of war, in the years 1810 to 1814 by Major-General Lord Andrew Thomas Blayney Pdf

Major-General Lord Andrew Thomas Blayney although previously a successful commander of his own regiment the 89th Regiment of Foot of the British through-out the early stages of the Peninsular war, he is best known for his narrative of events after his capture by Polish forces fighting under the flag of Napoleonic France. Blayney was the leader of an ill-fated Anglo-Spanish force which was assigned the task of attacking from Cadiz toward Malaga, culminating the battle of Fuengirola on 15th October 1810. Outnumbering his Polish foes by a huge margin, a series of unfortunate accidents on the allied side and brave and heroic resistance on the Polish side led to a debacle and his capture. It should be noted that this was far from the only amphibious disaster led by the British in the Peninsular Wars that should throw further perspective on the victories of the main British army under Wellington. Blayney’s narrative along with some idiosyncratic spelling recounts his journey from Andulusia to Verdun in the north-east of France. During his journey from one outpost to another as a paroled prisoner he meets a number of famed French generals, as befitted his rank, such as Sébastiani, Kellermann, Belliard and even Marshal Bessiéres who treat him on the whole well. He winds his way through the countryside, and he tells many tales of the people and surroundings that he finds himself somewhat forcibly journeying through. The main strength of the narrative is the author’s eye to detail and his flair for recounting a tale, along with the real rarity of accounts from the point of view of an English prisoner of war. Published in two volumes this is the first volume.

Law of Misstatements by Kit Barker,Ross Grantham,Warren Swain Pdf

2013 was the 50th anniversary of the House of Lords' landmark decision in Hedley Byrne v Heller. This international collection of essays brings together leading experts from five of the most important jurisdictions in which the case has been received (the United Kingdom, the United States, New Zealand, Canada and Australia) to reappraise its implications from a number of complementary perspectives-historical, theoretical, conceptual, doctrinal and comparative. It explores modern developments in the law of misstatement in each of the jurisdictions; examines the case's profound effects on the conceptual apparatus of the law of negligence more generally; explores the intersections between misstatement liabilities in contract, tort, equity and under statutory consumer protection provisions; and critically assesses the ways in which advisor liabilities have come to be limited and distributed under systems of 'joint and several' and 'proportionate' liability respectively. Inspired by Hedley Byrne, the purpose of the collection is to reflect on the case's echoes, effects and analogues throughout the private law and to provide a platform for thinking about the ways in which liabilities for misstatement and pure economic loss should be modelled in the modern day.
