Observing the Volcano World by Carina J. Fearnley,Deanne K. Bird,Katharine Haynes,William J. McGuire,Gill Jolly Pdf

This open access book provides a comprehensive overview of volcanic crisis research, the goal being to establish ways of successfully applying volcanology in practice and to identify areas that need to be addressed for future progress. It shows how volcano crises are managed in practice, and helps to establish best practices. Consequently the book brings together authors from all over the globe who work with volcanoes, ranging from observatory volcanologists, disaster practitioners and government officials to NGO-based and government practitioners to address three key aspects of volcanic crises. First, the book explores the unique nature of volcanic hazards, which makes them a particularly challenging threat to forecast and manage, due in part to their varying spatial and temporal characteristics. Second, it presents lessons learned on how to best manage volcanic events based on a number of crises that have shaped our understanding of volcanic hazards and crises management. Third, it discusses the diverse and wide-ranging aspects of communication involved in crises, which merge old practices and new technologies to accommodate an increasingly challenging and globalised world. The information and insights presented here are essential to tapping established knowledge, moving towards more robust volcanic crises management, and understanding how the volcanic world is perceived from a range of standpoints and contexts around the globe.

Monitoring Volcanoes in the North Pacific by Kenneson Gene Dean,Jonathan Dehn Pdf

This book is a visual learning experience as recorded on satellite images of volcanic eruptions and a manual describing how it is used for operational satellite monitoring. The atlas shows examples of the largest eruptions worldwide. The book fills a huge gap in the science of volcano remote sensing. A CD-ROM is included containing all the images and an associated website which will be regularly updated, showing results from new and current eruptions.

The Decade Volcanoes and Us by B. J. Deming Pdf

What are the Decade Volcanoes, and are they going to kill us? There's no quick and easy answer to that question, other than "dangerous" and "maybe." This book helps you get started on your own investigations into these beautiful but hazardous fire mountains. It explains what the 1990s Decade Volcano program was and why it got started. Then you'll meet the sixteen volcanoes (seventeen, actually, but they made the two Russian volcanoes a single entry). Besides basic facts, written in plain English by an informed layperson, there are also links to videos and to much authoritative online background material and monitoring websites. If technical details are your thing, you'll find an extensive reference section at the end of the book.

Environmental Hazards by Keith Smith,Carina J. Fearnley,Deborah Dixon,Deanne K. Bird,Ilan Kelman Pdf

The seventh edition of Environmental Hazards provides a much expanded and fully up-to-date overview of all the extreme environmental events that threaten people and what they value in the 21st century globally. It integrates cutting-edge materials to provide an interdisciplinary approach to environmental hazards and their management, illustrating how natural and human systems interact to place communities of all sizes, and at all stages of economic development, at risk. Part 1 defines basic concepts of hazard, risk, vulnerability and disaster and explores the evolution of hazards theory. Part 2 employs a consistent chapter structure to demonstrate how individual hazards occur, their impacts and how the risks can be assessed and managed. This extensively revised edition includes: Fresh perspectives on the reliability of disaster data, disaster risk reduction, risk and disaster perception and communication, and new technologies available to assist with environmental hazard management The addition of several new environmental hazards including landslide and avalanches, cryospheric hazards, karst and subsidence hazards, and hazards of the Anthropocene More boxed sections with a focus on both generic issues and the lessons to be learned from a carefully selected range of up-to-date extreme events An annotated list of key resources, including further reading and relevant websites, for all chapters More colour diagrams and photographs, and more than 1,000 references to some of the most significant and recent published material New exercises to assist teaching in the classroom, or self-learning This carefully structured and balanced textbook captures the complexity and dynamism of environmental hazards and is essential reading for students across many disciplines including geography, environmental science, environmental studies and natural resources.

The GOES-R Series by Steven J. Goodman,Timothy J. Schmit,Jaime Daniels,Robert J. Redmon Pdf

The GOES-R Series: A New Generation of Geostationary Environmental Satellites introduces the reader to the most significant advance in weather technology in a generation. The world’s new constellation of geostationary operational environmental satellites (GOES) are in the midst of a drastic revolution with their greatly improved capabilities that provide orders of magnitude improvements in spatial, temporal and spectral resolution. Never before have routine observations been possible over such a wide area. Imagine satellite images over the full disk every 10 or 15 minutes and monitoring of severe storms, cyclones, fires and volcanic eruptions on the scale of minutes. Introduces the GOES-R Series, with chapters on each of its new products Provides an overview of how to read new satellite images Includes full-color images and online animations that demonstrate the power of this new technology

The 2020-21 Eruption of La Soufrière Volcano, St Vincent by R.E.A. Robertson,E.P. Joseph,J. Barclay,R.S.J. Sparks Pdf

Volcanic eruptions are complex and inherently uncertain, making the management of a potentially explosive eruption on a small island with limited resources extremely difficult. This volume presents scientific findings from the 2020–21 eruption of La Soufrière Volcano, on the island of St Vincent in the Eastern Caribbean. This involved three months of effusive activity that escalated rapidly to 13 days of explosive activity, beginning with an intense two days of near-continuous ash venting and explosions. The book contains an introduction and 17 papers, split into two parts: the first presents geological and volcanological advances, whereas the second documents and analyses the impacts of the eruption and the challenges presented for the management of the volcanic crisis. This volume represents both significant contributions to the knowledge of the Soufrière eruptive system and important insights into the ways and means by which volcanic eruptions of this type impact on populations at risk. It also provides detailed insights into the most effective communication processes through this type of crisis.
