This book explains why a high-tech nation with advanced military technologies came to rely on the everyday media habits performed by soldiers and civilians. Daniel Mann argues that the intensification of the security regime in Palestine, and the increasingly personal use of media technologies by both soldiers and civilians, are deeply entangled. The book traces how, beginning in the 1990s, the integration of media into the lives of civilians and Israeli soldiers enabled Israel to transfer responsibilities to individual users, who in turn became legally and ethically liable for state abuses of power. Drawing on declassified documents, found footage, and social media, Mann shows how both media and warfare have been remodelled around the figure of the defensive, isolated, and insular 'individual'. Mann suggests that the focus on representations and their close visual analysis paradoxically hinders our ability to understand media. Instead of zooming into fine details, we must step back to reveal the assemblage of images, users, and infrastructure that together serve to maintain the racial, legal and aesthetic divide between Israel and Palestine.

STUDY HABITS The research reported in this thesis makes a modest study of Study Habits in post-graduate students in relation to certain important social and psychological factors. The sociological variables include ethnicity, faculty and gender while the psychological variables consist of adjustment, aspiration, and parental support. The data of study habits and use of library, adjustment, aspiration and parental support were collected from 400 post-graduate students drawn from four faculties namely Arts, Science, Commerce and Medicine. Each faculty was represented by 100 cases divided into an equal number of tribal, non-tribal, male and female cases. In addition to the above noted psychological variables, the academic achievement of the student was also taken into account. The marks obtained by the students in their last examination were considered as a measure of academic achievement. The data obtained were analyzed to measure the extent of Study Habit and Use of library among Post Graduate students of four faculties. Besides, an attempt was made to examine the main and interaction effect of ethnicity, faculty and gender on two main dependent variables namely Study Habits and Use of Library. Furthermore, the relationship of Study Habits and Use of Library was examined with adjustment, aspiration and parental support. Inter-relationship of Study Habits and Use of Library was also studied and those two variables were correlated with academic achievement.

This volume explores the phenomenology of broken habits and their affective, social, and involuntary dimensions. It shows how disruptive experiences impact self-understanding and social embeddedness. The chapters in this volume investigate the epistemic and existential relevance of breakdown of habits and the corresponding kinds of self-understanding available to the agent. The first part focuses on the double-sidedness of habitual life. On the one hand, habits allow us to arrange and navigate in a familiar home world; on the other hand, habits can take hold of us in such a way that we lose our sense of autonomy. The contributors argue that habitual agency is structurally carried by a dynamic that entails both freedom and necessity. As habits enable us to inhabit and thus acquire a world, they also affectively provide a texture and a background for our feeling at home in the world. The chapters in Part 2 focus on the breakdowns of our habitual social and technological life forms and the phenomenology of their affective texture. History and habitual learning are sedimented in our body memory and in our language, and these sedimented layers are partly out of our direct control. Part 3 focuses on the structural openness of habits in relating to one’s past and one’s traumatic experiences. Part 4 reflects on the ways in which we might become aware of and thus transform or appropriate our culturally given habits. Phenomenology of Broken Habits will appeal to researchers and advanced students working in phenomenology, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of psychology.
