Ode to My First Car by Robin Gow Pdf

By the critically praised author of A Million Quiet Revolutions, this YA contemporary sapphic romance told in verse is about a bisexual teen girl who falls in and out of love over the course of one fateful summer. It’s a few months before senior year and Claire Kemp, a closeted bisexual, is finally starting to admit she might be falling in love with her best friend, Sophia, who she’s known since they were four. Trying to pay off the fine from the crash that totals Lars, her beloved car, Claire takes a job at the local nursing home up the street from her house. There she meets Lena, an eighty-eight-year-old lesbian woman who tells her stories about what it was like growing up gay in the 1950s and ’60s. As Claire spends more time with Lena and grows more confident of her identity, another girl, Pen, comes into the picture, and Claire is caught between two loves–one familiar and well-worn, the other new and untested.

Horsepower by Joy Priest Pdf

Priest’s debut collection, Horsepower, is a cinematic escape narrative that radically envisions a daughter’s waywardness as aspirational. Across the book’s three sequences, we find the black-girl speaker in the midst of a self-imposed exile, going back in memory to explore her younger self—a mixed-race child being raised by her white supremacist grandfather in the shadow of Churchill Downs, Kentucky’s world-famous horseracing track—before arriving in a state of self-awareness to confront the personal and political landscape of a harshly segregated Louisville. Out of a space that is at once southern and urban, violent and beautiful, racially-charged and working-class, she attempts to transcend her social and economic circumstances. Across the collection, Priest writes a horse that acts as a metaphysical engine of flight, showing us how to throw off the harness and sustain wildness. Unlike the traditional Bildungsroman, Priest presents a non-linear narrative in which the speaker lacks the freedom to come of age naively in the urban South, and must instead, from the beginning, possess the wisdom of “the horses & their restless minds.” FROM "RODEO" The four-wheeler is a chariot. Horse-wraiths Kicking up a plume of spirits in the dirt behind us. Her arms kudzu around my middle. Out here, In the desert, everything is invisible. Only the locusts’ flat buzz gives Them away. Everything native & quieting Perennial & nighthawk black As we ride through: the cowgirls, The witch & the water sky-mirror-split, The severity of squall lines. Also, the lips Parting air like lightning & the girl Blowing bubbles—in each one a rainbow.

And when they meet Gooseberry—a feisty stray dog who seems as wary of strangers as B does—B feels an instant connection. Gooseberry is anxious and barely lets B pet him, let alone train him. Will Gooseberry ever feel at ease with B? And how can B teach Gooseberry to trust, when they know so little about trust themself? Gooseberry is a heartwarming story by the acclaimed author of Dear Mothman about finding family, finding hope, and—most of all—finding and accepting yourself.

A Gift from Seraphina by Kathy O'Leary Pdf

I have travelled for more than 20 years and visited 51 countries on my own. I don't have a camera but write poems instead! My poems cover a huge gamut of experiences. I have captured the weird, the wonderful, heartbreaking, humorous, inspirational and moving aspects of my travelling and life. I have written poems celebrating the inner child in all of us, the secret of Happiness and in honour of another aspect of life... Death. I have also written many personal poems for people whom in some cases I have only met once and unlikely to meet again. My personal poems are thought provoking and motivational. There is a spiritual depth to them too and almost miraculously they zoom in on and highlight the source of a person’s fears and woes and offer release and solutions. I honestly can’t say how I do this, as not only has the individual not talked about their pain to me, in most cases they have buried it from themselves. My poems acknowledging their problems with heartfelt advice and hope bring enlightenment and tears of wonderment, to me too! Most of my poems are written at night in a trance-like state and I wake up in the morning to reams of paper. Sometimes I have to look up words in the dictionary as I don’t know what they mean or even if they exist, and I am amazed to find they are words which express exactly what I am trying to say! Even Oprah Winfrey visiting a murderer in prison is the inspiration for one of my trance-like channelled poems! I feel the prisoner's subconscious was speaking through me and what develops is truly incredible and alarming. My poems are cherished by me. "I have the armour to fight life's lions" and "I have captured the Gift of Happiness within my heart" Even people who don't like poems love mine passionately. They all rhyme and have a readable, enjoyable flow to them. Nobody hears one without wanting to hear another. Last night I dreamed of a beautiful angel called Seraphina who told me she was my travel companion. I feel she should share some credit for my wondrous gift and now have the title for my book which has eluded me for many years.

The Lost Art of Reading by David L. Ulin Pdf

Reading is a revolutionary act, an act of engagement in a culture that wants us to disengage. In The Lost Art of Reading, David L. Ulin asks a number of timely questions - why is literature important? What does it offer, especially now? Blending commentary with memoir, Ulin addresses the importance of the simple act of reading in an increasingly digital culture. Reading a book, flipping through hard pages, or shuffling them on screen - it doesn't matter. The key is the act of reading, and it's seriousness and depth. Ulin emphasizes the importance of reflection and pause allowed by stopping to read a book, and the accompanying focus required to let the mind run free in a world that is not one's own. Are we willing to risk our collective interest in contemplation, nuanced thinking, and empathy? Far from preaching to the choir, The Lost Art of Reading is a call to arms, or rather, to pages.
