The identification of poor readers as "learning disabled" can be the first of many steps toward consigning students to a lifetime of reading failure. The very label that is meant to help children often becomes a burden that works against effective learning throughout their schooling. In this book, the authors identify the dangers of labeling children as reading or learning disabled, contending that a "reading disability" is not a unitary phenomenon. In order to diagnose and help children, educators and parents need to understand the multiple sources of reading difficulty before they can choose appropriate means to correct it. Drawing on recent research in cognitive psychology, the authors present a new theoretical model of reading disability that integrates a wide variety of findings across age and grade spans. Laid out in terms that are readily comprehensible to parents and practitioners, the model outlines the phases that are characteristic of the path to proficient reading, then describes four ways in which disabled readers may stray from this path. The key to the authors' work lies in the fact that youngsters who stray from the path of typical reading acquisition often are not distinguishable from other children who are classified as "poor readers" rather than as "learning disabled." This model is an especially useful one for practitioners because it both provides a broader view of reading disability than have many previous models and shows how reading disability relates to typical reading acquisition. Using illustrative case studies, the authors describe the four patterns of reading disability, explain how to properly assess them, and suggest ways to conquer them.

How horse racing's pioneering use of communication and information networks helped shape the modern media, information, and leisure environment. The horse racing industry has been a pioneer in interactive media, information networks, and their deployment. The race track and the off-track betting parlor offer interactive media environments that reconfigure the relationships among private and public space and presence and copresence. In this book, Holly Kruse explores how horse racing has used media over the last several decades, arguing that examining the history and context of horse racing and gambling gives us a clearer understanding of the development of data networks, media complexes, public entertainment, and media publics. Kruse describes an enormous industry that depends on global information and communication flows made possible by a network linking racetracks, homes, off-track betting, farms, and auction sites. Racetrack architecture now allows for the presence of screens, most showing races from other locations. Online betting sites enable bettors to wager from home. Off-track betting facilities collect wagers on races from all over the country. Odds are set interactively through the pari-mutuel market system. Kruse considers the uses of public space, and its redefinition by public screens; the effect of interactive media on the racing industry, including networked, in-home betting; the “technopanic” over online poker and the popularity of in-home pari-mutuel wagering; and the use of social media by racing fans to share information and creative work with no financial payoff.

Off the Beaten (Subway) Track by Suzanne Reisman Pdf

While it may seem that every possible attraction in New York City has been written about, Off the Beaten (Subway) Track is the city’s first guide to focus on one hundred unique, off-the-beaten-path destinations. Some are small museums, some are historic places long forgotten, some are stores that sell only odd things, and some are distinguished for their claim to fame as the world’s largest/smallest whatever. All of them are notable for the passion with which their proprietors and curators care for them, and all of them can be visited via the subway system as Suzanne Reisman directs you to which of the city’s 486 subway stations will get you closest. These attractions are the types of places and things that not only fit perfectly with the New Yorker’s psyche and ego but also satisfy a tourist’s desire to see the unusual. For example, the Big Apple is home to the world’s tallest Doric column, the world’s largest armory, the world’s largest cathedral, and the world’s largest Reform synagogue. The city also has a troll museum, a numismatic museum, a skyscraper museum, doll and toy museums, and a museum of comic and cartoon art. In many cases, half the fun of visiting these places is getting to meet the people behind them. Organized geographically to help you to explore the culture and diversity of the city’s great neighborhoods, Off the Beaten (Subway) Track offers venues in Manhattan (Lower, Middle, and Upper), Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island. Also included in many of the entries are nearby places of interest within walking distance that you might also want to visit while you’re in the neighborhood.

Off Track by Fran Zabaleta Pdf

A MAN ON THE RUN. A PARADISE STEEPED IN LEGENDS. A THOUSAND-YEAR-OLD QUEST THAT IS ABOUT TO COME TO AND END. Laro is already in his forties and can't take any more. He has been at rock bottom for years, unable to take control of his own life, when a haughty judge and an unanticipated prison sentence give him the final kick in the teeth. With nothing to lose, he flees Madrid and settles in an abandoned house in the mountains of Courel, one of the most remote and beautiful regions of Galicia, with the intention of vanishing from the world. But vanishing is not easy when the past haunts you and the future forces you to face your most stubborn enemy: yourself. Moreover, paradise is not as idyllic as it seems. Despite the apparent friendliness of the locals, Laro soon discovers that he has found himself in the middle of a centuries-old conflict in which legends and reality have blurred boundaries and everyone wants to use him for their own ends... A novel of suspense and adventure and a gruelling account of overcoming personal difficulties in an exceptional setting. An intense portrayal of events in which history is intertwined with the most deeply rooted popular beliefs of Galicia. A JOURNEY INTO THE LEGENDARY PAST OF A LAND OF DAZZLING BEAUTY. ˜ WHAT READERS SAY "One of the best books I have read lately. What I treasure most in reading a book is to be transported to another world and to become an accomplice of the characters that appear in it, and this book has achieved that magic with distinction. A great discovery for me by its author, whom I thank for this journey."(Pecci. Amazon.es) ˜ “Amazing. I started reading and I couldn’t put it down. It has the power to transport the reader to the magical world of legends. It takes you into the very depth of the Galician forests, and you experience the sensation of entering a region that through its geography transports you to the past as graphically as a time tunnel. I was touched by the humanity of the characters and their complex relationship with the everyday and the mystical. I was sure that I would not be disappointed, and I certainly wasn’t.” (Mar Hevia. Amazon.es) ˜ "Superb plot in which contemporary issues, history, nature and emotions intersect.... A passionate narrative that combines historical events and present times, together with the nature and origins of an area that deserves to be better known... as indeed does its author." (Andres V. Amazon.es) ˜ “Fantastic novel … The plot interweaves fictional protagonists with real locations in the Courel area of Lugo, all masterfully interwoven with ancient Galician legends in a thrilling intrigue that picks up pace as the story progresses ... I'm not usually very attracted to witchcraft and other ancestral beliefs, but here they are so well woven with reality, and so justified, that I ended up loving the novel.” (LaMonaMour. Amazon.es)

Getting Off Track by John B. Taylor Pdf

In this concise volume, leading economist John B. Taylor offers empirical research to explain what caused the current financial crisis, what prolonged it, and what dramatically worsened it more than a year after it began. The evidence he presents strongly suggests that specific government actions and interventions are largely to blame and that any future government interventions must be based on a clearly stated diagnosis of the problem and a rationale for the interventions.
