Oh My God, Guns, and Country by Chad Rea Pdf

Having spent more than two decades creating ad campaigns for over 170 brands, Chad Rea likes to think he knows a good slogan when he sees one. And while this one isn't exclusive to the Lone Star Red State, or officially blessed, Chad says "God, guns, and country" sums up the Texas brand pretty darn well - if not one half of The Divided States. Depending on which piece of cheap, imported merch you come across, the country part of the phrase can be interpreted to mean country music, 'Merica, or the country of TEXAS. Sometimes you'll see "country" replaced with words like guts, glory, oil, or breakfast tacos, but the two parts you just don't mess with are God and guns. Them's fighting words. And, despite spending his formative years in El Paso and San Antonio as a gun-shootin', church-goin' conservative, and then returning twice in his well-traveled adult life to Lubbock, Dallas, and now Austin, Chad's chosen to fight the good fight. With art.As an artivist, "God, guns, and country" are like trigger words for Chad, providing fuel for much of the themes behind his work - be it related to politics, violence, mental health, mortality, climate change, or other matters of the bleeding heart. Perhaps a more accurate title for this 5ish-year collection of curated works would've been "Spirituality, social issues, and place." Although, he's pretty sure that's California's slogan, and Chad would hate for his neighbors to think he was born there. Shhh.

Operation Broken Reed by Arthur L. Boyd Pdf

At the height of the Korean War, President Truman launched one of the most important intelligence -- gathering operations in history. So valuable were the mission's findings about the North Korean-Soviet-Chinese alliance that it is no stretch to say they prevented World War III. Only one man -- sworn to secrecy for a half-century -- survived Operation Broken Reed. Arthur Boyd recalls his role as cryptographer on a team of Army Rangers, Navy Frogmen, Air Force officers, and CIA operatives that posed as the captured crew of a B-29 bomber in January 1952. Given cover names and cyanide capsules in case of discovery, the men were transported by Chinese Nationalists wearing Communist uniforms across North Korea, where undercover allies delivered information about troop strengths, weaponry, and intention. Fraught with danger, the mission came apart on its last day when the Americans came under fire from Chinese forces wise to the operation. The members of Broken Reed supplied Truman with proof of massive Chinese and Soviet buildups and a heavy Soviet bomber group in Manchuria, fully loaded with atomic weapons. With the potential destruction of the world outlined in front of him, Truman chose not to escalate the Korean War, saving millions of lives.

Disarmed by Kristin Goss Pdf

More than any other advanced industrial democracy, the United States is besieged by firearms violence. Each year, some 30,000 people die by gunfire. Over the course of its history, the nation has witnessed the murders of beloved public figures; massacres in workplaces and schools; and epidemics of gun violence that terrorize neighborhoods and claim tens of thousands of lives. Commanding majorities of Americans voice support for stricter controls on firearms. Yet they have never mounted a true national movement for gun control. Why? Disarmed unravels this paradox. Based on historical archives, interviews, and original survey evidence, Kristin Goss suggests that the gun control campaign has been stymied by a combination of factors, including the inability to secure patronage resources, the difficulties in articulating a message that would resonate with supporters, and strategic decisions made in the name of effective policy. The power of the so-called gun lobby has played an important role in hobbling the gun-control campaign, but that is not the entire story. Instead of pursuing a strategy of incremental change on the local and state levels, gun control advocates have sought national policies. Some 40% of state gun control laws predate the 1970s, and the gun lobby has systematically weakened even these longstanding restrictions. A compelling and engagingly written look at one of America's most divisive political issues, Disarmed illuminates the organizational, historical, and policy-related factors that constrain mass mobilization, and brings into sharp relief the agonizing dilemmas faced by advocates of gun control and other issues in the United States.

Beyond Dystopia! by James Lukasavage Pdf

Beyond Dystopia! is a criticism of life in our current time, the postmodern Anthropocene, and what I am seeking is nothing less than humanity's apotheosis, or, as Voltaire's Candide had it, "le meilleur des mondes possibles," which does not have to be a world without humans, only one with a limited number of humans, doing less.

Guns and Values by Dylan S. McLean,Anthony K. Fleming Pdf

The American gun control debate is best understood as a battle in a war over the influence of individualism on American culture, politics, and policy. This book demonstrates that the gun debate is fundamentally about values. Specifically, it is about what we value most: private rights, or the public good. This helps explain why the technical, empirical, or legalistic arguments we hear aren’t persuasive. A review of scholarly literature on both the politics of gun control and American political culture finds an American bias toward an individualism that embraces personal rights. We argue that this bias stacks the deck against gun control. Interviews we conducted with activists show that support for, or opposition to, gun control is linked to concern for the public, or private, good. Finally, we trace the federal gun control debate in Washington from the 1960s to 2010s to show the ebbs and flows of individualism’s influence.

Black Irish White Jamaican by Niamh O'Brien Pdf

After many years of watching peoples disbelief when recounting her personal adventures, tragedies, and survival about life in Jamaica, the author was inspired to write them down and mold them into a book for readers to enjoy. The story begins in 1951 when Tom OBrien, the authors father, leaves his native Ireland with his pregnant wife Maeve and two year old son Peter to start a new life in their adopted home of Jamaica. The book recounts their interesting stories and miraculous survival during Jamaicas violent, dangerous years of the seventies and eighties. The authors personal stories of her Jamaican upbringing in a completely dysfunctional yet loving family are strewn with amusing highs and unnerving lows, but it is her mothers journey of bravery and growth that is mostly highlighted in the book. Maeves painful personal challenges are hard enough to endure, but it is in later years, when she and the family are surrounded by corrupt politics, barbaric crimes and hateful racial turmoil, that her survival story becomes only more incredulous. Amazingly, in spite of these challenges, she only grows stronger and wiser as the years go by. The unbearable politics and crime forces the family to flee Jamaica in the late seventies. The book details the immigration journey that eventually leads to safety in the United States of America. Maeve always remained proud of the brave choices she made in her life, difficult choices, but ones that ultimately empowered her to find independence and peace. She was a true survivor.
