Extraordinary Forms of Aging by Julia Velten Pdf

While aging and the life-course appear to be normalized processes, the complex construction of age at the intersection of biology, society, and culture remains opaque. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of age(ing) by exploring its construction through the analysis of extraordinary cases. Focusing on life narratives of centenarians and children with progeria, Julia Velten analyzes the way in which these people experience age(ing) and shows how these experiences can contribute to our understanding of age. Situated at the intersection of aging studies and medical humanities, the study explores what extraordinary age(ing) can tell us about aging processes in general.

The Age of Elephants by Peter Moss Pdf

¿The filaments that enmeshed them in Durbar Court were the stories they wove. Leila, who never contributed any herself, claimed that without them the resident behemoths would fall permanently asleep. It was a soporific summer. An extraordinary summer, as if the mechanism of the seasons had broken down, stranding them in a time locked vault of cloudless blue. The garden parasols were giant sundials around which carousels of shadow clocked the intervals from breakfast to supper. Only the bearers punctuated the hours, padding out to them with trays of lemon cordial and iced tea.¿ This second novel by Peter Moss, whose first, The Singing Tree, was described by the New York Times as `a little gem¿, draws heavily upon his memories of an Indian childhood to populate a recreated cameo of imperial India, set on the south coast of England. Here relics of the British Raj, living out their sequestered lives immersed in nostalgia for a long lost world, lead a casual visitor to confront memories he has desperately endeavoured to erase. A graceful, elaborate¿tale of innocents yearning for home. Moss has been a firsthand witness to the fading glory of the British diaspora in exotic locales like India, Hong Kong and the Philippines. Here, he draws heavily on a childhood spent in India to recreate the experiences of expatriates repatriated against their will, caught between a glorious spiritual home and the draw of Queen and country. Moss fosters a charming colonial memory that will speak clearly to anyone who's been away from home a long time. A romanticized, tragic remembrance of well-loved experiences. -Kirkus Discoveries

Black Opera by Naomi Andre Pdf

From classic films like Carmen Jones to contemporary works like The Diary of Sally Hemmings and U-Carmen eKhayelitsa, American and South African artists and composers have used opera to reclaim black people's place in history. Naomi André draws on the experiences of performers and audiences to explore this music's resonance with today's listeners. Interacting with creators and performers, as well as with the works themselves, André reveals how black opera unearths suppressed truths. These truths provoke complex, if uncomfortable, reconsideration of racial, gender, sexual, and other oppressive ideologies. Opera, in turn, operates as a cultural and political force that employs an immense, transformative power to represent or even liberate. Viewing opera as a fertile site for critical inquiry, political activism, and social change, Black Opera lays the foundation for innovative new approaches to applied scholarship.

Change Your Clothes by Terri Davis Pdf

I was inspired to write about several events that occurred through my transition of change. Changing hasnt always come easily; in fact, the more I think about it, I was not even considering changing my way of living until God stepped into my life and began ministering to me. My whole world turned in a different and unfamiliar direction. I was afraid and on many occasions paralyzed by the fear of moving from my familiar way of life. I was sometimes disobedient, for when God wanted me to go one way I would go the other. I had to repent! The moment I allowed change was the moment I began my journey to destiny. Change is very common in the world we live in. With technology, markets up and down, our children growing up (they are not infants anymore, and neither are we!), it is evident that we experience change but the question is will we accept it in our hearts. I can say that with God it will be a more pleasant transition. Change is going to come whether we are ready for it or not; so I encourage you to embrace change as it comes. It may not be easy but it is always good. It may be joyous for some, and so unexpected for others that many may change kicking and screaming. Whether you are the kicker or screamer, remember to repent. The key is to change. God told Jacob to gather his people and go up to Bethel to worship and to put away their idols (see Genesis 35:25). God is calling us to do the same. He wants us to experience everything that he created us for, which will only come with our changing. As you walk with me through these pages, I hope that you will not just laugh but think about how important it is for your future that you do change. Most of all, I pray that you will connect with this writing and use it as a tool to move forward. These testimonies are from my heart to yours in hope that you will see there are so many in this world going through similar changes and to assure you that you are not alone. Never did I think the day would come when I would be sharing a part of my life with an audience or be fortunate enough to share my testimonies with you. Well, this day has come, and it came because I became hungry for change. I hope that as you read, you will discover your potential to change and do so now. May our God richly bless you! Terri Davis
