A History of the University of Cambridge (Classic Reprint) by J. Bass Mullinger Pdf

Excerpt from A History of the University of Cambridge Although the present volume appears as one of a series especially designed to illustrate Church History, the writer has not sought to modify the treatment of the subject in order to establish its claim to a place in such a category. The following sketch will suffice to show that it was in the University of Cambridge that the Reformation in England had its real commencement; that it was there that Puritanism first assumed a distinct organisation, and at the same time encountered the mo6t effective resistance; that it was there also that a movement which most materially influenced the religions thought of the seventeenth century, - the teaching of the Cambridge Platonists, - took its rise and made its most important contributions to the cause of freedom and toleration. Cambridge and Its Story (Classic Reprint) by Arthur Gray Pdf

Excerpt from Cambridge and Its Story The title of History. Its purpose is to Show the conditions of medieval England Which shaped the University in its beginnings, and the intellectual needs which, in successive centuries, it was the aim of its benefactors and the founders of its colleges to satisfy. In the chapters which deal with post-reforma tion times I have made no continuous survey of the life and studies of the University, but have aimed at showing its character at certain epochs in its history, and its influences on some of its most eminent sons who have carried those influences into national Spheres of science or letters. Incidentally I have endeavoured to present a picture of men and manners at Cambridge at the time when it was known to each of these great men, and of scenes in college courts and. Proceedings of the Centennial Anniversary of the Old Town of Cambridge (Classic Reprint) by N. Y. Cambridge Pdf

Excerpt from Proceedings of the Centennial Anniversary of the Old Town of Cambridge The celebration of the centennial anniversary of the founding of the old town of Cambridge was first suggested by Hon. Anson Ingraham, of the present town of Cambridge, in a brief letter dated February 28, 1873, addressed to the editor of the Washington County Post, calling attention to the fact that we had entered on the one hundredth year of the history of the old town, and suggesting that the event be commemorated. This letter was published, with editorial comment, seconding its suggestions, and recommending that at the ensuing town meetings, then at hand, in the three towns comprised in the boundaries of the old town, five gentlemen be appointed from each town, there to form a central committee to arrange for the proper observance of the occasion. This recommendation was acted on and the following gentlemen appointed: Cambridge - Thomas S. Green, William Dimick, Cortland Skinner, Berry Long, John Ashton. White Creek - R. King Crocker, John Larmon, W. I. Perry, George Barker, James Ellis. Jackson - George McGeoch, Thomas B. Lourie, William Thompson, William McMillan, William Watkins, J. E. Robertson. Old Friends at Cambridge and Elsewhere (Classic Reprint) by John Willis Clark Pdf

Excerpt from Old Friends at Cambridge and Elsewhere Out of these, with some additions, the present article has been composed. It has been suggested to me that an article on Richard Owen, in a series devoted entirely, with that exception, to Cambridge men, needs justification. I would urge in my defence that the Senate coopted Owen by selecting him, in is59, as the first recipient of an honorary degree under the new statutes. A Book of Cambridge Verse (Classic Reprint) by Ernest Edward Kellett Pdf

Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. The Cambridge History of English Literature, Vol. 9 (Classic Reprint) by Adolphus William Ward Pdf

Excerpt from The Cambridge History of English Literature, Vol. 9 HE present volume, we hope, will shortly be followed by the tenth, dealing with the age of Johnson. As the canvas grows more crowded, we must ask our readers to take note that the grouping of writers, on the principles which we have endeavoured to follow in this work, makes it impossible, even were it desirable, to maintain a strict chronological order as to the inclusion of particular names in particular volumes. Thus, in the present volume, notices of several divines, and, again, of several dramatists, together with the mention of other names, have had to be reserved for its successor.
