OLD AND NEW NOTTINGHAM 1881 by Richard Pearson Pdf

Nottingham continued to grow rapidly, especially after 1845 when a great deal of land around it was released for building. Nottingham gained gas street lighting in 1819. However like all towns in the early 19th century Nottingham was a dirty, unsanitary place. There was a cholera epidemic in 1833, which killed 330 people. However life in 19th century Nottingham gradually improved. In the mid-19th century the piped water supply was taken over by the corporation and was greatly expanded. After 1835 Nottingham had its first proper police force and a new prison was built in 1846. Meanwhile the railway first reached Nottingham in 1839. The first public library in Nottingham opened in 1868 and University College was formed in 1881, when ""Nottingham Old And New"" was published.

Nottinghamshire by Nikolaus Pevsner,Elizabeth Williamson Pdf

Full of memorable and surprising buildings, Nottingham is a county that rewards close investigation. Great medieval churches are represented by Worksop, Newark and by Southwell, with its exquisite carved 'leaves'. Of its country houses, Wollaton Hall shows Elizabethan architecture at its most fantastic, Bunny Hall the English Baroque at its most bizarre, while Lord Byron's Newstead Abbey incorporates one of the strangest of all monastic ruins. The city of Nottingham, marvellously set between hills, is crowded with sturdy Victorian and Edwardian commercial buildings, and enlivened by a strong local tradition of first-rate Modernist architecture.

Olde Nottinghamshire Punishments by Ian Morgan Pdf

Generation after generation has come up with new forms of punishment to inflict on those guilty (and sometimes innocent) of crimes against property and person. From the stocks and pillory, to flogging, ducking and transportation to foreign lands, this volume brings to life those turbulent times of long ago. Even after suffering the ultimate in punishments — death — the bodies of the convicted could still be punished. Stories of dissection, when the body of the deceased criminal was publicly carved up, or gibbeting, when the corpse would be coated in tar and canvass and displayed in an iron frame on a pole 30ft high, are gruesome in the extreme. Pity poor John Spencer, whose rotting remains were gibbeted for over sixty years until the cage was finally blown down in a storm. Richly illustrated, this book provides a fascinating glimpse into the dark world of punishments through the centuries and will appeal to all those wishing to discover more about Nottinghamshire’s intriguing past.

Nottingham by Scott Lomax Pdf

NOTTINGHAM: THE BURIED PAST OF A HISTORIC CITY REVEALED covers the story of the part of the city which was known as Nottingham during Medieval times. It is an accessible read and the ideal book for anyone with a general interest in the history of the city of Nottingham. However, it will also suit professional archaeologists and students alike due to the large amount of previously unpublished material. Key points to be discussed include Nottingham Castle, the churches and friaries of the Medieval period, the Medieval town wall, Nottingham's manmade caves, the industries which took place in Saxon and Medieval times, as well as little known facts such as Nottingham's connections to the Vikings. This book also offers some possible answers to the never before published mysteries which archaeological work has uncovered such as the large burial site in the city centre and a mysterious village or suburb which briefly existed just outside of the city centre in the 14th century. As featured in the Nottingham Post and on BBC Radio Nottingham.
