Reading these tales from Northern Malawi readers come close to watching an original performance and the tales and the songs encapsulate the essence of Malawian culture. The authors presentation, using performance directions, allows the reader to see and hear old Nyaviyuyi as she, through word, voice, tone and gesture, mocks nosy wives, and celebrates the devotion of friendship and parental love. The author has made a further contribution to the topic by including musical notations for the songs.

Tumbuka Folktales by Brian Shawa,Jaston Soko Pdf

Tumbuka folktales are on the verge of extinction. If not recorded now, the loss would not only be the amusement they provide but chiefly lessons inherent. On the surface, they are simple narratives, however, subtly they evoke serious moral lessons that are very applicable to our everyday life today. This folklore collection is based on field research conducted by the authors in Citumbuka speaking areas of Mzimba and Rumphi districts in Nothern Malawi.

Oral Literature and Moral Education among the Lakeside Tonga of Northern Malawi by David Mphande Pdf

This is a book about the Tonga of Northern Malawi, sometimes called the Lakeshore Tonga to distinguish them from other ethnic groups with the same name further west in Central Africa. The Lakeshore Tonga were the first ethnic group to identify themselves with the Christian faith. The purpose of the research was to investigate the use of Tonga myths, folktales, proverbs and rituals for their role in Moral Education and assess and evaluate their contribution towards value formation for the youth. Each chapter in the book aims to discuss some ideas in the anthropology of religion and to illustrate them with specific case studies formed primarily through conversation with friends, both young and old, over some years.

Identity by Dissociation by Hany Longwe Pdf

Though Achewa Providence Industrial Mission (APIM) is a church that is confined to the Chewa people, one of John Chilembwe's students, Peter Kalemba, a Chewa, was instrumental in the founding of PIM, and later, the organization of APIM in Mangoni. Both churches trace their heritage back to Chilembwe, a Baptist. APIM was instrumental in the beginning of churches in Lilongwe that form the backbone of BACOMA. Since APIM has not spread out to include people of other ethnic groups, Christianization by means of the people group movement is by no means the perfect answer to the evangelization of a tribe.

Otuzo twOvaherero by Hangara, Hangara Pdf

Otuzo twOvaherero provides valuable information on Ovaherero patriclans and records folklore and praise poems in Otjiherero. Previously, these did not exist in written form. The book attempts to preserve these oral traditions before they disappear. It aims to restore pride to the Ovaherero, particularly in patrilineages that were displaced by the Ovaherero-German war of 1904-1907. Otuzo twOvaherero is structured around the Ovaherero patrilineal descent system (otuzo) which is the basis of the Ovaherero religion Oupwee. The surnames and homesteads that belong to the same patrilineage are grouped together under each patriclan to help the reader to easily trace the homesteads that belong to one patriclan (and thus have a common ancestry). The distinct features of each patriclan are specified in terms of totems, taboos, patriclans which collaborate, and praise poems of homesteads. All the patriclans and praise poems in this book were collected from Ovaherero communities living in Namibia. The author uses the term ‘Ovaherero’ to include the various groups which speak the common language Otjiherero and which include the Ovahimba, Ovaherero, Ovatjimba and Ovambanderu. This book has the potential to promote unity within the Ovaherero community by showing how families are connected in lineages which trace back centuries.

The Hyena Wears Darkness by Chimombo, Steve Pdf

Some people often ignore the fact that writers respond to the HIV/AIDS pandemic by using it as a theme in their poetry, fiction, and plays. Steve Chimombo started recording the writers’ responses as early as 1990 and wrote ‘AIDS and the Writer’ in WASI: the magazine for the arts. The article reported the results of a poetry competition organized by the Ministry of Health on the theme, and there have been other competitions also by different institutions since then. Some radio and television programs have also called upon the writer to help in the dissemination of information to their listeners. The Hyena Wears Darkness is the author’s own contribution to the national Malawian campaign to educate the public on the pandemic. Its focus is on those cultural practices which help propagate HIV/AIDS in Malawian society.

Christians by Grace-- Baptists by Choice by Hany Longwe Pdf

"The Baptist convention of Malawi (BACOMA) grew out of the Baptist Mission in Malawi's work that began almost 50 years ago as a result of plans by the Central African (Southern Baptist Convention) Mission to expand their works from Zimbabwe to Malawi. Although BACOMA owes much of their tradition to the white Southern Baptists of the US, they are typically a Malawian expression of the Church. In five chapters the author, a long standing Principle of the Baptist Theological Seminary of Malawi, offers a history of the Baptist convention of Malawi. The five themes being: BACOMA's Polygenetic Nature; Evangelistic Zeal and the Development of BACOMA 1970-1989; Women and Youth in Evangelism and the Development of BACOMA; Separation and Cooperation: A "Loose" Partnership and The People."--

Contemporary Oral Literature Fieldwork by Peter Wasamba Pdf

Contemporary Oral Literature Fieldwork is based on rich research experience dating back to the 1990s. The book is written against the backdrop of Africas confusion with regard to the place of oral literature in the face of the rest of the world, where oral literature exists in conjunction with new literary forms. Wasamba argues that the oral and the written literatures are complementary literary forms. Throughout the work, the author underscores the universal dimension of oral literature as he demonstrates its particular attributes.
