Old Peter's Russian Tales (Classic Reprint) by Arthur Ransome Pdf

Excerpt from Old Peter's Russian Tales The stories in this book are those that Russian peasants tell their children and each other. In Russia hardly anybody is too old for fairy stories, and I have even heard soldiers on their way to the war talking of very wise and very beautiful princesses as they drank their tea by the side of the road. I think there must be more fairy stories told in Russia than anywhere else in the world. In this book are a few of those I like best. I have taken my own way with them more or less, writing them mostly from memory. They, or versions like them, are to be found in the coloured chap-books, in Afanasiev's great collection, or in solemn, serious volumes of folklorists writing for the learned. My book is not for the learned, or indeed for grown-up people at all. No peoplewho really like fairy stories ever grow up altogether. This is a book written far away in Russia, for English children who play in deep lanes with wild roses above them in the high hedges, or by the small singing becks that dance down the grey fells at home. Russian fairyland is quite different. Under my windows the wavelets of the Volkhov (which has its part in one of the stories) are beating quietly in the dusk. A gold light burns on a timber raft floating down the river. Beyond the river in the blue midsummer twilight are the broad Russian plain and the distant forest. Some where in that forest of great trees - a forest so big that the forests of England are little woods beside it - is the hut where old Peter sits at night and tells. OLD PETER'S RUSSIAN TALES by Arthur Ransome Pdf

This is a book of Russian folklore retold for young people and the young at heart. The tales are a good sampling of Slavic marchen. The stories in this book are those that Russian peasants tell their children and each other. This is a book written far away in Russia, for English children who play in deep lanes with wild roses above them in the high hedges, or by the small singing becks that dance down the gray fells at home. Russian fairyland is quite different. Under the windows of the author's house, the wavelets of the Volkhov River are beating quietly in the dusk. A gold light burns on a timber raft floating down the river. Beyond the river in the blue midsummer twilight is the broad Russian steppe and the distant forests of Novgorod. Somewhere in that forest of great trees--a forest so big that the forests of England are little woods beside it--is the hut where old Peter sits at night and tells these stories to his grandchildren. In Russia hardly anybody is too old for fairy stories, and the author even overheard soldiers on their way to the WWI talking of very wise and very beautiful princesses as they drank their tea by the side of the road. He believed there must be more fairy stories told in Russia than anywhere else in the world. In this book are a few of those he liked best. The author spent time in Russia during World War I as a journalist for the radical British newspaper, the Daily News, meeting among others, Lenin and Trotsky and was also known in the London bohemian artistic scene. 33% of the net from the sale of this book will be donated to charities for educational purposes. Folk Tales From the Russian (Classic Reprint) by Verra X. Kalamatiano De Blumenthal Pdf

Excerpt from Folk Tales From the Russian N Russia, as elsewhere in the world, folklore is rapidly scattering before the practical Spirit of modern progress. The traveling peasant bard or story teller, and the devoted nyanya, the beloved nurse of many a generation, are rapidly dying out, and with them the tales and legends, the last echoes of the nation's early joys and sufferings, hopes and fears, are passing away. The student of folk-lore knows that the time has come when haste is needed to catch these van ishing songs of the nation's youth and to pre serve them for the delight of future generations. In sending forth the stories in the present vol ume, all of which are here set down in print for the first time, it is my hope that they may enable American children to share with the children of Russia the pleasure of glancing into the magic world of the old Slavic nation. Russian Fairy Tales by A. Brylinska Pdf

Excerpt from Russian Fairy Tales: An Accented Russian Reader With Notes and Vocabulary Before the appearance of written literature the Fairy Tale was the only product of the popular creative power, the only outlet for the imagination of the people. It served to brighten the hopeless outlook of the helpless peasant and saved his mind from utter degeneracy. Tales and Legends from the Land of the Tzar: Collection of Russian Stories (Classic Reprint) by Edith M. S. Hodgetts Pdf

Excerpt from Tales and Legends From the Land of the Tzar: Collection of Russian Stories IN presenting to the English Public this little volume of Russian stories, I give the result of some years' experience in Russia, where I was born, and where I spent my childhood. Some of these tales were dictated in the original Russian at school, others were related to me by my nurse and other servants of my father's household, while some are translations which I have made from various collections of Russian stories current among the people. Russian humour is peculiar, and it is not always easy to know whether Ivan is laughing at or will: you. In this respect he resembles Pat, whose affected simplicity is in nine cases out of ten a mere cloak for unfathom able shrewdness. The Russian Garland, Being Russian Folk Tales (Classic Reprint) by Robert Reynolds Steele Pdf

Excerpt from The Russian Garland, Being Russian Folk Tales It is hardly necessary to dilate on the peculiar expressions here to be found; how that a child grows not day by day, but hour by hour, how that when the Tsar wants to drink beer is not brewed nor brandy distilled, seeing he is served at once, how the hero passes through thrice nine lands to the thirtieth country, how brothers are always in threes, and how the youngest always succeeds where his elders fail. Students of folk lore will know all about them, and the rest of us must take them on trust. Do you know why you must never go under a ladder? Russian Wonder Tales by Post Wheeler Pdf

Excerpt from Russian Wonder Tales: With a Foreword on the Russian Skazki These older meanings, for the teller, vanished many centuries ago. The only things the skazki picture that are common to Russian country life today are those things which in Russia never change - the Wide, wind swept steppe and dense forest, the love of animal life and the comradeship of the horse, the dread and terror of the long winter cold, and the passionate welcome given to the springtime sun. Whatever else they may tell the student is in a tongue now unintelligible to the peasant, who has least of all been aware that, in these centuries old repetitions there have been handed down to a new era pictures indelible, though blurred and indistinct, of an ancient age, of times, customs, religion and deities no longer his own.
