The Ganga by Pranab Kumar Parua Pdf

From time immemorial the Bengal Delta had been an important maritime des- nation for traders from all parts of the world. The actual location of the port of call varied from time to time in line with the natural hydrographic changes. From the early decades of the second millennium AD, traders from the European con- nent also joined the traders from the Arab countries, who had been the Forerunners in maritime trading with India. Daring traders and fortune seekers from Denmark, Holland, Belgium and England arrived at different ports of call along the Hooghly river. The river had been, in the meantime, losing its pre-eminence as the main outlet channel of the sacred Ganga into the Bay of Bengal, owing to a shift of ?ow towards east near Rajmahal into the Padma, which had been so long, carried very small part of the large volume of ?ow. On a cloudy afternoon on August 24, 1690 the British seafarer Job Charnock rested his oars at Kolkata and started a new chapter in the life of a sleepy village, bordering the Sunderbans which was ‘a tangled region of estuaries, rivers and water courses, enclosing a vast number of islands of various shapes and sizes. ’ and infested with a large variety of wild animals. In the language of the British Nobel Laureate (1907) Rudyard Kipling (1865–1936). ???? ???? Thus the midday halt of Charnock grew a city.

Nuclear Bomb In Ganga by RK Yadav Pdf

The name of this book, ‘Nuclear Bomb in Ganga’ sounds fearsome. But, it is a hard fact which has to be brought in black and white for the safety of millions of Indians who consider the river ‘Sacred Ganga’ or ‘the Ganges’ as their mother. After China detonated its first nuclear test on May, 1964 at Lop Nor, the USA was keen to keep track of further nuclear designs of Communist China in this region. The CIA teamed up with the Indian Intelligence Bureau (IB) to install a Nuclear Device on Nanda Devi Mountain to monitor further detonations by China in Lop Nor, across the Himalayas. Inclement weather during the installation mission forced the team involved in the expedition to hide the nuclear-powered device in a ledge around 2000 feet below the installation point of the Nanda Devi Mountain. When the recovery team of Indian climbers was sent in October 1966 to retrieve the equipment, they found it missing in the glaciers due to avalanches. The CIA and Indian Intelligence maintained an eerie silence about the missing device until it was exposed by an American magazine on 12 April 1978. The then Prime Minister of India, Morarji Desai, briefed the Parliament on 17 April 1978, about the missing device and appointed a committee of scientists to investigate this issue.

Ganges by Sudipta Sen Pdf

A sweeping, interdisciplinary history of the world's third-largest river, a potent symbol across South Asia and the Hindu diaspora Originating in the Himalayas and flowing into the Bay of Bengal, the Ganges is India's most important and sacred river. In this unprecedented work, historian Sudipta Sen tells the story of the Ganges, from the communities that arose on its banks to the merchants that navigated its waters, and the way it came to occupy center stage in the history and culture of the subcontinent. Sen begins his chronicle in prehistoric India, tracing the river's first settlers, its myths of origin in the Hindu tradition, and its significance during the ascendancy of popular Buddhism. In the following centuries, Indian empires, Central Asian regimes, European merchants, the British Empire, and the Indian nation-state all shaped the identity and ecology of the river. Weaving together geography, environmental politics, and religious history, Sen offers in this lavishly illustrated volume a remarkable portrait of one of the world's largest and most densely populated river basins.

The Ganga, a Scientific Study by C. R. Krishna Murti Pdf

The book Ganga: A Scientific Study is based on an Integrated Research Programme carried out by 14 Universities located in the Ganga Basin sponsored and funded by the Envioronment Research Committee and The Ganga Project Directorate, Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India, New Delhi. The Ganga, one of World's major rivers, has been venerated as the holiest and is bound with countless beliefs and faiths especially in India and adjacent countries. Its water has traditionally been regarded as an inexhaustible gift of nature. Recent experiences do not, however, warrant such a complacency. The water resources are strained to a non-sustainable level due to rapid population explosion, urbanisation, development of agriculture, industry, livestock and power production in the Ganga basin. The hydrobiological quality of water has deteriorated and yet no concise, valid supporting evidence was available in a comprehensive manner covering the entire river. This book is an attempt towards this direction. For the first time a picture of the Ganga is available with its physico-chemical and biological charateristics, the severe pollution stress and causes to which its water is subjected to, the contents and quality of water and possible remedial measures. An account of algae including pollution sensitive and tolerant species, besides bio-indicators is available. A possible modelling exercise has also been included. A microbiological assay and the bacteria present in the river water is also given. This book, in short, is a synthesis of what the Ganga is at present in respect of its hydrobiology, pollution load, and some aspects of hydrology.
