On the Firmness of the Wise Person by Seneca Pdf

Seneca's essay "On the Firmness of the Wise Person" (Latin: De Constantia Sapientis) presents stoicism in very clear and practical terms. It is one of the few essays exclusively dedicated to functional stoicism that Seneca wrote. Essays on stoicism often present the school of thought in hypothetical terms, however, this essay focuses on constructive and practicable advice. Seneca the Younger (c. 4 BC - AD 65), fully Lucius Annaeus Seneca and also known simply as Seneca (/ˈsɛnɪkə/), was a Roman Stoic philosopher, statesman, dramatist, and--in one work--humorist of the Silver Age of Latin literature. As a tragedian, he is best-known for his Medea and Thyestes. He was a tutor and later advisor to emperor Nero. He was forced to take his own life for alleged complicity in the Pisonian conspiracy to assassinate Nero. However, some sources state that he may have been innocent. His father was Seneca the Elder, his elder brother was Lucius Junius Gallio Annaeanus, and his nephew was the poet Lucan.

Of Consolation to Polybius by Seneca Pdf

'Of Consolation to Polybius' is written by Seneca, and is often considered one of Seneca's Consolations. Scholars often refer to this work as the definitive representation of the part of Seneca's life he spent in exile. This Consolatio addresses Polybius, Emperor Claudius' Literary Secretary, to console him on the death of his brother. The essay contains Seneca's Stoic philosophy, with particular attention to the inescapable reality of death. Seneca also encourages Polybius to distract himself from grief with his busy work schedule.

Shakespeare in Jest by Indira Ghose Pdf

Shakespeare in Jest draws fascinating parallels between Shakespeare's humour and contemporary humour. Indira Ghose argues that while many of Shakespeare's jokes no longer work for us, his humour was crucial in shaping comedy in today's entertainment industry. The book looks at a wide variety of plays and reads them in conjunction with examples from contemporary culture, from stand-up comedy to late night shows. Ghose shows the importance of jokes, the functions of which are remarkably similar in Shakespeare’s time and ours. Shakespeare's wittiest characters are mostly women, who use wit to puncture male pretensions and to acquire cultural capital. Clowns and wise fools use humour to mock their betters, while black humour trains the spotlight on the audience, exposing our collusion in the world it skewers. In a discussion of the ethics of humour, the book uncovers striking affinities between Puritan attacks on the theatre and contemporary attacks on comedy. An enjoyable and accessible read, this lively book will enlighten and entertain students, researchers, and general readers interested in Shakespeare, humour, and popular culture.
