On the Use of Chebyshev Polynomials in Numerical Analysis by Arnold Noah Lowan Pdf

This report discusses the use of Chebyshev polynomials in the problem of interpolation and curve fitting and in the very important problem of obtaining "economized expansions" of differential equations, either in the form of polynomials in x or in the form of polynomials in 1/x.

Chebyshev polynomials crop up in virtually every area of numerical analysis, and they hold particular importance in recent advances in subjects such as orthogonal polynomials, polynomial approximation, numerical integration, and spectral methods. Yet no book dedicated to Chebyshev polynomials has been published since 1990, and even that work focuse

The Application of the Chebyshev-Spectral Method in Transport Phenomena by Weidong Guo,Gérard Labrosse,Ranga Narayanan Pdf

Transport phenomena problems that occur in engineering and physics are often multi-dimensional and multi-phase in character. When taking recourse to numerical methods the spectral method is particularly useful and efficient. The book is meant principally to train students and non-specialists to use the spectral method for solving problems that model fluid flow in closed geometries with heat or mass transfer. To this aim the reader should bring a working knowledge of fluid mechanics and heat transfer and should be readily conversant with simple concepts of linear algebra including spectral decomposition of matrices as well as solvability conditions for inhomogeneous problems. The book is neither meant to supply a ready-to-use program that is all-purpose nor to go through all manners of mathematical proofs. The focus in this tutorial is on the use of the spectral methods for space discretization, because this is where most of the difficulty lies. While time dependent problems are also of great interest, time marching procedures are dealt with by briefly introducing and providing a simple, direct, and efficient method. Many examples are provided in the text as well as numerous exercises for each chapter. Several of the examples are attended by subtle points which the reader will face while working them out. Some of these points are deliberated upon in endnotes to the various chapters, others are touched upon in the book itself.

A Simple Introduction to Numerical Analysis by R.D Harding,D.A Quinney Pdf

Approximation techniques are widely used in mathematics and applied physics, as exact solutions are frequently impossible to obtain. A Simple Introduction to Numerical Analysis, Volume 2: Interpolation and Approximation extends the first volume to consider problems in interpolation and approximation. Topics covered include the construction of interpolating functions, the determination of polynomial and rational function approximations, numerical quadrature, and the solution of boundary value problems in ordinary differential equations. As with the previous volume, the text is integrated with a software package that allows the reader to work through numerous examples. It is also possible to use the software to consider problems that are beyond the scope of the text. The authors' expertise in combining text and software has resulted in a very readable work.

A Concise Introduction to Numerical Analysis by A. C. Faul Pdf

This textbook provides an accessible and concise introduction to numerical analysis for upper undergraduate and beginning graduate students from various backgrounds. It was developed from the lecture notes of four successful courses on numerical analysis taught within the MPhil of Scientific Computing at the University of Cambridge. The book is easily accessible, even to those with limited knowledge of mathematics. Students will get a concise, but thorough introduction to numerical analysis. In addition the algorithmic principles are emphasized to encourage a deeper understanding of why an algorithm is suitable, and sometimes unsuitable, for a particular problem. A Concise Introduction to Numerical Analysis strikes a balance between being mathematically comprehensive, but not overwhelming with mathematical detail. In some places where further detail was felt to be out of scope of the book, the reader is referred to further reading. The book uses MATLAB® implementations to demonstrate the workings of the method and thus MATLAB's own implementations are avoided, unless they are used as building blocks of an algorithm. In some cases the listings are printed in the book, but all are available online on the book’s page at www.crcpress.com. Most implementations are in the form of functions returning the outcome of the algorithm. Also, examples for the use of the functions are given. Exercises are included in line with the text where appropriate, and each chapter ends with a selection of revision exercises. Solutions to odd-numbered exercises are also provided on the book’s page at www.crcpress.com. This textbook is also an ideal resource for graduate students coming from other subjects who will use numerical techniques extensively in their graduate studies.

Chebyshev Polynomials by Theodore J. Rivlin Pdf

This survey of the most important properties of Chebyshev polynomials encompasses several areas of mathematical analysis: • Interpolation theory • Orthogonal polynomials • Approximation theory • Numerical integration • Numerical analysis • Ergodic theory Starting with some definitions and descriptions of elementary properties, the treatment advances to examinations of extremal properties, the expansion of functions in a series of Chebyshev polynomials, and iterative properties. The final chapter explores selected algebraic and number theoretic properties of the Chebyshev polynomials. For advanced undergraduates and graduate students in mathematics Originally published in 1974, the text was updated in 1990; this reprint of the second edition corrects various errors and features new material.

Numerical Analysis by I. M. Khabaza Pdf

Numerical Analysis is an elementary introduction to numerical analysis, its applications, limitations, and pitfalls. Methods suitable for digital computers are emphasized, but some desk computations are also described. Topics covered range from the use of digital computers in numerical work to errors in computations using desk machines, finite difference methods, and numerical solution of ordinary differential equations. This book is comprised of eight chapters and begins with an overview of the importance of digital computers in numerical analysis, followed by a discussion on errors in computations using desk machines. Subsequent chapters deal with recurrence relations and algebraic equations; basic properties of matrices; relaxation and finite difference methods; and numerical methods for unequal intervals. The derivation of Lagrange's interpolation polynomial is explained, together with curve fitting and the method of least squares, orthogonal polynomials, and integration methods. This monograph will be of interest to practicing engineers, mathematicians, and scientists as well as students.

Numerical Analysis by Walter Gautschi Pdf

Revised and updated, this second edition of Walter Gautschi's successful Numerical Analysis explores computational methods for problems arising in the areas of classical analysis, approximation theory, and ordinary differential equations, among others. Topics included in the book are presented with a view toward stressing basic principles and maintaining simplicity and teachability as far as possible, while subjects requiring a higher level of technicality are referenced in detailed bibliographic notes at the end of each chapter. Readers are thus given the guidance and opportunity to pursue advanced modern topics in more depth. Along with updated references, new biographical notes, and enhanced notational clarity, this second edition includes the expansion of an already large collection of exercises and assignments, both the kind that deal with theoretical and practical aspects of the subject and those requiring machine computation and the use of mathematical software. Perhaps most notably, the edition also comes with a complete solutions manual, carefully developed and polished by the author, which will serve as an exceptionally valuable resource for instructors.
