With such chapters as "Self Motivation," "Practice! Practice! Practice!" and "Why Worry?" this book promises to be an enjoyable and thought provoking read. So if you've got something about yourself that you'd like to change, read U! Get That Monkey Off Your Own Back! and discover the hidden power in "U." Something to think about: From the day you are born, you face numerous choices. You hear advice and viewpoints from various voices. Some say do it. Some say don't. Some say you will. Some say you won't. But in this maze of life, with its many doors. The choice has always been, and will always be . . . YOURS!

Lost Endeavour by Charles Watkins Pdf

Charles Watkins sailed for the Dardanelles in 1915 with the 1/6th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers. War, he said, was a welcome escape from hard labour in a Lancashire cotton mill. Fifty years later, he wrote his memoir, a ‘hotch-potch of Gallipoli memories.’ “In perpetrating this literary outrage, some apology is due. I could give many plausible excuses for recording moments of this disastrous campaign, but the real truth is the selfish pleasure I find in recalling one crowded hour of glorious life. It was my very good fortune to serve with a Lancashire Territorial Division. To the memory of those contumacious, argumentative, sentimental and lovable Lancashire lads — ‘Salud.’ No better comrades ever trod the field of battle …” “Students of military strategy and tactics had best throw this book away for they’ll learn nothing from it. In fact, I know even less of strategy and tactics than did the High-Ups who conducted the campaign. What’s more, a lowly private soldier sees very little of the larger picture of war — his own grubby little nose is always buried too deeply in his own particular patch of the dung-heap …” The Gallipoli Campaign is not short of operational histories, but few accounts get into the mind of the private soldier so successfully. “The trouble,” says Watkins, “is that most old soldiers develop a reluctance to talk — except perhaps after a few drinks, and when we seem, then, to get a little boastful and silly. At best, and when we are stone-sober, we feel we are merely a little boring to a new and unsympathetic generation. “So we clam-up. We leave it to the cold, clinical dissection of historians to record the battles, the victories … and the defeats. The live and vivid experiences of the soldiers themselves are seldom, if ever, recorded — which is a pity, for without these how can the atmosphere of the times themselves ever be made to come to life.” Lost Endeavour was published for ‘limited and private circulation’ in 1970, then again in 1982. For this modern edition, the editors have added a short biography of Watkins as an appendix, alongside several articles he wrote for the Gallipoli Association’s journal, ‘The Gallipolian’. For background and context, the editors include their notes on individuals, places and events mentioned by Watkins in the text. The reader will also find detail on the 6th Lancs Fusiliers at Helles — the battalion’s establishment, drafts and battle casualties, a timeline for May to December 1915, eight maps, and a Gallipoli roll of honour.

Endeavour Voyage by National Museum of Australia Pdf

The Story of Cook and 1770 marks the first moment of British contact with the east coast of the continent we now know as Australia. It is one of our nation's origin stories, although remembered very differently by Anglo-Australians and by Indigenous Australians. Endeavour Voyage: The Untold Stories of Cook and the First Australians brings something new to this chapter of our history. It expands our national narrative to encompass the perspectives of Indigenous Australians long absent from the telling of these stories. In making the exhibition and creating this companion book, the National Museum of Australia worked closely with Indigenous people from communities along the east coast of Australia -- people whose ancestors witnessed the events of 1770. This richly illustrated publication provides the back story to the exhibition and offers insights from Megan Davis, Maria Nugent, Angus Trumble, Sarah Engledow and others on both Captain James Cook and the Endeavour voyage, including how our understandings of the events of 1770 have been shaped, in part, by a 250th anniversary year defined by COVID-19.

H. M. Bark Endeavour by Ray Parkin Pdf

Ray Parkin, sailor, artist and author, set out in the 1970s to discover everything he could about Captain James Cook's Endeavour, one of the most famous ships in maritime history. The result is the most painstaking study of the ship ever undertaken and a unique account of a great journey- Endeavour's voyage up the east coast of Australia in 1770. Writing for general reader and mariner alike, Parkin sets out to re-create the experience of being on board the Endeavour. Through meticulous research he reveals how it looked, how it sailed, how it smelled and what daily life would have been like for those on board. No aspect of ship life was too insignificant for his enquiries. How many strands of yarn were there in the ship's cable? (954.) Did the ship have a lightning conductor? (Yes.) What was the diameter of her main mast? (21 inches.) Parkin's text is illustrated by plans and figures depicting the ship's architecture and construction, its deck plan, rigging, sails, armament, boats, cables, anchors and accommodation. To enable detailed examination these are reproduced in original size in the box accompanying this volume. The text also contains a composite log of Endeavour's voyage. Extracts from journals kept by those on board are supplemented by an interpretive commentary and explanatory charts. H.M. Bark Endeavour is an absorbing book- discursive, erudite, at times poetic, full of wisdom, insight and information.

The Endeavour Journals by John Macdonald,Clare MacDonald Pdf

In 1770 H.M. Bark Endeavour arrived in New Holland, Australia, the 'Continent of Smoke'. On board were Lieutenant James Cook, gentleman naturalist Joseph Banks, natural history artist Sydney Parkinson, and Midshipman James Magra. For the first time, this book combines the journals of these men to present a single, cohesive narrative that brings the story to life as never before. The journals are complimented by over 300 images, including charts, costal profiles, plans of harbors, and many original drawings executed during the voyage of the animals, people and landscape unique to the region. Of the many titles that are available concerning Cook and his voyaging, few focus on Cook’s New Holland experience. Most commonly these titles are interpretative accounts, and heavily weighted with the author’s opinion. However, here the story of New Holland is told in the words of the explorers themselves, containing first hand accounts of all the elements of drama, risk and first discovery. Focusing particularly on the contact with the Indigenous people and how they were first described by Europeans, this is an adaption of the discovery story made accessible to the general reader as well as the historian, without compromising the integrity of the original document. These adventurers were men of their own time, constrained by the common beliefs that fashioned the lives of people two hundred and fifty years ago. If some of their words sit uncomfortably with current thinking, we should remind ourselves that some of our own beliefs and actions, might similarly be thought beyond the pale by future generations, and that we too may find ourselves the target of criticism from those who come after us.

Endeavour by Peter Moore Pdf

The Enlightenment was an age of endeavours. From Johnson's Dictionary to campaigns for liberty to schemes for measuring the dimensions of the solar system, Britain was consumed by the impulse for grand projects, undertaken at speed. 'Endeavour' was also the name given to a Whitby collier bought by the Royal Navy in 1768 for an expedition to the South Seas. A commonplace, coal-carrying vessel, no one could have guessed that Endeavour would go on to become the most significant ship in the history of British exploration. Endeavour famously carried James Cook on his first great voyage, visiting Pacific islands unknown to European geography, charting for the first time New Zealand and the eastern coast of Australia and almost foundering on the Great Barrier Reef. But Endeavour has a secret history too. She was there at the Wilkes Riots in London in 1768. During the battles for control of New York in 1776 she witnessed the bloody birth of the United States of America. As well as carrying botanists, a Polynesian priest and the remains of the first kangaroo to arrive in Britain, she transported Newcastle coal and Hessian soldiers. According to Charles Darwin, she helped Cook add a hemisphere to the civilised world. NASA named a space shuttle after her. To others she would be a toxic symbol, responsible for the dispossession of the oldest continuous human society and the disruption of many others. No one has ever told Endeavour's complete story before. Peter Moore sets out to explore the different lives of this remarkable ship, from the acorn that grew into the oak that made her, to her rich and complex legacy.
