One Hundred Books Famous in Children's Literature by Brian Alderson,Henry Nichols Blake Clark,Rachel Eley,Andrea Immel,Justin G. Schiller,John Windle Pdf

For her gorgeously illustrated and deeply researched contribution to the prestigious Grolier Hundred series, Chris Loker has assembled one hundred of the best known and most admired children's books from the English language canon of classics. Organized chronologically, One Hundred Books Famous in Children's Literature invites readers to follow the development of books written for children and printed between 1650 and 2000--from early forms of instructional primers and devotional readers, to exuberantly entertaining nursery rhymes, fairy tales, children's novels and works of verse. Also represented are alphabets, folktales, fables, and legends; a touch-and-feel book, a rebus book, a pop-up book, and, of course, picture books. Supplementing the informative essays that accompany each selection are illuminating contributions by five internationally recognized experts in children's literature: Brian Alderson, Nick Clark, Andrea Immel, Jill Shefrin, and Justin Schiller. This charming and intellectually stimulating volume, accessibly written to appeal to both scholars and the general public, has quickly become the classic checklist for book collectors, scholars, and anyone who loves children's literature.

One Hundred Books Famous in English Literature by Grolier Club Pdf

Excerpt from One Hundred Books Famous in English Literature: With Facsimiles of the Title-Pages These books must of necessity be national books; for fame, which is essentially the highest gift of which man has the giving, cannot be conferred ex cept by a public voice. Fame dwells upon the lips of men. It is not that memorable books must all be people's books, though the greatest are such - the Book of Common Prayer, the Bible, Shake speare; but those which embody some rare intel lectual power, or illuminate some seldom visited tract of the spirit, or merely display some peculiar taste in learning or pastime, must yet have some thing racial in them, something public, to secure their hold against the detaching power of time; they must be English books, not in tongue only, but body and soul. They are not less the books of a nation because they are remote, superfine, un common. Such are the books of the poets - the Faerie Queene; books of the nobles - Arcadia; books of the scholar - the Anatomy of Melan choly. These books open the national genius as truly, kind by kind, as books of knowledge exhibit the nation's advancement in learning, stage by stage, when new sciences are brought to the birth. Bibliographic Notes On One Hundred Books Famous In English Literature: Compiled By Henry W. Kent This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

One Hundred Books Famous in Medicine by Grolier Club Pdf

Catalogue of the landmark exhibition at the Grolier Club, September 20-November 23, 1994. On show were over 100 books, manuscripts, and images chronicling the evolution of medical knowledge, from antiquity to the invention of the CAT scan. Included were original editions of Andreas Vesalius, William Harvey, Edward Jenner, and Alexander Fleming, among others. The catalogue traces the dissemination of formative medical discoveries from the ancient world to the present, from the writings of Hippocrates to those of James Watson and Francis Crick. It is the latest in a series of milestone "Grolier One Hundred" catalogues which delineate a limited number of consequential publications in a particular field shown in special Club exhibitions over the last century--a successor to One Hundred Books Famous in English Literature (1902), One Hundred Influential American Books (1947), and One Hundred Books Famous in Science (1958). Described in full bibliographical detail are notable and, in many cases, unique copies--dedication copies, those bound by eminent bookbinders, those with uncommon illustrations, and those once owned by well-known physicians, scien-tists, or bibliophiles. Written by experts in the history of medicine, the catalogue was edited by Hope Mayo under the direction of Haskell F. Norman, M.D., the curator of the exhibition, whose own celebrated library of science and medicine was sold at auction in 2000. Designed by Jerry Kelly, printed at the Stinehour Press.

One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez Pdf

One of the twentieth century’s enduring works, One Hundred Years of Solitude is a widely beloved and acclaimed novel known throughout the world and the ultimate achievement in a Nobel Prize–winning career. The novel tells the story of the rise and fall of the mythical town of Macondo through the history of the Buendía family. Rich and brilliant, it is a chronicle of life, death, and the tragicomedy of humankind. In the beautiful, ridiculous, and tawdry story of the Buendía family, one sees all of humanity, just as in the history, myths, growth, and decay of Macondo, one sees all of Latin America. Love and lust, war and revolution, riches and poverty, youth and senility, the variety of life, the endlessness of death, the search for peace and truth—these universal themes dominate the novel. Alternately reverential and comical, One Hundred Years of Solitude weaves the political, personal, and spiritual to bring a new consciousness to storytelling. Translated into dozens of languages, this stunning work is no less than an account of the history of the human race.
