The Library Chronicle, 1884, Vol. 1 by Ernest C. Thomas Pdf

Excerpt from The Library Chronicle, 1884, Vol. 1: A Journal of Librarianship and Bibliography The library-keeper's place and office in most countries are looked upon as places of profit and gain. Rather a startling statement to us, who have been accustomed to look upon librarianship as under the special influence of the planet Saturn, which is said to preside over all occupations in which money is obtained with very great difficulty. It would seem, however, that mean as the prizes of librarianship might be, they were yet scrambled for. And so, he continues, accordingly sought after and valued in that regard; and not in regard of the service which is to be done by them unto the Commonwealth of Israel. For the most part men look after the maintenance and livelihood settled upon their places more than upon the end and usefulness of their employments. They seek themselves and not the public therein, and so they subordinate all the advantages of their places to purchase mainly two things thereby, viz., an easy subsistence and some credit in comparison of others, nor is the last much regarded if the first may be had. To speak in particular of library-keepers in most universities that I know, nay, indeed, in all, their places are but mercenary, and their employment of little or no use further than to look to the books committed to their custody, that they may not be lost or embezzled by those that use them, and this is all. The Battle for the American Mind by Carl J. Richard Pdf

The Battle for the American Mind brings together religion, politics, economics, science, and literature to present a compelling history of the American people. In this brief and entertaining book, noted historian Carl J. Richard argues that there have been three worldviews that have dominated American thought--theism, humanism, and skepticism. Theists put their faith in God, humanists in man, and skeptics have faith in neither god nor man. Each worldview has had an epoch of domination, leading to the present "Age of Confusion" where theists, humanists, and skeptics battle one another for control of American hearts and minds. By clearly explaining what Americans believed, exploring why they did so, and showing how that impacted the nation's development, Carl J. Richard presents a unique portrait of the United States--past and present.

The Public Library, Its Place in Our Educational System (Classic Reprint) by E. A. Hardy Pdf

Excerpt from The Public Library, Its Place in Our Educational System The thesis is herein maintained that the public library in Ontario is historically and logically a part of the educational system of the Province. The historical phase is full of in terest and suggestion, not only to those imme diately concerned, but to the library worker elsewhere. The experiments of threequarters of a century have been given in considerable detail, that students of library administration might trace, step by step, the advance from the Niagara library of 1800 and the two early Mechanics' Institutes of 1835 to the well organ izod public library system, of 1911. This accounts also for the inclusion of the appendices A and B (prepared largely by the author). Grateful acknowledgment is made to Professor A. H. Abbott, Professor F. Tracy, and Professor James Mavor, of the University of Toronto, for many suggestions, and to Mr. E. F. Stevens, Pratt Institute Library, Brooklyn, n.y., and Mr. S. H. Ranck, The Public Library, Grand Rapids, Mich, for permission to use the valu able papers given as appendices C and D.
