Open Your Hand by Ilana Blumberg Pdf

Fifteen years into a successful career as a college professor, Ilana Blumberg encounters a crisis in the classroom that sends her back to the most basic questions about education and prompts a life-changing journey that ultimately takes her from East Lansing to Tel Aviv. As she explores how civic and religious commitments shape the culture of her humanities classrooms, Blumberg argues that there is no education without ethics. When we know what sort of society we seek to build, our teaching practices follow. In vivid classroom scenes from kindergarten through middle school to the university level, Blumberg conveys the drama of intellectual discovery as she offers novice and experienced teachers a pedagogy of writing, speaking, reading, and thinking that she links clearly to the moral and personal development of her students. Writing as an observant Jew and as an American, Blumberg does not shy away from the difficult challenge of balancing identities in the twenty-first century: how to remain true to a community of origin while being a national and global citizen. As she negotiates questions of faith and citizenship in the wide range of classrooms she traverses, Blumberg reminds us that teaching - and learning - are nothing short of a moral art, and that the future of our society depends on it.

The Open Hand by Barry M. Kroll Pdf

Based on five years of classroom experimentation, The Open Hand presents a highly practical yet transformational philosophy of teaching argumentative writing. In his course Arguing as an Art of Peace, Barry Kroll uses the open hand to represent an alternative approach to argument, asking students to argue in a way that promotes harmony rather than divisiveness and avoiding conventional conflict-based approaches. Kroll cultivates a bodily investigation of noncombative argument, offering direct pedagogical strategies anchored in three modalities of learning—conceptual-procedural, kinesthetic, and contemplative—and projects, activities, assignments, informal responses, and final papers for students. Kinesthetic exercises derived from martial arts and contemplative meditation and mindfulness practices are key to the approach, with Kroll specifically using movement as a physical analogy for tactics of arguing. Collaboration, mediation, and empathy are important yet overlooked values in communicative exchange. This practical, engaging, and accessible guide for teachers contains clear examples and compelling discussions of pedagogical strategies that teach students not only how to write persuasively but also how to deal with personal conflict in their daily lives.

Hero, Hawk, and Open Hand by Richard F. Townsend Pdf

Along the Ohio, Tennessee, and Mississippi Rivers, the archaeological remains of earthen pyramids, plazas, large communities, and works of art and artifacts testify to Native American civilizations that thrived there between 3000 B.C. and A.D. 1500. This fascinating book presents exciting new information on the art and cultures of these ancient peoples and features hundreds of gorgeous photographs of important artworks, artifacts, and ritual objects excavated from Amerindian archaeological sites. Drawing on excavation findings and extensive research, the contributors to the book document a succession of distinct ancient populations in the pre-Columbian world of the American Midwest and Southeast. A team of interdisciplinary scholars examines the connections between archaeological remains of different regions and the themes, forms, and rituals that continue in specific tribes of today. The book also includes the personal reflections of contemporary Native Americans who discuss their perspectives on the significance of the fascinating and beautiful prehistoric artifacts as well as their own cultural practices today.

Words from Awaki by Bernetha George, MD Pdf

Don’t believe the hype; believe what you see. Apocalypse, as we have come to fear, is not apocalypse as it truly is. We live today in the time of “apocalypse,” and for some, it is pure torment. For those around the world living with bombs raining down on them, yes, that is apocalyptic torture as we feared. For those thousands and millions, throughout the universe, visited and killed by the deadly flu and flu-like diseases (SARS, swine flu, bird flu, West Nile virus, etc.), Ebola, tuberculosis, measles, cholera, dengue fever, EV-D68, and HIV/AIDS, yes, those are apocalyptic diseases as we feared. For those ravished, killed, left homeless, and totally dispossessed by these record-breaking seemingly “wicked” weather events we are currently experiencing, yes, they would agree that these are for certain apocalyptic changes as we feared. However, given there are over seven billion of us on the planet and those apocalyptic events mentioned have only killed millions, not billions, of us, they don’t seem to rise to the level of chaos and destruction we have been conditioned to fear as being apocalyptic. Nevertheless, our over exaggerated, deep-seated, and conditioned fears notwithstanding, Armageddon is upon us, and the signs of it have been for almost twenty years that we know of. Those above mentioned apocalyptic occurrences are the signs we were all told would be by “John the Revelator” in Revelation. November 1995 to May 1996, no fewer than seventy of us were told by an angel, Awaki, and his Angels of God that the signs had already begun and that Armageddon would begin in the year 2000. Our story, no matter how far-fetched it may seem, is true. The evidentiary events of war, disease, and bizarre weather changes we witness daily provide for us the credibility of what we were told. The angel Shakardak told us, “Some will see and they will believe, some will not see and they will believe, some will hear and they will believe, and some will not hear and they will believe; and then there will be those who will see and they will not believe, and there will be those who will hear and they will not believe.”
