Splitting Algorithms, Modern Operator Theory, and Applications by Heinz H. Bauschke,Regina S. Burachik,D. Russell Luke Pdf

This book brings together research articles and state-of-the-art surveys in broad areas of optimization and numerical analysis with particular emphasis on algorithms. The discussion also focuses on advances in monotone operator theory and other topics from variational analysis and nonsmooth optimization, especially as they pertain to algorithms and concrete, implementable methods. The theory of monotone operators is a central framework for understanding and analyzing splitting algorithms. Topics discussed in the volume were presented at the interdisciplinary workshop titled Splitting Algorithms, Modern Operator Theory, and Applications held in Oaxaca, Mexico in September, 2017. Dedicated to Jonathan M. Borwein, one of the most versatile mathematicians in contemporary history, this compilation brings theory together with applications in novel and insightful ways.

Operator Theory, Operator Algebras, and Applications by Great Plains Operator Theory Symposium Pdf

This book offers a presentation of some new trends in operator theory and operator algebras, with a view to their applications. It consists of separate papers written by some of the leading practitioners in the field. The content is put together by the three editors in a way that should help students and working mathematicians in other parts of the mathematical sciences gain insight into an important part of modern mathematics and its applications. While different specialist authors are outlining new results in this book, the presentations have been made user friendly with the aid of tutorial material. In fact, each paper contains three things: a friendly introduction with motivation, tutorial material, and new research. The authors have strived to make their results relevant to the rest of mathematics. A list of topics discussed in the book includes wavelets, frames and their applications, quantum dynamics, multivariable operator theory, $C*$-algebras, and von Neumann algebras. Some longer papers present recent advances on particular, long-standing problems such as extensions and dilations, the Kadison-Singer conjecture, and diagonals of self-adjoint operators.

Limit Operators and Their Applications in Operator Theory by Vladimir Rabinovich,Steffen Roch,Bernd Silbermann Pdf

This is the first monograph devoted to a fairly wide class of operators, namely band and band-dominated operators and their Fredholm theory. The main tool in studying this topic is limit operators. Applications are presented to several important classes of such operators: convolution type operators and pseudo-differential operators on bad domains and with bad coefficients.

Lectures on Operator Theory and Its Applications by Albrecht Böttcher Pdf

Much of the importance of mathematics lies in its ability to provide theories which are useful in widely different fields of endeavour. A good example is the large and amorphous body of knowledge known as the theory of linear operators or operator theory, which came to life about a century ago as a theory to encompass properties common to matrix, differential, and integral operators. Thus, it is a primary purpose of operator theory to provide a coherent body of knowledge which can explain phenomena common to the enormous variety of problems in which such linear operators play a part. The theory is a vital part of functional analysis, whose methods and techniques are one of the major advances of twentieth century mathematics and now play a pervasive role in the modeling of phenomena in probability, imaging, signal processing, systems theory, etc, as well as in the more traditional areas of theoretical physics and mechanics. This book is based on lectures presented at a meeting on operator theory and its applications held at the Fields Institute in 1994.

Applications of Functional Analysis and Operator Theory by V. Hutson,J. Pym,M. Cloud Pdf

Functional analysis is a powerful tool when applied to mathematical problems arising from physical situations. The present book provides, by careful selection of material, a collection of concepts and techniques essential for the modern practitioner. Emphasis is placed on the solution of equations (including nonlinear and partial differential equations). The assumed background is limited to elementary real variable theory and finite-dimensional vector spaces. Provides an ideal transition between introductory math courses and advanced graduate study in applied mathematics, the physical sciences, or engineering Gives the reader a keen understanding of applied functional analysis, building progressively from simple background material to the deepest and most significant results Introduces each new topic with a clear, concise explanation Includes numerous examples linking fundamental principles with applications Solidifies the reader's understanding with numerous end-of-chapter problems

Applications of q-Calculus in Operator Theory by Ali Aral,Vijay Gupta,Ravi P. Agarwal Pdf

The approximation of functions by linear positive operators is an important research topic in general mathematics and it also provides powerful tools to application areas such as computer-aided geometric design, numerical analysis, and solutions of differential equations. q-Calculus is a generalization of many subjects, such as hypergeometric series, complex analysis, and particle physics. This monograph is an introduction to combining approximation theory and q-Calculus with applications, by using well- known operators. The presentation is systematic and the authors include a brief summary of the notations and basic definitions of q-calculus before delving into more advanced material. The many applications of q-calculus in the theory of approximation, especially on various operators, which includes convergence of operators to functions in real and complex domain forms the gist of the book. This book is suitable for researchers and students in mathematics, physics and engineering, and for professionals who would enjoy exploring the host of mathematical techniques and ideas that are collected and discussed in the book.

Elements of Hilbert Spaces and Operator Theory by Harkrishan Lal Vasudeva Pdf

The book presents an introduction to the geometry of Hilbert spaces and operator theory, targeting graduate and senior undergraduate students of mathematics. Major topics discussed in the book are inner product spaces, linear operators, spectral theory and special classes of operators, and Banach spaces. On vector spaces, the structure of inner product is imposed. After discussing geometry of Hilbert spaces, its applications to diverse branches of mathematics have been studied. Along the way are introduced orthogonal polynomials and their use in Fourier series and approximations. Spectrum of an operator is the key to the understanding of the operator. Properties of the spectrum of different classes of operators, such as normal operators, self-adjoint operators, unitaries, isometries and compact operators have been discussed. A large number of examples of operators, along with their spectrum and its splitting into point spectrum, continuous spectrum, residual spectrum, approximate point spectrum and compression spectrum, have been worked out. Spectral theorems for self-adjoint operators, and normal operators, follow the spectral theorem for compact normal operators. The book also discusses invariant subspaces with special attention to the Volterra operator and unbounded operators. In order to make the text as accessible as possible, motivation for the topics is introduced and a greater amount of explanation than is usually found in standard texts on the subject is provided. The abstract theory in the book is supplemented with concrete examples. It is expected that these features will help the reader get a good grasp of the topics discussed. Hints and solutions to all the problems are collected at the end of the book. Additional features are introduced in the book when it becomes imperative. This spirit is kept alive throughout the book.

Basic Operator Theory by Israel Gohberg,Seymour Goldberg Pdf

rii application of linear operators on a Hilbert space. We begin with a chapter on the geometry of Hilbert space and then proceed to the spectral theory of compact self adjoint operators; operational calculus is next presented as a nat ural outgrowth of the spectral theory. The second part of the text concentrates on Banach spaces and linear operators acting on these spaces. It includes, for example, the three 'basic principles of linear analysis and the Riesz Fredholm theory of compact operators. Both parts contain plenty of applications. All chapters deal exclusively with linear problems, except for the last chapter which is an introduction to the theory of nonlinear operators. In addition to the standard topics in functional anal ysis, we have presented relatively recent results which appear, for example, in Chapter VII. In general, in writ ing this book, the authors were strongly influenced by re cent developments in operator theory which affected the choice of topics, proofs and exercises. One of the main features of this book is the large number of new exercises chosen to expand the reader's com prehension of the material, and to train him or her in the use of it. In the beginning portion of the book we offer a large selection of computational exercises; later, the proportion of exercises dealing with theoretical questions increases. We have, however, omitted exercises after Chap ters V, VII and XII due to the specialized nature of the subject matter.
