Optical Methods for Solid Mechanics by Pramod K. Rastogi,Erwin Hack Pdf

Unique within the field for being written in a tutorial style, this textbook adopts a step-by-step approach to the background needed for understanding a wide range of full-field optical measurement techniques in solid mechanics. This method familiarizes readers with the essentials of imaging and full-field optical measurement techniques, helping them to identify the appropriate techniques and in assessing measurement systems. In addition, readers learn the appropriate rules of thumb as a guide to better experimental performance from the applied techniques. Rather than presenting an exhaustive overview on the subject, each chapter provides a concise introduction to the concepts and principles, integrates solved problems within the text, summarizes the essence at the end, and includes unsolved problems. With its coverage of topics also relevant for industry, this text is aimed at graduate students, researchers, and engineers involved in non-destructive testing for acoustics, mechanics, medicine, diagnosis on artwork and construction, and civil engineering.

Handbook of Optical Metrology by Toru Yoshizawa Pdf

The field of optical metrology offers a wealth of both practical and theoretical accomplishments, and can cite any number of academic papers recording such. However, while several books covering specific areas of optical metrology do exist, until the pages herein were researched, written, and compiled, the field lacked for a comprehensive handbook, one providing an overview of optical metrology that covers practical applications as well as fundamentals. Carefully designed to make information accessible to beginners without sacrificing academic rigor, the Handbook of Optical Metrology: Principles and Applications discusses fundamental principles and techniques before exploring practical applications. With contributions from veterans in the field, as well as from up-and-coming researchers, the Handbook offers 30 substantial and well-referenced chapters. In addition to the introductory matter, forward-thinking descriptions are included in every chapter that make this a valuable reference for all those involved with optical metrology.

Optical Methods in Dynamics of Fluids and Solids by M. Pichal Pdf

The General Assembly of the International Union of Theoreti cal and Applied Mechanics decided in Cambridge, United King dom, in 1982 to arrange the Symposium on Optical Methods in the Dynamics of Fluids and Solids. This decision was stimu lated by the fact that optical diagnostic methods are a more and more important tool in experimental mechanics. In contrast to the foregoing Symposium in Poitiers. 1976, which was devoted exclusively to optical methods in the me chanics of solids, it was a fruitful idea to bring together during the present Symposium scientists engaged in optical methods in the dynamics of all phases. It was proposed by the International Scientific Committee of the Symposium that contributions in experimental fluid dynamics should deal with transition from laminar to turbu lent flow, compressible fluid flow including high temperatu re flow, non-equilibrium phenomena in fluid dynamics and the interaction of fluid flow with solid boundaries and bodies. As regard. the mechanics of solids, the contributions should deal with the application of optical methods in the wave propagation in shock loaded bodies, in phenomena connected with the fracture mechanism, in nonstationary Vibrations of elements and parts of systems and in nonstationary strains in structures. The International Scientific Committee preferred to avoid invited lectures and in cooperation with the National Com mittees of IUTAM called for contribution from individual countries.

IUTAM Symposium on Advanced Optical Methods and Applications in Solid Mechanics by Alexis Lagarde Pdf

The request to organize under its patronage at Poitiers in 1998 a Symposium entitled “Advanced Optical Methods and Applications in Solid Mechanics” by the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (I.U.T.A.M.) was well received for the following two reasons. First, for nearly 20 years no Symposium devoted to optical methods in solids had been organized. Second, recent advances in digital image processing provided many new applications which are described in the following. We have the honour to present here the proceedings of this Symposium. st th The Symposium took place from august 31 to September 4 at the Institut International de la Prospective in Futuroscope near Poitiers. A significant number of internationally renowned specialists had expressed their wish to participate in this meeting. The Scientific Committee proposed 16 general conferences and selected 33 regular lectures and 17 poster presentations. Papers corresponding to posters are not differentiated in the proceedings from those that were presented orally. It is worth noting that a total of 80 participants, representing 16 countries, registered for this symposium.. The Scientific Committee deserves praise for attracting a significant number of young scientists, both as authors and as participants. Let us add our warm acknowledgements to Professor J.W. Dally and to Professor A.S. Kobayashi who, throughout the symposium preparation time, brought us valuable help.

Optical Methods of Engineering Analysis by Gary L. Cloud Pdf

Fundamental measurement problems in engineering, mechanics, manufacturing, and physics are now being solved by powerful optical methods. This book presents a lucid, up-to-date discussion of these optical methods. Beginning from a firm base in modern optics, the book proceeds through relevant theory of interference and diffraction and integrates this theory with descriptions of laboratory techniques and apparatus. Among the techniques discussed are classical interferometry, photoelasticity, geometric moire, spatial filtering, moire interferometry, holography, holographic interferometry, laser speckle interferometry, and video-based speckle methods. By providing a firm base in the physical principles and at the same time allowing the reader to perform meaningful experiments related to the topic being studied, the book offers a unique user-oriented approach that will appeal to students, researchers and practising engineers.

Optical Methods in Mechanics of Solids by Alexis Lagarde Pdf

In 1976, the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (I.U.T.A.M.) agreed to hold a 1979 Symposium on "Optical Methods in Mechanics of Solids" at the University of Poitiers, France. The Labaratory of Mechanics of Solids at the University of Poitiers, a research team associated with the French National Center for Scientific Research (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, C.N.R.S.) was in charge of the organization. The symposium was held at the Ecole Nationale Superieure de Mecanique et d'Aerotechnique (E.N.S.M.A.), from the lOth to the 14th of September. We have the honour of presenting here the proceedings of this symposium. This initiave, taken by I.U.T.A.M., was based on the conviction that the time was favourable to point out in the vast domain of experimental methods in mechanics of solids the considerable benefits of the new techniques that became available through the use of the properties of laser radiation. Our experience has shown the validity of this point of view. A significant number of internationally renowned specialists had, in fact, manifested the wish to participate in this meeting and to be invited to present a paper. For instance, the Scientific Committee, after examining 71 proposed papers, selected for presentation 21 short communications (20 minutes of presentation) in addition to 24 regular communications (35 minutes of presentation) .

Experimental Mechanics by Emmanuel E. Gdoutos Pdf

The book presents in a clear, simple, straightforward, novel and unified manner the most used methods of experimental mechanics of solids for the determination of displacements, strains and stresses. Emphasis is given on the principles of operation of the various methods, not in their applications to engineering problems. The book is divided into sixteen chapters which include strain gages, basic optics, geometric and interferometric moiré, optical methods (photoelasticity, interferometry, holography, caustics, speckle methods, digital image correlation), thermoelastic stress analysis, indentation, optical fibers, nondestructive testing, and residual stresses. The book will be used not only as a learning tool, but as a basis on which the researcher, the engineer, the experimentalist, the student can develop their new own ideas to promote research in experimental mechanics of solids.
