Graphene Oxide by Ayrat M. Dimiev,Siegfied Eigler Pdf

Due to its unique properties, graphene oxide has become one of the most studied materials of the last decade and a great variety of applications have been reported in areas such as sensors, catalysis and biomedical applications. This comprehensive volume systematically describes the fundamental aspects and applications of graphene oxide. The book is designed as an introduction to the topic, so each chapter begins with a discussion on fundamental concepts, then proceeds to review and summarize recent advances in the field. Divided into two parts, the first part covers fundamental aspects of graphene oxide and includes chapters on formation and chemical structure, characterization methods, reduction methods, rheology and optical properties of graphene oxide solutions. Part Two covers numerous graphene oxide applications including field effect transistors, transparent conductive films, sensors, energy harvesting and storage, membranes, composite materials, catalysis and biomedical applications. In each case the differences and advantages of graphene oxide over its non-oxidised counterpart are discussed. The book concludes with a chapter on the challenges of industrial-scale graphene oxide production. Graphene Oxide: Fundamentals and Applications is a valuable reference for academic researchers, and industry scientists interested in graphene oxide, graphene and other carbon materials.

Optical Properties of Graphene in Magnetic and Electric Fields by Chiun-Yan Lin Pdf

Optical Properties of Graphene in Magnetic and Electric Fields provides a synthesis of up to date research on the optical properties of graphene, drawing from both experimental and theoretical research. The focus is primarily on multilayer graphenes with a focus on Landau-level spectra and the generalised tight-binding model. The interplay between external fields and the geometric configuration determines relationships between the components of wave functions in different sublattices. This leads to observation that the optical properties display a strong dependence on the stacking configuration and the number of layers. In general, this model can reasonably comprehend the quantization effect in arbitrarily stacked graphenes as well as other layered 2D materials such as MoS2 and silicene. Comparisons between theoretical and experimental work are drawn, as are the different graphene synthesis methods.

Graphene Quantum Dots by Alev Devrim Güçlü,Pawel Potasz,Marek Korkusinski,Pawel Hawrylak Pdf

This book reflects the current status of theoretical and experimental research of graphene based nanostructures, in particular quantum dots, at a level accessible to young researchers, graduate students, experimentalists and theorists. It presents the current state of research of graphene quantum dots, a single or few monolayer thick islands of graphene. It introduces the reader to the electronic and optical properties of graphite, intercalated graphite and graphene, including Dirac fermions, Berry's phase associated with sublattices and valley degeneracy, covers single particle properties of graphene quantum dots, electron-electron interaction, magnetic properties and optical properties of gated graphene nanostructures. The electronic, optical and magnetic properties of the graphene quantum dots as a function of size, shape, type of edge and carrier density are considered. Special attention is paid to the understanding of edges and the emergence of edge states for zigzag edges. Atomistic tight binding and effective mass approaches to single particle calculations are performed. Furthermore, the theoretical and numerical treatment of electron-electron interactions at the mean-field, HF, DFT and configuration-interaction level is described in detail.

Electronic Properties of Graphene Heterostructures with Hexagonal Crystals by John R. Wallbank Pdf

The last decade has witnessed the discovery of, and dramatic progress in understanding the physics of graphene and related two-dimensional materials. The development of methods for manufacturing and aligning high-quality two-dimensional crystals has facilitated the creation of a new generation of materials: the heterostructures of graphene with hexagonal crystals, in which the graphene electrons acquire new, qualitatively different properties. This thesis provides a comprehensive theoretical framework in which to understand these heterostructures, based on the tight binding model, perturbation theory, group theory and the concept of the moire superlattice (all of which are elucidated). It explains how graphene heterostructures provide new opportunities for tailoring band structure, such as creating additional Dirac points or opening band gaps and how they manifest themselves in transport measurements, optical absorption spectra and the fractal Hofstadter spectra. Also considered are the heterostructures of bilayer graphene and resonant tunneling in aligned graphene/insulator/graphene devices.

Carbon nanotubes and graphene for photonic applications by K. Matsuda Pdf

The fundamental electronic states and optical properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes are briefly explained in this chapter. Moreover, the novel optical properties of carbon nanotubes revealed by advanced laser spectroscopy (single-nanotube spectroscopy and time-resolved spectroscopy) are introduced. Due to the enhanced Coulomb interaction, the optically generated electron-hole pair forms a strongly bound ‘exciton’ state, analogous to the hydrogen-like state in the carbon nanotubes. The striking features of excitons in the carbon nanotube, such as singlet-dark states and triplet states, which dominate the optical properties, are described in this chapter.

Geometric and Electronic Properties of Graphene-Related Systems by Ngoc Thanh Thuy Tran,Shih-Yang Lin,Chiun-Yan Lin,Ming-Fa Lin Pdf

Due to its physical, chemical, and material properties, graphene has been widely studied both theoretically and experimentally since it was first synthesized in 2004. This book explores in detail the most up-to-date research in graphene-related systems, including few-layer graphene, sliding bilayer graphene, rippled graphene, carbon nanotubes, and adatom-doped graphene, among others. It focuses on the structure-, stacking-, layer-, orbital-, spin- and adatom-dependent essential properties, in which single- and multi-orbital chemical bondings can account for diverse phenomena. Geometric and Electronic Properties of Graphene-Related Systems: Chemical Bonding Schemes is excellent for graduate students and researchers, but understandable to undergraduates. The detailed theoretical framework developed in this book can be used in the future characterization of emergent materials.
