Optimal Control of Distributed Nuclear Reactors by G.S. Christensen,S.A. Soliman,R. Nieva Pdf

This book is devoted to the mathematical optimization theory and modeling techniques that recently have been applied to the problem of controlling the shape and intensity of the power density distribution in the core of large nuclear reactors. The book has been prepared with the following purposes in mind: 1. To provide, in a condensed manner, the background preparation on reactor kinetics required for a comprehensive description of the main problems encountered in designing spatial control systems for nuclear reactor cores. 2. To present the work that has already been done on this subject and provide the basic mathematical tools required for a full understand ing of the different methods proposed in the literature. 3. To stimulate further work in this challenging area by weighting the advantages and disadvantages of the existing techniques and evaluating their effectiveness and applicability. In addition to coverage of the standard topics on the subject of optimal control for distributed parametersystems, the book includes, at amathemati cal level suitable for graduate students in engineering, discussions of con ceptsoffunctional analysis, the representation theory ofgroups, and integral equations. Although these topics constitute a requisite for a full understanding of the new developments in the area of reactor modeling and control, they are seidom treated together in a single book and, when they are, their presenta tion isoften directed to the mathematician. They are thus relatively unknown to the engineering community.

In this book, we study theoretical and practical aspects of computing methods for mathematical modelling of nonlinear systems. A number of computing techniques are considered, such as methods of operator approximation with any given accuracy; operator interpolation techniques including a non-Lagrange interpolation; methods of system representation subject to constraints associated with concepts of causality, memory and stationarity; methods of system representation with an accuracy that is the best within a given class of models; methods of covariance matrix estimation;methods for low-rank matrix approximations; hybrid methods based on a combination of iterative procedures and best operator approximation; andmethods for information compression and filtering under condition that a filter model should satisfy restrictions associated with causality and different types of memory. As a result, the book represents a blend of new methods in general computational analysis, and specific, but also generic, techniques for study of systems theory ant its particularbranches, such as optimal filtering and information compression. - Best operator approximation,- Non-Lagrange interpolation,- Generic Karhunen-Loeve transform- Generalised low-rank matrix approximation- Optimal data compression- Optimal nonlinear filtering

Optimal Control of Distributed Nuclear Reactors Using Functional Analysis by Rolando Nieva Gómez Pdf

The minimum norm formalism of functional analysis is applied to the problem of controlling the neutron flux distribution in nuclear reactors. The application of the optimization technique is first described in terms of a general linear distributed parameter model. The general results thus obtained are later particularized to the specific case of a homogeneous slab reactor with the one-energy neutronic model. The reduction of distributed parameter systems into decoupled and more tractable subsystems is discussed. It is demonstrated how symmetry principles can facilitate the practical implementation of the optimization techniques to more realistic distributed models which may include for example reactor configurations in two or three dimensions. A new model expansion method is developed for solving the system of partial differential equations that describe the transient behavior of the most important fission product concentrations in thermal nuclear reactors.

Advances in Control Systems by C. T. Leondes Pdf

Advances in Control Systems: Theory and Applications, Volume 5 provides information pertinent to the significant progress in the field of control and systems theory and applications. This book presents the problem of the optimal control of a system. Organized into six chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the fundamental conditions in the calculus of variations that are basic to the optimal control problem. This text then examines one of the basic problems in control and systems theory in general. Other chapters consider a number of rather basic results in optimal nonlinear filtering and describe the characteristic function of the state of vector of a nonlinear system. This book discusses as well a significant application area of control and systems theory, which is the optimal control of nuclear reactors. The final chapter deals with optimal control with bounds on the state variables. This book is a valuable resource for practicing engineers.
