Minimum weight design of aerospace structres has evolved during the past two decades into a rather rigorous scientific discipline that permits the rational selection of structural configurations and materials for various design requirements. Because of the pertinence of this body of literature to the structural design of advanced aerospace vehicles, a comprehensive bibliography of published literature on optimim structural design has been compiled and reviewed herein. In Part 1, a critical historical review highlights the significant advances in the literature concerned with analytical optimum design techniques for various structural elements, materials and thermal protection systems. The annotated bibliography is contained in Part 2. In Part 3, the current state of the art of the theory of optimum structural and thermostructural design is assessed. Included are the derivation of design indices resulting from various design requirements, a generalized presentation of optimum design theory and preferred methods of presenting optimum design results. Structural optimization, a broad interdisciplinary field, requires skillful combining of mathematical and mechanical knowledge with engineering. It is both intellectually attractive and technologically rewarding. The Symposium on Optimization in Structural Design was the second IUTAM Symposium in Poland. Fifteen years have elapsed since the Symposium on Nonhomogeneity in Elasticity and Plasticity, presided by Professor Olszak, was held in Warsaw. These fifteen years mean a lot for mechanics in Poland. Continuing the tradition of Professor Maksymilian Tytus Huber's research, considerable development of the mechanical sciences has been achieved in this country mostly due to the knowledge, vision and persistence of Professors Wit old Nowacki and Waclaw Olszak, eminent Members of our Academy. The Institute of Fundamental Technological Research was established, competent research groups grew, matured and contri buted to thermo-elasticity, plasticity, general theory of constitutive equations, and to structural mechanics-just to mention a few do mains. Mechanics is now penetrating into the technology of this country at an accelerating pace. The optimization in mechanics has a tradition in Poland. In 1936 Professor Zbigniew Wasiutynski formulated the optimality criterion for mean stiffness design using an elastic energy concept. Further work in this field has been done since, mostly in the last ten years. This report describes a rapid reanalysis technique (reducing analysis costs by factors between 2 and 100) and a rapid search procedure (reducing the number of design steps by a factor of 25) for obtaining optimum designs. Reanalysis is an approximate procedure based on extremum energy principles and leading, monotonically, to results as exact as desired. THe desing process is an allocation procedure. Each element of the structure is sized in turn. Optimization is addressed toward least weight design of truss systems with multiple loadings and a discrete set of admissible sizings (materials). The new technique can easily include prestress as a design variable. It can be extended to treat any set of finite elements and is based on use of the force or displacement method or both. Because of the modularity of calculations, it is well suited to computer implementation for multi-element structural systems.

Structural-efficiency analyses are used to determine the minimum-mass proportions of some panel configurations loaded in uniaxial compression. Five panel constructions, four of which incorporate circular-arc elements and the other a beaded-web corrugation, are shown to have improved structural efficiencies over conventional configurations. In addition to the structural-efficiency equations, which give the mass equivalent flat-plate thickness of the panel necessary to carry a given load, related design equations for calculating the cross-sectional dimensions of these minimum-mass panels are presented. The upper and lower limits of loading, where the design constraints of minimum gage or material yield strength become the dominant design conditions, are established and the corresponding design equations which are applicable outside these limits are also presented.
