For their great commercial importance as a human food delicacy, crayfish are now becoming of wider interest to molecular biologists, and also to conservationists due to the fact that in some countries many of the native crayfish species are under threat from human activity, disease, and competition from other introduced crayfish species. Helmed by three editors in Japan, Europe, and the US, this book invites contributions from experts around the globe, covering the conservation status and biology of all endangered species, taxonomy, and distribution of crayfishes worldwide.

The Virgin by Hannah Blue Heron Pdf

Hannah Blue Heron’s many readers will be delighted with The Virgin, her first novel. Living in prehistoric times (c. 3200 BCE), the Temple Virgins serve the Goddess, Inanna, by bringing men from the local villages into union with Her in ecstasy. Their village of Al-Rah is threatened by the teachings of the rough men from the North, the Kurgans, who denigrate women and are beginning to destroy the temples of the Goddesses, replacing them with temples to their fierce Gods. At only twelve sun journeys of age, Ashannah is commanded by the village Oracle to lead the women of Al-Rah over the Great Mountain, which they have never attempted to climb beyond the lowest foothills. Ashannah is filled with fear and confusion. How would she know the way? Unpredictable appearances of Inanna to Ashannah help them begin their journey. Common sense and great determination get them through danger, loss and near starvation. They finally get over the mountain and down into the beautiful valley, only to find that there is already a village of men inhabiting it. The surprising ending, is, in some some ways, no ending at all.

Early Numeracy by Robert J Wright,James Martland,Ann K Stafford Pdf

′Unlike many books based on research work this book doesn′t just let teachers know what is going wrong with children′s learning it actually gives some practical advice about what to do next. The whole book is based upon extensive observation and recording of individual children and their difficulties with mathematics. These children are the most difficult to plan for in a busy classroom and the authors appreciate the small steps and the different learning styles approaches needed for these children. This approach fits well with the NNS wave and springboard materials but takes the analysis of the individual′s difficulties to a more detailed level. The book brings together research carried out across a range of countries and therefore shows the versatility of the approaches taken. This will be a very useful book for trainee teachers as it exemplifies how to use assessment to feed into teaching. It will be helpful for class teachers and mathematics co-ordinators as well as SENCOs to assist in improving the teaching and learning for specific children in our schools′ - Mary Briggs, Primary and Early Years PGCE Co-ordinator, Institute of Education, University of Warwick ′This is a highly practical resource that will be appreciated by classroom and specialist teachers alike. It will provide teachers new to the Math Recovery program with practical help and support to diagnose errors and misconceptions in early numeracy. Practicing Math Recovery Specialists will be thrilled with the addition of four new highly focused assessments and an elaboration of the Learning Framework in Number. Early Numeracy is admirably grounded in international research and well-established theory, characteristics that are much sought after in the current data driven educational environment. Like many others, I was drawn to Math Recovery after reading the first edition of Early Numeracy. This second edition is a treasure - it is exciting to consider the impact it will have on children and teachers, and to the growth of the Math Recovery program′ - Audrey Murray, Lead Teacher, Midwest Math Recovery Training Center, Minneapolis This text has been fully updated to include developments and refinements brought about by widespread international application of the assessment tools in the Mathematics Recovery Programme. The book will help practitioners to identify and provide detailed analyses of all children but especially those who are able and those who underachieve in early numeracy. It will enable teachers, learning support personnel, numeracy consultants and educational psychologists to advise colleagues and parents on children′s number knowledge and strategies for early numeracy. The Mathematics Recovery Programme has been successfully applied in Australia, the United Kingdom and Ireland, the United States and Canada, both in specialist interventions and classroom settings. The revised version shows how familiarisation with, and understanding of, the diagnostic assessment tools has allowed teachers to become more knowledgeable in understanding children′s difficulties and misconceptions, and more skilled and confident in planning programmes of intervention and monitoring the children′s progress. This new edition includes: - Integrated frameworks of useful tasks for assessing children′s number knowledge and strategies; - Four separate and revised diagnostic assessment interviews; - Assessments for addition and subtraction strategies, Base Ten Arithmetical strategies, Early Grouping strategies, and Advanced Grouping strategies in the four operations; - How the assessment process has impacted significantly on teachers′ professional development and contributed to the raising of standards in early numeracy.

A Systematic Catalogue of the Zygaenidae by Hoffmann,W G Tremewan Pdf

This work reflects modern concepts of systematics at the generic, specific and subspecific levels and aims to update the now outdated catalogue by Reiss & Tremewan (1967), and to bring stability into the nomenclature. The author, date and literature reference of each nominal taxon are cited, together with full synonymies. Type localities of taxa at species and subspecies levels are provided, as well as the range of each species and the distribution of each subspecies. Larval host-plants are listed under each zygaenid species (and vice-versa) and are also indexed by family and species. Literature references are annotated with the same key-words that were used in the Bibliography, to which the Catalogue is a companion and to which this work also contains an updating supplement. It concludes with an index of valid nominal taxa and their synoyms.

The Soloist by Nicholas Christopher Pdf

At thirty–four, piano soloist Max Randal has hit a wall. It's been four years since his last live performance, and his manager is intent on revitalizing his career with a big concert at Carnegie Hall. As if that wouldn't be enough for Max to worry about, as he struggles to prepare, the ghosts of his failed relationships have come to haunt him — his first ex–wife is dying, his second ex–wife wants to get back together, the mother of his child has taken off for Europe and unexpectedly left him to care for their nine–year–old, and his present girlfriend now wants to get serious. Believe it or not, the plot only gets thicker. Merging dozens of characters and events into a seamless narrative, gifted novelist and poet Nicholas Christopher delivers a compelling tale. Like an exhilarating performance, The Soloist takes you on a brilliant adventure that resonates even once it's over.

A Systematic Catalogue of the Genus Zygaena Fabricius (Lepidoptera: Zygaenidae) by H. Reiss,W.G. Tremewan Pdf

It is forty years since Burgeff published, in 1926, the first comprehensive catalogue of the genus Zygaena Fabricius, forming part 33 of the Lepidopterorum Catalogus. Following the pattern and general layout of Burgeff's work, we have attempted to produce a catalogue in which all names in the genus Zygaena are included, with references to the literature where these names were originally published. Additional references are included when these refer to illustrations of a species, subspecies or form, or to a taxonomic change, e.g., a change in status. References to misidentifications are generally omitted unless a new species has been described at a later date. In compiling this work we have adhered to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature as adopted by the XV International Congress of Zoology. However, although the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature recognises the necessity of names of lower rank than subspecies, they do not at present deal with such names. The provisions of the Code do not apply to them and, therefore, such names have no nomenclatural status. Every subspecies is given equal status in the catalogue although their relative value is not always the same. Certain authors have very often separated sub species on minute differences and a subsequent examination of further material, taken over a number of years, has shown that the differences are not always constant. In many cases, however, we have been unable to verify the status of each subspecies.

A Global Overview of the Conservation of Freshwater Decapod Crustaceans by Tadashi Kawai,Neil Cumberlidge Pdf

This book introduces updated information on conservation issues, providing an overview of what is needed to advance the global conservation of freshwater decapods such as freshwater crabs, crayfish, and shrimps. Biodiversity loss in general is highest in organisms that depend on intact freshwater habitats, because freshwater ecosystems worldwide are suffering intense threats from multiple sources. Our understanding of the number and location of threatened species of decapods, and of the nature of their extinction threats has improved greatly in recent years, and has enabled the development of species conservation strategies. This volume focuses on saving threatened species from extinction, and emphasizes the importance of the successful implementation of conservation action plans through cooperation between scientists, conservationists, educators, funding agencies, policy makers, and conservation agencies.
