Light-Duty Vehicle Carbon Emission Standards and the Rebound Effect by Jiayu Wang,Tiansen Liu,Yun Tong Pdf

This book provides a comprehensive understanding of the proposed Australian light vehicle fuel efficiency standards, and captures the economy-wide economic and environmental impacts of the policy. Its theoretical analysis of the behaviour of the household and the firm, together with the CGE simulations that use results from a detailed engineering fleet model, captures the economy-wide economic and environmental impacts of the policy, which are essential for policymakers in evaluating each policy option. The book investigates the effect of energy efficiency improvement on energy consumption, and answers the question of whether energy efficiency improvement could achieve the goal of reducing energy consumption. Furthermore, this research examines how much energy will be conserved by the proposed Australian light vehicle emissions standards in a computable general equilibrium (CGE) model. The importance of understanding the mechanism of the rebound effect on different scopes has implications for both economic theory and climate policy.

Adversarial and Uncertain Reasoning for Adaptive Cyber Defense by Sushil Jajodia,George Cybenko,Peng Liu,Cliff Wang,Michael Wellman Pdf

Today’s cyber defenses are largely static allowing adversaries to pre-plan their attacks. In response to this situation, researchers have started to investigate various methods that make networked information systems less homogeneous and less predictable by engineering systems that have homogeneous functionalities but randomized manifestations. The 10 papers included in this State-of-the Art Survey present recent advances made by a large team of researchers working on the same US Department of Defense Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) project during 2013-2019. This project has developed a new class of technologies called Adaptive Cyber Defense (ACD) by building on two active but heretofore separate research areas: Adaptation Techniques (AT) and Adversarial Reasoning (AR). AT methods introduce diversity and uncertainty into networks, applications, and hosts. AR combines machine learning, behavioral science, operations research, control theory, and game theory to address the goal of computing effective strategies in dynamic, adversarial environments.

Trade Liberalisation and Regional Disparity in Pakistan by Muhammad Shoaib Butt,Jayatilleke S. Bandara Pdf

Pakistan’s military, which has directly controlled the country’s affairs for more than half of its post-independence history and which often retained real political power even during periods of democratic rule, has played a significant role in trade liberalisation. Regional disparities have increased since the beginning of major trade liberalisation attempts in the 1980s and at present, regional conflicts and the associated regional disparities are extremely high. The authors critically review the country's post-independence political economy of trade liberalisation, the resulting structural change and the story of regional disparities, identifying possible relations with political regimes. Using a regional computable general equilibrium (CGE) model, the effects of trade liberalisation on regional disparities are quantitatively examined, with an emphasis on the key export industries at a national level and on the relative output and employment growth at a regional level. In the first study to distinguish a possible link between trade liberalisation and regional disparities under dissimilar political regimes, such as autocracy and democracy, Butt and Bandara use Pakistan as a case study to draw broader lessons for other developing countries. This book will be of interest to academics, economists, political analysts and policymakers interested in development economics in general and South Asia in particular.

Control of the Cardiovascular and Respiratory Systems in Health and Disease by C. Tissa Kappagoda,Marc P. Kaufman Pdf

On April 8-9, 1994, a symposium entitled Control of the Cardiovascular and Respiratory Systems in Health and Disease was held at the University of California Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. The purpose of this symposium was to honor the careers of Professors Hazel M. and John C. G. Coleridge. Participants in this symposium came from throughout the world. Their attendance at the symposium was a symbol of great respect and affection for the honorees. The Professors Coleridge have made many important contribu tions to the scientific literature concerning neural control of the cardiovascular and respira tory systems. In addition, they have made remarkable contributions to the lives of other scientists working in this field of investigation. Some of us have known them as mentors, counselors, friends, and supervisors; others have known them as co-investigators. Most importantly, all of us have known them as friends. This book, which contains the proceedings of the symposium, is dedicated to Hazel and John Coleridge. C. T. Kappagoda M. P. Indonesia in the New World by Arianto A. Patunru,Mari Pangestu,M Chatib Basri Pdf

Globalisation is more complex than ever. The effects of the global financial crisis and increased inequality have spurred anti-globalisation sentiment in many countries and encouraged the adoption of populist and inward-looking policies. This has led to some surprising results: Duterte, Brexit and Trump, to name a few. In Indonesia, the disappointment with globalisation has led to rising protectionism, a rejection of foreign interference in the name of nationalism, and economic policies dominated by calls for self-sufficiency. Meanwhile, human trafficking and the abuse of migrant workers show the dark side of globalisation. In this volume, leading experts explore key issues around globalisation, nationalism and sovereignty in Indonesia. Topics include the history of Indonesia’s engagement with the world, Indonesia’s stance on the South China Sea and the re-emergence of nationalism. The book also examines the impact of globalisation on poverty and inequality, labour markets and people, especially women.

Charting a Sustainable Future of ASEAN in Business and Social Sciences by Naginder Kaur,Mahyudin Ahmad Pdf

This volume showcases selected conference papers addressing the sustainable future of ASEAN from the perspectives of business and social science disciplines. In addressing the 17 Sustainable Developments Goals (SDGs) envisioned by the United Nations in the domains of environment, health and well-being, posing potential means of reducing inequalities globally, the authors target specific issues and challenges confronting the fast-growing region of ASEAN and present suggestions for co-operation and commitment from governments, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and society at large, in line with the ASEAN Vision 2020. Papers are selected from the 3rd International Conference on the Future of ASEAN (ICoFA) 2019, organised by Universiti Teknologi MARA in Malaysia, whose conference theme “Charting the Sustainable Future of ASEAN” enables intellectual discourse on sustainability issues from business and the social sciences, as well as science and technology. The selection of papers is published in two volumes, comprising scholarly and practical insights into sustainability in ASEAN. This first volume of papers from business and social science scholars will be of interest to researchers and policymakers interested in sustainability developments in the ASEAN region.

Environmental Economics and Computable General Equilibrium Analysis by John R. Madden,Hiroyuki Shibusawa,Yoshiro Higano Pdf

This book addresses major issues such as a growing world energy demand, environmental degradation due to anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emission, and risk management of disastrous events such as pandemics, abnormal climate, and earthquakes. Using cutting-edge analytical tools, particularly computable general equilibrium (CGE) modelling, the analyses are focused on a very wide range of policy-relevant economic questions for the Asia-Pacific region, especially for Japan, China, India, Vietnam, and smaller nations, including Brunei, Timor Leste, and Fiji. The first part considers (a) the effects of climate change on agriculture sectors, energy policies, and future GHG emission trends, (b) adaptation to climate changes in energy policy and its impacts on the economies, and (c) risk management of catastrophic events such as global pandemics. The second part examines (a) energy environmental issues, (b) economic impacts of natural disaster and depopulation, and (c) effects of informatics development on risk management, using CGE modelling and other methods in regional science fields. Contributors are internationally active leading CGE modellers and environmental economists. The book should be greatly beneficial for scholars and graduate students as well as policy makers who are interested in the economic effects and management of risks relating to climate change and disastrous events.
