ISO Science Legacy by Catherine J. Cesarsky,Catherine Cesarsky,Alberto Salama Pdf

Stars are born and die in clouds of gas and dust, opaque to most types of radiation, but transparent in the infrared. Requiring complex detectors, space missions and cooled telescopes, infrared astronomy is the last branch of this discipline to come of age. After a very successful sky survey performed in the eighties by the IRAS satellite, the Infrared Space Observatory, in the nineties, brought spectacular advances in the understanding of the processes giving rise to powerful infrared emission by a great variety of celestial sources. Outstanding results have been obtained on the bright comet Hale-Bopp, and in particular of its water spectrum, as well as on the formation, chemistry and dynamics of planetary objects in the solar system. Ideas on the early stages of stellar formation and on the stellar initial mass function have been clarified. ISO is the first facility in space able to provide a systematic diagnosis of the physical phenomena and the chemistry in the close environment of pre-main sequence stars, in the interstellar medium, and in the final stages of stellar life, using, among other indicators, molecular hydrogen, ubiquitous crystalline silicates, water and ices. ISO has dramatically increased our ability to investigate the power production, excitation and fuelling mechanism of galaxies of every type, and has discovered a new very cold dust component in galaxies. ISO has demonstrated that luminous infrared galaxies were brighter and much more numerous in the past, and that they played a dominant role in shaping present day galaxies and in producing the cosmic infrared background.

Nature Ethics by Marti Kheel Pdf

In Nature Ethics: An Ecofeminist Perspective, Marti Kheel explores the underlying worldview of nature ethics, offering an alternative ecofeminist perspective. She focuses on four prominent representatives of holist philosophy: two early conservationists (Theodore Roosevelt and Aldo Leopold) and two contemporary philosophers (Holmes Rolston III, and transpersonal ecologist Warwick Fox). Kheel argues that in directing their moral allegiance to abstract constructs (e.g. species, the ecosystem, or the transpersonal Self) these influential nature theorists represent a masculinist orientation that devalues concern for individual animals. Seeking to heal the divisions among the seemingly disparate movements and philosophies of feminism, animal advocacy, environmental ethics, and holistic health, Kheel proposes an ecofeminist philosophy that underscores the importance of empathy and care for individual beings as well as larger wholes.

Treasure by William H. Combs Pdf

Star Trek, 2001 A Space Odyssey, ET and Star Wars are all fictional examples of space exploration and encounters that entertain and stimulate our imagination. The legacy of this genre is further enhanced by the author William Combs. In his story, Treasure: Orion's Legacy, William takes us on a compelling space adventure with the main character Bob Collins. Written in an easy to read style, William's book is full of astrophysics what ifs, techno wonders, and aliens. Imagine if you can, being placed in "Balanced Suspension", a form of long term hibernation where the body neither ages nor dies; using advanced medical science to reduce age by genetic manipulation; and using host DNA to create exact body parts with no rejection. This makes possible the ability to increase life spans, not by years or decades, but by centuries. The use of artificial intelligence, (AI), will manage space travel and perform all manner of functions to meet human needs. BOTS as automated tools can carry out repetitive and mundane tasks. In Williams story, travel in our current dimension is only possible at about 85% light speed. However, with 26 known dimensions, several of these are not subject to the limits of light speed. Thus it becomes possible to travel 40.9 light years, or 245.4 trillion miles in 24 earth hours. Applying advanced manipulation of gravity wells will make "normal" movement sensations possible during extremely fast space travel. With hundreds of known nearby stars similar to our sun, there are several containing habitable planets for dispersing earth's crowded population. All of this scientific wonder is wrapped around a love story with devotion to spouse and family. William Combs imagines a better life for all mankind, not just the privileged few, in our world and worlds to come. The benevolent use of advanced scientific knowledge will reduce ignorance, violence, poverty and suffering for all mankind. Phil Eagon. Friend.

A Lincoln Legacy by David Gardner Chardavoyne,Hugh W. Brenneman, Jr Pdf

A Lincoln Legacy: The History of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan by David Gardner Chardavoyne with Hugh W. Brenneman, Jr. provides the first and only comprehensive examination of the history of the United States federal courts in the Western District of Michigan. The federal courts were established by the U.S. Constitution to adjudicate disputes involving federal laws, disputes between litigants from different states involving state and federal laws, and to punish violations of criminal laws passed by Congress. During the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln signed legislation creating two federal districts in the state of Michigan: the Eastern and Western Districts—the latter of which is headquartered in Grand Rapids and which now encompasses the western half of the Lower Peninsula and all of the Upper Peninsula. With the rapid expansion of legislation passed by Congress, the increasing mobility of society, and the growth of interstate commerce, the federal courts have assumed an important and sometimes dominant role in major litigation today. In A Lincoln Legacy, Chardavoyne tracks the history of these courts over eleven chapters, from their creation by the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 to 2020. He discusses the changes in society that drove the evolving federal litigation and some significant cases heard in the Western District. Additionally, fifteen appendices are included in the book, listing of all the federal circuit and district judges in the Western District; commissioners; magistrate judges and bankruptcy judges; U.S. Attorneys; clerks of the courts; and more. Chardavoyne also identifies auxiliary offices and organizations revolving around the federal court that play a major role in its activities (e.g., the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the Federal Public Defender’s Office, the Federal Bar Association, etc.). A Lincoln Legacy provides a thorough examination of the history of the federal courts of Western Michigan. It will appeal to those learning and practicing law, as well as those with an interest in Michigan history.
