Chemical Safety in the Laboratory by Stephen K. Hall Pdf

Nothing is more important to an organization than the health and safety of its workers. The managerial effectiveness of any health and safety program is judged on the basis of how well it prevents injuries and ill health. Chemical Safety in the Laboratory provides a proven approach to implementing and maintaining an effective chemical safety program for laboratories in hospital, industrial, and educational settings. Based on 20 years of experience managing and auditing chemical safety programs, the author discusses the OSHA Laboratory Standard and the Chemical Hygiene Plan, provides guidelines for the effective use of personal protective equipment, and details chemical emergency planning and response procedures. He also outlines a 19-step decontamination procedure for emergency responders. Employee chemical exposure monitoring and victim handling procedures are among the other major topics covered in this essential guide.

Resources and References by Donna S. Kocurek,Bayle Woodside Pdf

This guide book provides references and resources for the complex field of hazardous waste and hazardous materials management. The book is divided into general topics such as air quality, industrial wastewater, pollution prevention, and risk assessment under hazardous waste management and chemical hazards, emergency planning, and hazard communication under hazardous materials management. Each individual section includes a list of annotated bibliographies of the most recent books by major publishers as well as established, standard references. Following the annotated titles, are additional references of books and documents by publishers, technical associations, and governmental agencies (primarily the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency). In general, only references from 1986 onward are included since the technology and regulations affecting hazardous waste and materials are constantly evolving. Additional resources included in the book are video tapes for training and instruction, information services and databases, libraries, agency contacts, technical journals, and a list of publishers and ordering information. This book will be a useful reference to professionals in the environmental field who need an extensive, but concise source of technical information and contacts. The book will be a valuable addition to individual libraries and will fill a current reference void in university libraries, and technical libraries in industry and government. At present there are very few technical bibliographies in the field, and none has covered topics related to hazardous materials and hazardous waste as extensively as this book.

Laboratory Safety Guidance by U.S. Department of Labor,Occupational Safety and Health Administration Pdf

More than 500,000 workers are employed in laboratories in the U.S. The laboratory environment can be a hazardous place to work. Laboratory workers are exposed to numerous potential hazards including chemical, biological, physical and radioactive hazards, as well as musculoskeletal stresses. Laboratory safety is governed by numerous local, state and federal regulations. Over the years, OSHA has promulgated rules and published guidance to make laboratories increasingly safe for personnel. This publication is intended for supervisors, principal investigators and managers who have the primary responsibility for maintaining laboratories under their supervision as safe, healthy places to work and for ensuring that applicable health, safety and environmental regulations are followed. There are several primary OSHA standards that apply to laboratories and these are discussed below. There are also other OSHA standards that apply to various aspects of laboratory activities and these are referred to in this publication. The Occupational Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories standard (29 CFR 1910.1450) was created specifically for non-production laboratories. Additional OSHA standards provide rules that protect workers, including those that who in laboratories, from chemical hazards as well as biological, physical and safety hazards. Safe Work Practices for the Environmental Laboratory by Frank R. Spellman Pdf

Make your environmental lab--and lab technicians' work practices--the safest possible. * Protect workers from hazardous material they handle on-site * Protect the civilian population from harm in a hazardous materials emergency * Prevent accidents before they happen The purpose of Safe Work Practices for the Environmental Laboratory is twofold: 1. For the person designated as the laboratory's Chemical Hygiene Officer or Safety Officer, this text is a user friendly reference that will provide a format, a template, a guide to compliance with OSHA's Laboratory Standard (29 CFR 1910.145); and 2. for the person who is assigned to work in the environmental laboratory, this user-friendly text provides the information needed not only to perform routine laboratory tasks correctly, but also to perform them safely. The environmental lab is involved with performing analytical testing and sampling protocols relating to air, soil, biosolids, sludges, drinking water, wastewater, groundwater, stormwater, waste characterization, petroleum products, and HRSD/NPDES effluent studies. Many wastewater treatment plants and water works have their own environmental laboratories. These labs primarily perform analysis of process conditions to ensure optimization of the process. However, even these small labs (a few are quite large) perform "environmental sampling" and therefore are environmental labs. The actual genesis of the environmental laboratory can be attributed to the environmental regulations that have been generated by USEPA, AOAC, ASTM, NIOSH, OSHA, and other regulatory and advisory entities. The typical environmental laboratory contains several different types of hazards the lab worker must guard against. This is the case even though modern environmental laboratories have been designed to take maximum advantage of engineering controls that work to "engineer-out" most hazards. The main hazard discussed in this text has to do with hazardous materials--dangerous chemicals and compounds--and the effect they can have on work practices. OSHA is quite specific in regard to protecting the laboratory worker from harm that could result from handling hazardous materials--these specifics are discussed in detail throughout this text. It is important to point out that this text will provide the user with more than just a "safety book." For example, this text provides the user with a sample Chemical Hygiene Plan, it discusses various safe work practices for standard operating procedures normally performed in the environmental laboratory, and it discusses procedures to use for emergency response activities, such as clean-up of chemical spills. The bottom line is that probably the most important benefit to be derived from using this text is the exposure the user receives to the lessons and examples presented throughout the text; these lessons learned and examples provide information on how to make your environmental laboratory and the performance of your individual work practices safer. When you get right down to it, isn't this what a safety text should be all about?
