Death and Dying in Contemporary Japan by Hikaru Suzuki Pdf

This book, based on extensive original research, explores the various ways in which Japanese people think about death and how they approach the process of dying and death. It shows how new forms of funeral ceremonies have been developed by the funeral industry, how traditional grave burial is being replaced in some cases by the scattering of ashes and forest mortuary ritual, and how Japanese thinking on relationships, the value of life, and the afterlife are changing. Throughout, it assesses how these changes reflect changing social structures and social values.

Envisaging Death by Michele Aaron Pdf

Envisaging Death: Visual Culture and Dying enters the expanding field of Death Studies and connects some of its key interpretive frameworks – such as issues of internment practice, trauma, or end of life care – to visual culture, and, more than that, to visual culture’s socio-political, geographic and aesthetic specificities. Where the prevailing picture of death within this field is as a Western experience framed by its denial on one side and its sensationalism on the other, this collection confronts the specifics of death’s marginalisation: its experience as local rather than universal, and the precise relationship between the context and the cultural mediation of death. Who and where you are – which part of the world you live in, whether you are famous or wealthy, subject to “natural” catastrophe, civil unrest or high-tech healthcare – has enormous influence on how your death is marked, imaged and imagined. As such, this book addresses the socio-cultural factors permeating and styling the visual and inevitably material treatment of death and dying in a broad array of personal and national settings. “Advanced” society has been characterised by an increased distancing of death from the everyday, and its distortion or invisibility within the public sphere. The essays collected here return some shape and context, and geo-politics, to the treatment of death and dying within contemporary culture, and specifically within contemporary visual culture which provides an ever more dominating forum for society’s depiction of and dealings with death. Charting important new interdisciplinary terrain, scholars and practitioners from a wide range of fields address an assortment of cultural mediations of real, fictional or fictionalised death. They navigate, in different ways, the fraught, policed, but always relative, distance between the living and the dead which characterises these mediations, a distance which works, inevitably, to reassure and re-secure those supposedly untouched by death and dying. Envisaging Death, whether through discussion of the cemetery landscape, the still or moving image, the therapeutic or educational art practice, addresses how such a distance is reinforced. It also, crucially, explores countless cases of, and increasing possibilities for, the disruption of this distance. With the various crises of current times, be they economic, environmental or regional, such possibilities for this disruption, and the altered dynamics of human connection that they represent, can only gain in significance.

Osutaka: A Chronicle of Loss In the World's Largest Single Plane Crash by Christopher Hood Pdf

The loss of a loved one is a traumatic event. If the loved one is your child, the emotions are further tested. Imagine having to cope with all of these feelings when also adding into the mix the challenges when the death happens on the other side of the planet in a country with a different language and culture. This is what one man had to face when his son died in the world's largest single plane crash. Peter Mathews lost his son Kimble, who was travelling with his fiancée Masako Nishiguchi, in the flight JL123 crash on 12 August 1985. From the time of the first phone call through his trip to Japan until his return back to the UK, Peter kept a diary and took photographs. Using these materials as a basis, this book provides an amazing insight into the events of August 1985. The book also includes details of the experiences and lessons learned by the JAL employee, Keith Haines, who was assigned to accompany the Mathews family to Japan. Their story is as relevant today as it was in 1985.

Serious Accidents and Human Factors by Masako Miyagi Pdf

There is growing concern globally over issues of aviation safety. Awareness of previous failures and their causes is one of the most important factors in determining risks and hazards in any new operational systems. This requires experience of accidents and failures across a broad spectrum of complex systems. Every accident occurs as a result of a chain of errors, and if one of the ""links"" making up that chain can be broken, the accident might be prevented - and becomes merely an ""incident."" If you collect detailed data from a range of ""incidents,"" relating to how they occurred, and develop a consistent method for analyzing that data, you can create a potentially valuable resource to assist in accident prevention. Serious Accidents and Human Factors proposes an original and structured approach to accident prevention. In an interesting and readable collection of accounts of major accidents, drawn mainly from the aviation industry, Masako Miyagi investigates incident reports analytically and reveals the critical information hidden therein that could avert a full-blown accident or disaster. She applies an innovative analytical technique - multidimensional analysis of incident reports (MAIR), using Quantification Method III to validate the results and focus upon individual components identified within the causal chain of events that precede an accident. She advocates wider acceptance and use of the Incident Report Analysing System, ideally administered by a neutral and independent body, to help prevent accidents not only in aviation but in relation to all complex systems, such as nuclear power plants. Serious Accidents and Human Factors offers aviation industry personnel, as well as those involved more generally with safety, risk assessment, and accident prevention in other industries, a comprehensive understanding of the accident causation chain, events contributing to that chain, and a method for identifying and eliminating causal factors in a pro-active way. Managing the Risks of Organizational Accidents by James Reason Pdf

Major accidents are rare events due to the many barriers, safeguards and defences developed by modern technologies. But they continue to happen with saddening regularity and their human and financial consequences are all too often unacceptably catastrophic. One of the greatest challenges we face is to develop more effective ways of both understanding and limiting their occurrence. This lucid book presents a set of common principles to further our knowledge of the causes of major accidents in a wide variety of high-technology systems. It also describes tools and techniques for managing the risks of such organizational accidents that go beyond those currently available to system managers and safety professionals. James Reason deals comprehensively with the prevention of major accidents arising from human and organizational causes. He argues that the same general principles and management techniques are appropriate for many different domains. These include banks and insurance companies just as much as nuclear power plants, oil exploration and production companies, chemical process installations and air, sea and rail transport. Its unique combination of principles and practicalities make this seminal book essential reading for all whose daily business is to manage, audit and regulate hazardous technologies of all kinds. It is relevant to those concerned with understanding and controlling human and organizational factors and will also interest academic readers and those working in industrial and government agencies.

Do You Know What Is Energy? by Koji Goto Pdf

Energy is an old and new theme for mankind. If we could get it freely, what would happen? For instance, gravity is a kind of energy which wont dry up forever. Then isnt it possible to utilize it for our life? On the other hand, there is anomalous natural power that we cannot control even by advanced technology. Hurricane, tornado, earthquake, eruption, tsunamiall these are caused by uncanny energy. Cant we dodge them by any means? Before finding the way to cope them, we have to know the true substance of the energy. I would like to ask what is the real entity of it. I think there must be some vault where the key to solve the secret is deposited. In this way, I have come up with a strongbox named mysterythe mystery of the traffic accidents in the air and the sea. It took many years for me to open the heavy doors of the strongbox. Im going to rummage the contents of it here. Therefore, this story is semi-documentary science fiction. I think the ninety percent of it is true. Then what part is the fiction? I would like to leave it to the readers judgment

Worst Plane Crashes In History by Jack Lewis Pdf

According to the CVR, the Pan Am pilot said, "There he is!" when he spotted the KLM's landing lights through the fog just as his plane approached exit C-4. When it became clear that the KLM was approaching at takeoff speed, Grubbs exclaimed, "Goddamn, that son-of-a-bitch is coming straight at us!" while the co-pilot Robert Bragg yelled, "Get off! Get off! Get off!". The Pan Am crew applied full power to the throttles and took a sharp left turn towards the grass in an attempt to avoid a collision. By the time the KLM pilots saw the Pan Am, they were already traveling too fast to stop. The KLM was within 100 m (330 ft) of the Pan Am when it left the ground. Its nose gear cleared the Pan Am, but the engines, lower fuselage and main landing gear struck the upper right side of the Pan Am's fuselage at approximately 140 knots (260 km/h; 160 mph), ripping apart the center of the Pan Am jet almost directly above the wing. The right side engines crashed through the Pan Am's upper deck immediately behind the cockpit... Keywords: plane, airplane, airline, crash, disaster, accident, tragedy
