Our Damn County! by Shawn Silvern Pdf

Our Damn County North Georgia's mountain areas are breathtakingly beautiful and so exhilarating With all the charm and appeal anyone would hope to find, it is not surprising that the area attracts so many newcomers. They seek tranquility and quiet, country living. They come to put down new roots, or perhaps, to find that vacation getaway that takes them from urban sprawl to God's green country. Vast valleys are bathed with colorful foliage, lining the landscape as far as the eye can see. "It's almost like heaven on earth," some were heard to say. One could almost get high from that fresh, clear, sky-high mountain air These mountain ranges have remained virtually unchanged for hundreds of years. Many jugs of moonshine have been hauled away, bringing great financial gain to some, while fulfilling that demand for homegrown 'mountain-dew'. Yes, the men loved their brew, and the cookers capitalized in this 'win-win' situation. Fear of law enforcement intervention was minimal, at best, because this is 'our damn county ' 'We do as we please.' 'We are entitled'. 'We own this county' Years rolled by and times changed, but people still wanted that home-grown stuff. Home brew and 'mary-jane' were the big money makers. Demand plus supply means the money keeps rolling in. Lawmen, judges, lawyers and doctors, in fact, anyone with money could invest and get richer Many did just that. Turfs were claimed by smaller groups, but the 'big-boys' kept the cream of the crop to themselves. Protected all the way around, 'this is our damn county'. What would happen if anyone interfered or was perceived to be a threat to this lucrative empire? How would they be dealt with? What if newcomers innocently moved in and found themselves inadvertently at odds with the 'power machine'? Who would defend the little man? Where would he turn for help? Certainly not to law enforcement, as that could be a huge mistake. WHERE would the little man turn? Was any help available to him? What if one of the local citizens decided to speak out against such lawlessness? What could he expect, in return for his respect for law and order? Would he be protected, or would he be left to the mercy, (or lack thereof), of the cartel clique? Some found out the hard way. Follow this amazing story of one woman's eye opening experiences as she found herself on the wrong side of the cartel. Becoming an adversary, simply because she was a friend to a victim, Brenda Brahm learned a few lessons about what happens to those who are perceived as being dangerous to the 'bigboys'. Yes, indeed, the Georgia mountains can be hazardous to your health.

The Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy Pdf

In his most brilliant and powerful novel, Pat Conroy tells the story of Tom Wingo, his twin sister, Savannah, and the dark and violent past of the family into which they were born. Set in New York City and the lowcountry of South Carolina, the novel opens when Tom, a high school football coach whose marriage and career are crumbling, flies from South Carolina to New York after learning of his twin sister's suicide attempt. Savannah is one of the most gifted poets of her generation, and both the cadenced beauty of her art and the jumbled cries of her illness are clues to the too-long-hidden story of her wounded family. In the paneled offices and luxurious restaurants of New York City, Tom and Susan Lowenstein, Savannah's psychiatrist, unravel a history of violence, abandonment, commitment, and love. And Tom realizes that trying to save his sister is perhaps his last chance to save himself. With passion and a rare gift of language, the author moves from present to past, tracing the amazing history of the Wingos from World War II through the final days of the war in Vietnam and into the 1980s, drawing a rich range of characters: the lovable, crazy Mr. Fruit, who for decades has wordlessly directed traffic at the same intersection in the southern town of Colleton; Reese Newbury, the ruthless, patrician land speculator who threatens the Wingos' only secure worldly possession, Melrose Island; Herbert Woodruff, Susan Lowenstein's husband, a world-famous violinist; Tolitha Wingo, Savannah's mentor and eccentric grandmother, the first real feminist in the Wingo family. Pat Conroy reveals the lives of his characters with surpassing depth and power, capturing the vanishing beauty of the South Carolina lowcountry and a lost way of life. His lyric gifts, abundant good humor, and compelling storytelling are well known to readers of The Great Santini and The Lords of Discipline. The Prince of Tides continues that tradition yet displays a new, mature voice of Pat Conroy, signaling this work as his greatest accomplishment.

The Seasons by Jo Sinclair Pdf

As a novelist concerned with issues of gender, social class, and ethnicity, Jo Sinclair has won coveted literary prizes and a devoted following. Now in this extraordinary memoir, she relates a tale as fascinating, and as moving, as any work of fiction. At the center of Sinclair's story is her relationship with Helen Buchman, a middle-class wife and mother with a passion for literature and gardening. The two women couldn't have been more different: Buchman, despite suffering from diabetes, was self-assured, cultured, stable. Sinclair, on the other hand, was a product of the Jewish ghetto, carrying a host of emotional and spiritual scars. Nevertheless, when Buchman invited the young woman into her home in the 1940s, the two developed an intense relationship. Buchman became both best friend and mentor, encouraging Sinclair's writing and passing along a sense of the spiritual nature of gardening. The book deals not only with these early formative years but also with Sinclair's struggle to accept her friend's death in 1963, her triumph over alcoholism, and her ultimate transfiguration as an accomplished author.

Tank by Laramie Briscoe Pdf

From USA Today and Wall Street Journal Bestselling author, Laramie Briscoe, comes the special edition of a fan favorite series. Nobody writes blue collar romance like Laramie Briscoe, and nowhere is it more apparent than in the Moonshine Task Force: Special Edition Series. This edition includes a never-before-released short story, as well as all the slices of life scenes and text messages I've written for this couple. Life isn’t promised, love isn’t easy, and relationships aren’t always clean, but everyone has their soulmate who is willing to forgive when it would be better to forget. Trevor “Tank” Trumbolt I never thought in the blink of an eye my life could change, but it did. Cresting a hill driving to my favorite fishing spot, I was hit head-on by a teenager with no regard for anyone’s life but his own. The recovery process has been hard, painful, and damn near beating me down. The bright spot? Blaze. Surviving the wreck has given me a second chance to make a life with her. Not knowing if I’ll ever be able to rejoin the Moonshine Task Force again has brought my world into focus. It’s made me realize what’s important. Blaze. Stella. My brothers. My sister. The ego that ran Blaze away before isn’t here any longer. What’s left is a man who’s holding his heart in his hands and a burning hope that once I’m healed she’ll still be around. Daphne “Blaze” Coleman There’s only been one person in the world who’s accepted me for who I am - from the fiery red of my hair and vibrant tattoos covering parts of my body to the smartness of my mouth and my desire to be matched in the bedroom. That man is Trevor Trumbolt. When he asked me to give up my job as an EMT because he saw the dangers I face one scary afternoon, it spelled the end for us. Now that he’s been injured, he needs my help and my love. I’ll give it all freely, but in the end I’m gonna need him to understand one thing about relationships. The give and take, love and sadness, pleasure and pain is a two-way street. He’s either in this with me or he’s not, but at the end of the day, I won’t let him boss me around. If there’s anything that can handle the steel of a tank – it’s the heat of a blaze.
