Beyond Our Wildest Dreams by Ineke van Kessel Pdf

The 1980s in South Africa were marked by protest, violent confrontation, and international sanctions. Internally, the country saw a bewildering growth of grassroots organizations--including trade unions, civic associations in the black townships, student and other youth organizations, church-based groups, and women's movements--many of which operated under the umbrella of the United Democratic Front (UDF). "Beyond Our Wildest Dreams" explores the often conflicted relationship between the UDF's large-scale resistance to apartheid and its everyday struggles at the local level. In hindsight, the UDF can be seen as a transitional front, preparing the ground for leaders of the liberation movement to return from exile or prison and take over power. But the founding fathers of the UDF initially had far more modest ambitions. Interviews with Cachalia and other leading personalities in the UDF examine the organization's workings at the national level, while stories of ordinary people, collected by the author, illuminate the grassroots activism so important to the UDF's success. Even in South Africa, writes Ineke van Kessel, who covered the anti-apartheid movement as a journalist, resistance was not the obvious option for ordinary citizens. Van Kessel shows how these people were mobilized into forming a radical social movement that developed a highly flexible and innovative form of resistance that ultimately ended apartheid. --From publisher's description.

Never in My Wildest Dreams by Belva Davis,Vicki Haddock Pdf

The pioneering TV news journalist shares her extraordinary story in this acclaimed memoir: “A very important book” (Dr. Maya Angelou). As the first black female television journalist in the western United States, Belva Davis overcame the obstacles of racism and sexism, and helped change the face and focus of television news over the course of five decades. Born in the Great Depression to a fifteen-year-old Louisiana laundress, and raised in the projects of Oakland, California, Davis persevered to achieve a career beyond her imagination. Davis has seen profound changes in America, from being verbally and physically attacked while reporting on the 1964 Republican National Convention in San Francisco to witnessing the historic election of Barack Obama in 2008. She reported on some of the most explosive stories in modern American history, including the Vietnam War protests, the rise and fall of the Black Panthers, the mass suicides at Jonestown, the onset of the AIDS epidemic, and many others. She encountered everyone from Malcolm X to Frank Sinatra, James Brown, Ronald Reagan, Huey Newton, Muhammad Ali, Fidel Castro, Condoleezza Rice, and more. Davis spent her career on the frontlines of the battle for racial equality, bringing stories of black Americans into the light of day. Still active in her seventies, Davis hosted a news roundtable at one of the nation’s leading PBS stations. In this way she remained engaged in contemporary journalism, while offering her unique perspective on the decades that have shaped us.

As the first black female television journalist in the western United States, Belva Davis overcame the obstacles of racism and sexism, and helped change the face and focus of television news. Now she is sharing the story of her extraordinary life in her poignantly honest memoir, Never in My Wildest Dreams. A reporter for almost five decades, Davis is no stranger to adversity. Born to a fifteen - year - old Louisiana laundress during the Great Depression, and raised in the overcrowded projects of Oakland, California, Davis suffered abuse, battled rejection, and persevered to achieve a career beyond her imagination. Davis has seen the world change in ways she never could have envisioned, from being verbally and physically attacked while reporting on the 1964 Republican National Convention in San Francisco to witnessing the historic election of Barack Obama in 2008. Davis worked her way up to reporting on many of the most explosive stories of recent times, including the Vietnam War protests, the rise and fall of the Black Panthers, the Peoples Temple cult mass suicides at Jonestown, the assassinations of San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk, the onset of the AIDS epidemic, and the aftermath of the terrorist attacks that first put Osama bin Laden on the FBI's Most Wanted List. She encountered a cavalcade of cultural icons: Malcolm X, Frank Sinatra, James Brown, Ronald Reagan, Huey Newton, Muhammad Ali, Alex Haley, Fidel Castro, Dianne Feinstein, Condoleezza Rice, and others. Throughout her career Davis soldiered in the trenches in the battle for racial equality and brought stories of black Americans out of the shadows and into the light of day. Still active in her seventies, Davis, the ''Walter Cronkite of the Bay Area,'' now hosts a weekly news roundtable and special reports at KQED, one of the nation's leading PBS stations,. In this way she has remained relevant and engaged in the stories of today, while offering her anecdote - rich perspective on the decades that have shaped us. ''No people can say they understand the times in which they have lived unless they have read this book.'' - Dr. Maya Angelou

Seeking to find peace of heart and mind and a sense of purpose the author is led to Medjugorje in Bosnia - Herzegovina because of the reported apparitions of the "Blessed Virgin Mary". His love for "Our Lady" has him embarking on a humanitarian pilgrimage to war torn Bosnia, not only to help those in need, but also to find himself. What he acquires on that trip is a tremendous longing to continue helping until the war is over. Without the financial resources to make more than one more trip he prays to the "Blessed Virgin" for her help and intercession. The result is how God answers prayers and brings people together to accomplish good things. Having volunteered on his first trip to accompany a doctor and his wife and another pilgrim into Mostar (which was being shelled daily by artillery) to deliver medicine, has the four pilgrims discovering that God has bound their lives in a unique way through "the Mother of Jesus". It is from this connection that the author's prayers are answered and the journey begins.

In this memoir, the author sets out on a fascinating journey that takes him back to the simple, rural settings of the tiny island of Barbados where he grew up. The narrative transitions to inner city Brooklyn, during the turbulent 1960s when the civil rights movement was seeking to dismantle the ugly practices of racism in the U.S. The author credits his Barbadian upbringing with his successes in athletics and academics. He provides a unique perspective on what it was like to be one of only a handful of black biochemists conducting discovery research in the pharmaceutical industry during the last three decades of the twentieth century.

Permission to Prosper by Ray Edwards Pdf

False beliefs about money so often rob us of our best opportunity to serve God, to love people, and to steward the wealth He gives us. Our cultural programming has embedded deep within us wrong ideas about wealth, money, and morality. These wrong ideas, and not greed or avarice, are the biggest source of poverty in the world. In Permission to Prosper, Ray Edwards offers three startling premises. First, God has promised you prosperity. Second, God has a purpose behind this prosperity (and it is not necessarily that you give all your money away). And third, the practice of prosperity is a spiritual activity. Not only do you have permission to prosper, but you also have a mandate to multiply. Permission to Prosper gives you the confidence and the keys to do just that.
