Outdoor Pastimes of an American Hunter (Classic Reprint) by Theodore Roosevelt Pdf

Excerpt from Outdoor Pastimes of an American Hunter While a man is known by the friends he has, he is judged by the friend he is, and it is during the hours of his relaxations, and the periods of vacation from his routine work, that a man's personality is seen and judged by his friends. His public acts, if he be in public Office, are readily understood by them as the logical consequence of the characteristics they have learned to know, and have seen expressed in his hours of relaxation. By the great mass of the people of the United States Theodore Roosevelt was judged only by his public life, and the expression of his personality was seen through his fulfilment of public office. Fortunately for the traditions concerning him, soon after his death the book, Theodore Roosevelt's Let ters to His Children appeared, which moulded those traditions nearer reality than they ever otherwise would have been, for the majority Of men who had judged him by his public career alone, saw then in these letters the real personality with all the charm of its human quali ties. It would seem in the introduction to one of the books, which contains the records of trips taken by him for re laxation, or his short essays describing his observations and his thoughts at these times, that it would be most fitting to consider Theodore Roosevelt as a companion. John Burroughs and the Place of Nature by James Perrin Warren Pdf

This study situates John Burroughs, together with John Muir and Theodore Roosevelt, as one of a trinity of thinkers who, between the Civil War and World War I, defined and secured a place for nature in mainstream American culture. Though not as well known today, Burroughs was the most popular American nature writer of his time. Prolific and consistent, he published scores of essays in influential large-circulation magazines and was often compared to Thoreau. Unlike Thoreau, however, whose reputation grew posthumously, Burroughs wasa celebrity during his lifetime: he wrote more than thirty books, enjoyed a continual high level of visibility, and saw his work taught widely in public schools. James Perrin Warren shows how Burroughs helped guide urban and suburban middle-class readers “back to nature” during a time of intense industrialization and urbanization. Warren discusses Burroughs’s connections not only to Muir and Roosevelt but also to his forebears Emerson, Thoreau, and Whitman. By tracing the complex philosophical, creative, and temperamental lineage of these six giants, Warren shows how, in their friendships and rivalries, Burroughs, Muir, and Roosevelt made the high literary romanticism of Emerson, Thoreau, and Whitman relevant to late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century Americans. At the same time, Warren offers insights into the rise of the nature essay as a genre, the role of popular magazines as shapers and conveyors of public values, and the dynamism of place in terms of such opposed concepts as retreat and engagement, nature and culture, and wilderness and civilization. Because Warren draws on Burroughs’s personal, critical, and philosophical writings as well as his better-known narrative essays, readers will come away with a more informed sense of Burroughs as a literary naturalist and a major early practitioner of ecocriticism. John Burroughs and the Place of Nature helps extend the map of America’s cultural landscape during the period 1870-1920 by recovering an unfairly neglected practitioner of one of his era’s most effective forces for change: nature writing.

Chronicles of Colorado by Frederick R. Rinehart Pdf

Over the years, Colorado has attracted its share of literary vagabonds, but none have described the state in such eloquent prose as those who visited the area during its early years. Included in this volume are the impressions of eleven legendary writers, from the hilarious diatribe of a young Rudyard Kipling to the extensive narrative of a mature Walt Whitman. Whether with Horace Greeley in the new-born city of Denver, touring William Palmer's Glen Eyrie with English women's rights advocate Emily Faithfull, or on the trail with Zane Grey outside of Meeker, these essays provide a first-hand look at Colorado as it progressed from a disputed Mexican province to a state on the verge of opening its wilderness for discovery by an eager American public.

Cultural Values in the Southern Sporting Narrative by Jacob F. Rivers Pdf

This work covers classic southern fiction - along with lesser-known works - with an eye to the ways that southern writers such as William Elliot, William Gilmore Simms, and William Faulkner depict hunting and outdoorsmanship. It explores the themes of honour, fair play, and noblesse oblige.
