The Tiger Killers is the second volume of a new translation of the Chinese classical novel generally known as The Water Margin. Like the first volume, The Broken Seals, it follows the fortunes of various outlaw heroes as they move through a world of treacherous officials, jealous toadies, bullying gaolers, hired assassins, foolhardy generals and cannibalistic innkeepers. This volume contains some of the most famous scenes in the novel, starting with the episode in which Wu Song gets drunk at the tavern, ascends the pass in late evening and kills a notorious man-eating tiger with his bare hands. His subsequent encounter with his midget brother's flirtatious wife, Jinlian or Golden Lotus, and her vain attempt to seduce him lead into a tale of adultery, callous murder and bloody vengeance. The second half of the book is concerned with Song Jiang's attempts to serve out his prison sentence honourably and avoid becoming an outlaw, until he is unjustly condemned to death for a misconstrued poem. Towards the end of this volume we meet the violent Li Kui, variously known as Iron Ox or Black Whirlwind, who also turns out to have a way with tigers. This volume consists of chapters 23 to 43 of the full 120-chapter version of the novel by Shi Nai'an and Luo Guanzhong. It is the first English translation based on this version.

Twelve-year-old Ben Tanner has a problem. Outlaws raided his family stable in Momence, Illinois, and stole four horses. He and his friend Eli have been trying to run Tanner Stables for several years after Ben's father died in 1864 in the Civil War. They have been barely hanging on since most folks didn't have too much confidence in a couple of boys although Eli, who is fourteen, did a fine job shoeing their horses. The outlaws rode east towards the Grand Kankakee Marsh and across the state line into Indiana. It got its name from the counterfeiters and horse thieves that had made it into a fortress that no sane lawman would attempt to breach. It is located in the middle of a large lake where lookouts posted on a high ridge could spot a posse coming from any direction. Feeling desperate, Ben and Eli come up with a plan of action. They will go to Bogus Island, and, under the cover of darkness, take the horses back. Borrowing their friend Libby's canoe, they bravely set off down the Kankakee River while she yells at them that they are going to be killed. The rumor is the horses were stolen by the infamous cutthroat Mike Shafer who rules the outlaw country.

The novel Water Margin (Shuihu zhuan), China's earliest full-length narrative in vernacular prose, first appeared in print in the sixteenth century. The tale of one hundred and eight bandit heroes evolved from a long oral tradition; in its novelized form, it played a pivotal role in the rise of Chinese vernacular fiction, which flourished during the late Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) periods. Liangyan Ge's multidimensional study considers the evolution of Water Margin and the rise of vernacular fiction against the background of the vernacularization of premodern Chinese literature as a whole. This gradual and arduous process, as the book convincingly shows, was driven by sustained contact and interaction between written culture and popular orality. Ge examines the stylistic and linguistic features of the novel against those of other works of early Chinese vernacular literature (stories, in particular), revealing an accretion of features typical of different historical periods and a prolonged and cumulative process of textualization. In addition to providing a meticulous philological study, his work offers a new reading of the novel that interprets some of its salient characteristics in terms of the interplay between audience, storytellers, and men of letters associated with popular orality.
