Outline for a Comparative Grammar of Some Algonquian Languages by Joshua Jacob Snider,Christian Cornelius Uhlenbeck Pdf

[See http: //mundartpress.wordpress.com/2013/10/02/outline-for-a-comparativ/ to print a double sided insert additions page] This is a translation of a comparative grammar of five Algonquian Native American languages first published in Dutch in 1910. Although too short to represent a comprehensive grammar of these languages, it treats most parts of speech and is a good solid introduction to many of the major important morphological features of this family and the languages treated. It has been expanded, corrected and improved in the form of translators notes based on much more recent and complete material. It also includes many bibliographical resources for most of the Algonquian language family, which are geared towards comparative language learning methods. The two most widely spoken languages of this group, Ojibway (frequently spelled Chippewa, Ojibwa or Ojibwe) and Cree, are both examples of the close knit Central Algonquian group, while Micmac (also spelled Mi'kmaq and Mi'gmaw) and the extinct Natick belong to the Eastern group. The western Blackfoot is usually placed with the Plains Algonquian group, but it is the most divergent member of the entire family and has roughly as many speakers as Micmac

A History of the Study of the Indigenous Languages of North America by Marcin Kilarski Pdf

The languages indigenous to North America are characterized by a remarkable genetic and typological diversity. Based on the premise that linguistic examples play a key role in the origin and transmission of ideas within linguistics and across disciplines, this book examines the history of approaches to these languages through the lens of some of their most prominent properties. These properties include consonant inventories and the near absence of labials in Iroquoian languages, gender in Algonquian languages, verbs for washing in the Iroquoian language Cherokee and terms for snow and related phenomena in Eskimo-Aleut languages. By tracing the interpretations of the four examples by European and American scholars, the author illustrates their role in both lay and professional contexts as a window onto unfamiliar languages and cultures, thus allowing a more holistic view of the history of language study in North America.

Proto-Algonquian Dictionary: A Historical and Comparative Dictionary of the Algonquian Languages by David H. Pentland Pdf

"In preparation for half a century, the Pentland Dictionary marks a milestone in the scientific study of one of the major language families of North America; Algonquian languages range from Powhatan or Delaware in the east to Arapaho, Blackfoot and Cheyenne in the West and including such major Canadian languages as Cree and Ojibwe. David Pentland, who died in 2022 before his magnum opus could be brought into print. In a life-long research program of admirable intellectual coherence, Pentland not only drew on the structural and geographic diversity of these languages and their remarkable time-depth and historical documentation but also made exemplary use of the analytic tools of synchronic linguistics, comparative reconstruction and ethnology. A towering figure in the field of Algonquian Studies, he was amongst a small number of experts equally at home in the analysis of the languages still spoken today and the rich documentary record that has been preserved in the archives over the past four centures. The more than 45,000 entries reconstructed for the postulated Proto-Algonquian, the ancestral language from which all the modern languages are descended, are supported by the earliest documentary records for the various Algonquian languages. In addition, this publication also includes an English index, constructed under the general direction of Will Oxford by Laurel-Anne Hasler, one of the most accomplished and experienced scholars in this field. The comparative and historical dictionary of the Algonquian languages is a monu-mental achievement unmatched for any other language family of the New World."--

Semitic Languages by Edward Lipiński Pdf

The first comparative grammar of the Semitic languages, by H. Zimmern, was published a hundred years ago and the last original work of this kind was issued in Russian in 1972 by B.M. Grande. The present grammar, designed to come out in the centenary of the completion of Zimmern's work, fills thus a gap. Besides, it is based on both classical and modern Semitic languages, it takes new material of these last decades into account, and situates the Semitic languages in the wider context of Afro-Asiatic. The introduction briefly presents the languages in question. The main parts of the work are devoted to phonology, morphology, and syntax, with elaborate charts and diagrams. Then follows a discussion of fundamental questions related to lexicographical analysis. The study is supplemented by a glossary of linguistic terms used in Semitics, by a selective bibliography, by a general index, and by an index of words and forms. The book is the result of twenty-five years of research and teaching in comparative Semitic grammar.
