During the earlier years of my life with the Zuñi Indians of western-central New Mexico, from the autumn of 1879 to the winter of 1881-before access to their country had been rendered easy by the completion of the Atlantic and Pacific railroad, -they remained, as regards their social and religious institutions and customs and their modes of thought, if not of daily life, the most archaic of the Pueblo or Aridian peoples. They still continue to be, as they have for centuries been, the most highly developed, yet characteristic and representative of all these people. In fact, it is principally due to this higher development by the Zuñi, than by any of the other Pueblos, of the mytho-sociologic system distinctive in some measure of them all at the time of the Spanish conquest of the southwest, that they have maintained so long and so much more completely than any of the others the primitive characteristics of the Aridian phase of culture; this despite the fact that, being the descendants of the original dwellers in the famous "Seven Cities of Cibola," they were the earliest known of all the tribes within the territory of the United States.

Smoothing the Ground by Brian Swann Pdf

A compilation of essays and translations in which leading scholars in the fields of linguistics, folklore, ethnopoetics and literary criticism discuss the continuing American Indian oral tradition as literature. Native Americans invested the spoken word with reverence and power, and the oral literature that resulted from the fusing of language and event into vital force is extraordinarily rich and potent. Authors such as Dell Hymes, Karl Kroeber, Dennis Tedlock, Jarold Ramsey and John Bierhorst address the many aspects of the study of this literature, from the problem of translation and of the role of the literary critic to the interpretation of specific stories. ISBN 0-520-04902-0 : $12.95.

Mother Earth by Sam D. Gill Pdf

Attributed to Tecumseh in the early 1800s, this statement is frequently cited to uphold the view, long and widely proclaimed in scholarly and popular literature, that Mother Earth is an ancient and central Native American Figure. In this radical and comprehensive rethinking, Sam D. Gill traces the evolution of female earth imagery in North America from the sixteenth century to the present and reveals how the evolution of the current Mother Earth figure was influenced by prevailing European-American imagery of Americaand the Indians as well as by the rapidly changing Indian identity.

Zuni Fetiches (Illustrated Edition) (Dodo Press) by Frank Hamilton Cushing Pdf

Frank Hamilton Cushing (1857-1900) was born in Northeastern Pennsylvania, later moving with his family to western New York. He published his first scientific paper when he was only 17. After a brief period at Cornell University, he was appointed curator of the ethnological department of the National Museum in Washington, D.C.. There he came to the attention of John Wesley Powell and was invited by him to join an anthropological expedition to New Mexico. The group travelled by rail to the end of the line at Las Vegas, then on to Zuni Pueblo where Cushing, went native, living with the Zuni from 1879 to 1884. Cushing was an innovator in the development of the anthropological view that all peoples have a culture that they draw from. He was ahead of his time as the first participant observer who entered into and participated in another culture rather than studying and commenting on it as an outside observer. His works include: Zuni Fetiches (1881), Myths of Creation (1882), A Study of Pueblo Pottery (1882-83), The Arrow (1895), Outlines of Zuni Creation Myths (1896), Primitive Motherhood (1897) and Zuni Folk Tales (1901).

Creation Myths of the World [2 volumes] by David A. Leeming Pdf

The most comprehensive resource available on creation myths from around the world—their narratives, themes, motifs, similarities, and differences—and what they reveal about their cultures of origin. ABC-CLIO's breakthrough reference work on creation beliefs from around the world returns in a richly updated and expanded new edition. From the Garden of Eden, to the female creators of Acoma Indians, to the rival creators of the Basonge tribe in the Congo, Creation Myths of the World: An Encyclopedia, Second Edition examines how different cultures explain the origins of their existence. Expanded into two volumes, the new edition of Creation Myths of the World begins with introductory essays on the five basic types of creation stories, analyzing their nature and significance. Following are over 200 creation myths, each introduced with a brief discussion of its culture of origin. At the core of the new edition is its enhanced focus on creation mythology as a global human phenomenon, with greatly expanded coverage of recurring motifs, comparative themes, the influence of geography, the social impact of myths, and more.

Historic Zuni Architecture and Society by Thomas John Ferguson Pdf

A unique approach to the Zuni Pueblo's history applying the architectural method of "space syntax" linking the structure of Zuni society to the structure of the architecture housing it. Drawing heavily on archeological findings, the volume nonetheless disputes the traditional archeological theory of population change as a basis for the changes in Zuni society, but does not offer any clear theories of its own. However, Ferguson (adjunct curator of archeology, Arizona State U.) does create a vivid historical, architectural analysis of the Zuni culture, society, and social and architectural structure from 1540 to the 1980s. Includes numerous diagrams, illustrations, and photographs.

Zuni Origins by David A. Gregory,David R. Wilcox Pdf

The Zuni are a Southwestern people whose origins have long intrigued anthropologists. This volume presents fresh approaches to that question from both anthropological and traditional perspectives, exploring the origins of the tribe and the influences that have affected their way of life. Utilizing macro-regional approaches, it brings together many decades of research in the Zuni and Mogollon areas, incorporating archaeological evidence, environmental data, and linguistic analyses to propose new links among early Southwestern peoples. The findings reported here postulate the differentiation of the Zuni language at least 7,000 to 8,000 years ago, following the initial peopling of the hemisphere, and both formulate and test the hypothesis that many Mogollon populations were Zunian speakers. Some of the contributions situate Zuni within the developmental context of Southwestern societies from Paleoindian to Mogollon. Others test the Mogollon-Zuni hypothesis by searching for contrasts between these and neighboring peoples and tracing these contrasts through macro-regional analyses of environments, sites, pottery, basketry, and rock art. Several studies of late prehistoric and protohistoric settlement systems in the Zuni area then express more cautious views on the Mogollon connection and present insights from Zuni traditional history and cultural geography. Two internationally known scholars then critique the essays, and the editors present a new research design for pursuing the question of Zuni origins. By taking stock and synthesizing what is currently known about the origins of the Zuni language and the development of modern Zuni culture, Zuni Origins is the only volume to address this subject with such a breadth of data and interpretations. It will prove invaluable to archaeologists working throughout the North American Southwest as well as to others struggling with issues of ethnicity, migration, incipient agriculture, and linguistic origins.
