During the last three decades, international trade of forest products has expanded rapidly. As a case in point, China's rapid economic growth has had profound effects on the forest economies of the Asian Pacific and the United States through demand for raw materials and exports of processed wood products (Katsigris and others 2005). Therefore, the forest portion of the 2010 Resources Planning Act (RPA) report anchors the national assessment in an international context, with specific focuses on U.S. imports and exports and how domestic production and prices relate to developments in the global forest sector.1 Using the Global Forest Products Model (GFPM) (Buongiorno and others 2003, updated in Buongiorno and Zhu 2011a), the authors of this document developed projections for world regions and selected countries that were consistent with the more detailed national projections of the United States Forest Products Module

Scenario A1B presents a 5.5-fold increase in world fuelwood use that leads to high prices of fuelwood and industrial roundwood, driven by especially strong demand in Asia for large imports from South America and Europe. World roundwood consumption reaches 11.2 billion m3 in 2060, exceeding the increment of forests, particularly in Asia. Even under scenarios A2 and B2, the harvest in Asia is unsustainable. However, scenario A1B and a low fuelwood demand lead to a global harvest of 3.6 billion m3 only and to a sustainable forest volume. The world consumption of manufactured wood products grows modestly under most scenarios, with slight changes in prices. Consumption and value added in industries increases more rapidly in Asia, due to the fast economic growth of China and India in all scenarios. As a result, Asia is a large importer of industrial roundwood from South America and Europe and of paper and paperboard from Europe and North America.

Part I, Editorial Perspectives, briefly reviews the outline of the book and analyses the balanced use of markets and policies to support world forests towards sustainable forest management. Part II reviews changes and trends in society and environment outside the forest sector. After all, the evolution of forestry and forest industries is more dependent on these external changes than on changes internal to the sector. Two important aspects that may strongly affect the future of the forest sector are covered: the potential of wood biomass in replacing oil and the global freshwater outlook.
