Overview of Quaternary Research for the Committee Bay Project, Central Nunavut by Edward C. Little Pdf

This paper presents an overview of the field research conducted during the 2001 season, along with preliminary field observations, from the second year of the Committee Bay Project's Quaternary studies. The objectives of these studies are to compile high-resolution terrain inventories for the Laughland Lake, Walker Lake, Arrowsmith River, and Ellice Hills map areas of central Nunavut; to begin a reconnaissance-scale drift prospecting program that utilizes both heavy-mineral & till geochemical analyses; and to interpret the glacial history at local & regional scales. After introductory sections on regional geology, previous research, and sampling & survey methods, the paper summarizes preliminary results from field observations regarding generalized ice movements & glacial landforms.

Geological Survey of Canada, Current Research (Online) no. 2002-C16 by Daniel J. Utting Pdf

Observations & interpretations during mapping of the Walker Lake area, central Nunavut, allowed for the identification of three landforms requiring further investigation: eskers, transverse ridges, and irregular mounds. This paper describes & interprets each of these features, then develops a hypothesis that links their origin with the area's glacial history.

Geological Survey of Canada, Current Research (Online) no. 2002-C10 by Carl A. Ozyer Pdf

Ice movement indicators have been carefully documented in the Arrowsmith River area of central mainland Nunavut, and this paper presents preliminary results of this research. It begins with background on the regional geological setting and on the field sampling methods used. Ice movement indicators & associated glacial landforms are then described, including striae, eskers, meltwater channels, moraine systems, and raised shorelines.

Contrasting Crustal Domains in the Committee Bay Belt, Walker Lake-Arrowsmith River Area, Central Nunavut by Tom Skulski Pdf

After an overview of the regional geological setting, this paper describes the geology of the three contrasting domains of the Committee Bay belt in central Nunavut. The first & largest section covers the central domain, which comprises four narrow supracrustal belts intruded by lenticular plutonic bodies. The remaining sections describe the northern crustal domain, dominated by metasedimentary rocks & granitoid plutons, and the south-east domain, dominated by granodiorite to granite batholiths that intrude rocks of the central domain.

Quaternary Geology of Southern Melville Peninsula, Nunavut by L. A. Dredge,Geological Survey of Canada Pdf

This report results from an investigation of the Quaternary geology & geomorphology of the south half of Melville Peninsula, Nunavut. The purpose of the investigation was to map the area systematically in order to determine the distribution, character, & origin of surface materials and to reconstruct the Quaternary history of the area. The first part provides background information on previous research, bedrock geology, and physiography of the area. The next part describes the nature & distribution of surficial materials & landforms, including information on their physical properties, texture, & composition along with interpretation of their mode of formation. A subsequent section on present geomorphic processes addresses topics of particular interest to environmental concerns & land management. The final section emphasizes those elements that concern mineral exploration, specifically the provenance of till, directions & distances of glacial transport, concentrations of elements in till, and their relationship to bedrock geology.

Quaternary Geology, of Northern Melville Peninsula, District of Franklin; Northwest Territories by L. A. Dredge Pdf

This report presents the first comprehensive summaries of Quaternary geology and landscape evolution for the Melville Peninsula, glaciated by the Wisconsin Laurentide Ice. After an introduction on the bedrock geology and physiography of the study area, sections of the report describe the area's surficial materials and landforms, including till, glaciofluvial and glaciolacustrine deposits and landforms, marine deposits and landforms; dispersal trains and ice dynamics; glaciation and ice flow in the study area; deglaciation of the various parts of the peninsula; glacial and postglacial sea-level changes, and their interpretation; the regional context of glaciation and sea-level change; the economic and environmental geology of Quaternary materials such as permafrost and patterned ground forms; postglacial faulting and neotectonics; and till geochemistry, with reference to drift prospecting models.

Structural and Metamorphic Geology of the Walker Lake-Arrowsmith River Area, Committee Bay Belt, Nunavut by Mary Sanborn-Barrie Pdf

The Walker Lake-Arrowsmith River area of the Committee Bay belt, Nunavut, is dominated by three crustal domains: granite-greenstone belts in the central region, a granitic batholith in the south-east, and metasedimentary rocks in the north. Rocks within all domains display moderately to strongly developed strain fabrics & structures and preserve metamorphic mineral assemblages. This paper provides preliminary observations & interpretations of fabrics, structures, and mineral assemblages from this study area. It also presents preliminary monazite chemical ages from samples from the northern & central domains, and discusses the timing & tectonic significance of tectono-metamorphic events affecting the area.

Quaternary Geology of Boothia Peninsula and Northern District of Keewatin, Central Canadian Arctic by Arthur S. Dyke Pdf

"This report describes the surficial geology of 64,000 km2 of Canada's most northern mainland and complements of a similar report on Somerset Island which lies immediately north of Boothia Peninsula being separated from it by the very narrow waters of Bellot Strait. The report discusses the potential use of geological information to future land use projects and to mineral exploration and presents new interpretations regarding the structure and dynamics of the northern part of the last ice sheet to cover Canada." --
