When a Pagan Prays by Nimue Brown Pdf

When a Pagan prays, there are many uncertainties - who we pray to, what we pray for, and what might happen to us as a consequence. Not having the same structures as other religions, Pagans can't frame prayer in the same ways, and our experiences are likely to be wilder and more personal. This book is both a wide ranging exploration of what prayer means in different faith and cultures, and a personal journey into a spiritual practice.

Chaucer's Prayers by Megan E. Murton Pdf

In a culture as steeped in communal, scripted acts of prayer as Chaucer's England, a written prayer asks not only to be read, but to be inhabited: its "I" marks a space that readers are invited to occupy. This book examines the implications of accepting that invitation when reading Chaucer's poetry. Both in his often-overlooked pious writings and in his ambitious, innovative pagan narratives, the "I" of prayer provides readers with a subject-position thatcan be at once devotional and literary - a stance before a deity and a stance in relation to a poem. Chaucer uses this uniquely open, participatory "I" to implicate readers in his poetry and to guide their work of reading. In examining Christian and pagan prayers alongside each other, Chaucer's Prayers cuts across an assumed division between the "religious" and "secular" writings within Chaucer's corpus. Rather, it emphasizes continuities andapproaches prayer as part of Chaucer's broader experimentation with literary voice. It also places Chaucer in his devotional context and foregrounds how pious practices intersect with and shape his poetic practices. These insightschallenge a received view of Chaucer as an essentially secular poet and shed new light on his poetry's relationship to religion.

Karma Dharma Pudding and Pie by Philip Appleman Pdf

Philip Appleman—award-winning poet, novelist, scholar, editor, social critic, and Darwin expert—turns his hand to humorous and sometimes irreverent verse in this, his eighth book of poetry. Appleman’s poetry, exquisitely formed, is a delightful and accomplished romp through such lofty themes as sex, religion, and aging that gleefully skewers established thinking. X. J. Kennedy writes in the foreword: “Appleman is a master of the sonnet, the terse rhymed epigram, and even that fiendishly ingenious form, the double dactyl. To watch him sling words is to be richly regaled.” from A Simple Explanation for Everything When Puritans filled all New England with dread, Hunting down women whose thoughts they abhorred, They strung up the witches until they were dead. Why did they kill? They killed for the Lord.

Pagan Prayer by Ivan Kovacs Pdf

Iván Kovács' engagement with poetry started in his high school days and has been with him throughout his life. As a Hungarian South African poet, he has published his work in numerous South African literary journals, both in English and Afrikaans. He has translated several Hungarian poets into English, amongst them Attila József, György Faludy and Jenö Heltai. By József he had published "Suburban Night and Other Poems" and by Faludy "Villon Ballads". These collections have been positively reviewed by the well-known South African poet and reviewer, Joan Hambidge on her blog "Woorde Wat Weeg". The present collection contains poems by Kovács from his earlier efforts to the present, mainly in English, but also a few written in Afrikaans. Other publications by Kovács, written in a philosophical vein, are "The Path to Higher States of Consciousness" and "Pioneers of Tibet" and show Kovács' involvement with esotericism and Oriental thought.
