Palæolithic Man and Terramara Settlements in Europe by Robert Munro Pdf

Excerpt from Palæolithic Man and Terramara Settlements in Europe: Being the Munro Lectures in Anthropology and Prehistoric Archæology in Connection With the University of Edinburgh, Delivered During February and March 1912 This volume contains the Munro Lectures in Anthropology and Prehistoric Archaeology for 1912, being the first course since the Lectureship was founded. With the exception of a few changes in phraseology, in consequence of dividing the lectures into chapters - an alteration which became necessary in order to arrange the materials under more appropriate headings - the letterpress remains unaltered. The chapter on the Transition Period is supplementary to Part I., the intention being to show some of the connecting links between the Palæolithic and Neolithic civilisations - thus partly accounting for the fate of the old-world hunters. As to the selection of the subjects of the lectures, I have only to say that Part I. was chosen on con amore grounds, and as one pregnant with recent discoveries bearing on the origin and antiquity of the human race. With regard to the subject-matter of Part II. I have to offer a few explanatory remarks. The Terramara Settlements of the Po Valley had so greatly interested me, some twenty-five years ago, that I wrote a pretty full account of their unique remains for my Lake-dwellings of Europe, classifying them as an offshoot of the adjacent Lacustrine Palafittes. That I gave a fair account of the terramara researches, and of the different theories then held with regard to their origin and purpose, there is ample evidence in the reviews of my book which appeared at the time. Building Construction Before Mechanization by John Fitchen Pdf

How were huge stones moved from quarries to the sites of Egyptian pyramids? How did the cathedral builders of the Middle Ages lift blocks to great heights by muscle power alone? In this intriguing book John Fitchen explains and illustrates the solutions to these and many other puzzles in preindustrial building construction. This is the first general survey of the practices and role of the builder (as opposed to the designer) in constructing an array of structures. Fitchen's approach gives a valuable hands-on feel for what it's like to work with ropes and ladders, wedges and slings; with crews engaged in well digging, bridge building, and the transporting of obelisks hundreds of miles by water and over land. The buildings discussed range from the tents, tepees, and igloos of nomadic tribes to the monumental pyramids of Egypt, the temples of Greece, the aqueducts of Rome, and the cathedrals of medieval Europe.

The Scottish Invention of America, Democracy and Human Rights by Alexander Leslie Klieforth,Robert John Munro Pdf

The Scottish Invention of America, Democracy and Human Rights is a history of liberty from 1300 BC to 2004 AD. The book traces the history of the philosophy and fight for freedom from the ancient Celts to the medieval Scots to the Scottish Enlightenment to the creation of America. The work contends that the roots of liberty originated in the radical political thought of the ancient Celts, the Scots' struggle for freedom, John Duns Scotus and the Scottish declaration of independence (Arbroath, 1320) that were the primary basis of the American Declaration of Independence and the modern human rights movement.
