Excerpt from The Parish Registers of England This work, a great improvement upon the straggling chapters of Burn's bigger book, was much appreciated, especially by the clergy; but it has been long out of print, and difficult to procure through second-hand agencies. Meanwhile, I kept steadily before my mind the hope of producing a book which, whilst based upon the labours of my predecessors, Burn and Waters, should strike out a wider line of its own, and aim at a better arrangement and at a fuller explanation of unusual points. At last, after many interruptions, literary and otherwise, the idea has matured, and these pages are put forth with a fair amount of hope that they may prove useful and helpful to those who desire to have a better understanding of parochial registers. Another book on this subject was produced in 1908, of the highest value and yet in no sense clashing with this work or causing me to falter in my task, which had then made considerable advance. I allude to Mr. Arthur Meredyth Burke's volume called A Key to the Ancient Parish Registers of England and Wales. In the following year a supplement of addenda and corrigenda was also issued. The object of this laborious work is to provide those who have reason to consult parish registers with an easy and reliable guide as to the period covered by each of them, and also with information as to their having been printed, if such has been the case. Excerpt from Parish Registers in England, Their History and Contents: With Suggestions for Securing Their Better Custody and PreservationThe want has long been felt of a handy and in expensive manual of the law and practice of registra tion, which could be consulted with confidence and read with amusement by those, who have parish registers In their charge and take an intelligent interest in their history and contents.' The only book on the subject is that of the late Mr. R. S. Burn, who was employed by the Government in the preparation of the Civil Registration Bill of 1837, and was a member of both the Royal Commissions, which were subsequently appointed for the purpose of collecting and authenti cating non-parochial registers. It would be ungracious to dwell on the defects of so diligent a labourer in a newly explored field of learning, but Mr. Burn was more successful in collecting facts than in marshalling and digesting his collections, and his History of Parish Registers is disfigured by frequent inaccuracy of quota tion, and by a want of power to grasp his subject, which makes it difficult for his readers to form a clear connected view of the different stages through which the question of registration has passed.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Henry-Algernon, fifth Earl of Northumberland, whose household book is well known to antiquaries, was born Jan. 13, 1477-8, and his double name appears on his garter1 plate in St. George's Chapel. But it must be doubted whether the earl was christened Algernon, for at that time baptismal names were taken without exception from the saints of the Church; and it is more probable that he adopted in the pride of race the Norman sobriquet or surname of his ancestor William de Percy, who was distinguished in the court of William Kufus as William Alsgernons, or William 'with the moustache.'2 With this doubtful exception, the first example of a double name which I have met with is in Fuller,3 the Church historian, who says that Queen Mary gave to her godsons 'her own name in addition to their Christian names, ' so that they were called Anthony-Maria, Edward-Maria, &c. But in the reigns of Elizabeth and James I. the use of two names was so rare in England, that not a single instance occurs amongst the 2,222 students admitted to the Inner Temple4 between 1571 and 1625; and Camden the antiquary5 expressly states, --'I only remember now his Majesty, who was named Charles James, and the Prince his sonne Henry Frederic; and among private men, Thos. Maria Wingfield and Sir Thomas Posthumus Hobby.' In the next generation a few noble ladies were named Henrietta Maria out of compliment to the queen, but a double name was regarded as a foreign fashion, and was almost confined to the royal family. The only instance which I have noticed universally followed the example set by the court. But the Huguenots for a long time regarded it as a Popish invention, which they had scruples in accepting; and it was gravely debated.
