Active political engagement requires the youth of today to begin their journeys now to be leaders of tomorrow. Young individuals are instrumental in providing valuable insight into issues locally as well as on a national and international level. Participation of Young People in Governance Processes in Africa examines the role of young peoples’ involvement in governance processes in Africa and demonstrates how they are engaging in active citizenship. There is an intrinsic value in upholding their right to participate in decisions that affect their daily lives and their communities, and the content within this publication supports this by focusing on topics such as good citizenship, youth empowerment, democratic awareness, political climate, and socio-economic development. Poor Youth Participation in Decision Making and Development in African Countries , a Cause for Concern: the Case of Zimbabwe by George M. Chikwanda Pdf

This paper carries out a critical investigation pertaining to youth participation and empowerment in Africa using Zimbabwe as the case study. Youths have generally been neglected in critical decision making processes in Africa and beyond. They have been relegated to the role of mare spectators and not as active contributors to decision making processes. Failure to involve youths in decision making and development at both Local and National levels is a sustainable development threat as it works against the spirit of National continuity and Ubuntu. If youths are involved in decision making and development, sustainable Local and National development is a guaranteed reality as youths are well braced with the techniques of running modern day organisations in this digital era. A common statement linked to sustainable development in the African proverbs circles goes like "Youths are the leaders of tomorrow" which shows why youths should fit in the current leadership and management challenges for the destiny or fate of the nation rests in youths. An unescapable reality is that failure to empower and involve youths is an enemy of National continuity. Several factors have been identified by the research as the hindrances or obstacles to effective youth participation in Zimbabwe. These includes age restriction in participating in politics, politicisation of youth participation, unsupportive legislative frameworks, stereotyping youth participation and empowerment, intolerance by the elderly to integrate youths into key decision making processes and lack of support for each other by youths themselves to mention but a few. In face of these challenges associated with lack of youth empowerment and failure to make them active participants in decision making , this paper recommends a paradigm shift which entails a change of perception by elderly in their view towards youths. They have to view youths as accompanies in the Local and National development drive and not as a hostile segment of the society or as lazy people who are always into crime and drugs. Also there is need to revisit legal frameworks in order to mainstream youth empowerment issues. This research fuses both qualitative and quantitative research designs. Three main sampling techniques were used for the purposes of this research and these includes simple random, convenience and judgemental sampling techniques. Research information was collected using primary data sources (interviews, questionnaires, observations and focus groups) as well as secondary sources which are mainly the already existing literature pertaining to youth empowerment and participation issues. Data was presented and analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively using graphs, tables and critical analysis and discussion of the presented information. The research therefore hits hard on one of the current and topical issues that needs special attention from relevant authorities.

Citizen participation in local governance in Africa by Margaret Wanjiku Ngunjiri Pdf

Local governance comprises a set of institutions, mechanisms and processes through which citizens and their groups can articulate their interests and needs and mediate their differences. The participation of citizens in governance is one of the underlying components of democracy. Engaging citizens in the act of governance engenders transparency, improves accountability and public resource management and brings about good policy outcomes, development and the social well-being of citizens. When done effectively, it encourages inclusiveness and cohesiveness, speeds up problem-solving through community initiatives and generally improves the effectiveness of local authorities. This Report is an exploratory study which adopted various strategies to try to understand the issues, perspectives and results from citizen participation in local governance across various countries and regions in Africa.

Impact of Political Socialization on the Support for Democratic Principles: Emerging Research and Opportunities by Ellis, Allison Clark Pdf

As we come upon the 30th anniversary of communism’s fall, it is a good time to reexamine what life was like behind the Iron Curtain and how communism impacted people for generations. The study of communication is important as it shows how much effect government type has on the principles its people support. Those interested in promoting and maintaining democratic ideals in countries around the world require a book such as this to better understand the effect communism has had. Impact of Political Socialization on the Support for Democratic Principles: Emerging Research and Opportunities examines life under communism in Czechoslovakia and Hungary with particular attention paid to education, religion, travel, and exposure to Western culture, as well as their transition to democracy and how successful that transition has been. The book makes the case that being politically socialized under communism has made embracing democratic principles more difficult. The evidence for this case is based on 200 interviews conducted in 2017-18 with people who lived in Czechoslovakia and Hungary during communism, present-day analysis of government and politics in the Czech Republic and Hungary, and survey data from the European Social Survey. The main struggles in transitioning to democracy are identified, and it is speculated whether the Czech Republic and Hungary can ever be long-term, fully functioning democracies. The main implications of this publication are how government type during political socialization affects support for democratic principles, and whether the United States could ever be at risk for democratic erosion. The book is intended for political scientists, government officials, historians, academicians, researchers, and students.

Democracy, Good Governance and Development in Africa by Mawere, Munyaradzi,Mwanaka, Tendai R. Pdf

Questions surrounding democracy, governance, and development especially in the view of Africa have provoked acrimonious debates in the past few years. It remains a perennial question why some decades after political independence in Africa the continent continues experiencing bad governance, lagging behind socioeconomically, and its democracy questionable. We admit that a plethora of theories and reasons, including iniquitous and malicious ones, have been conjured in an attempt to explain and answer the questions as to why Africa seems to be lagging behind other continents in issues pertaining to good governance, democracy and socio-economic development. Yet, none of the theories and reasons proffered so far seems to have provided enduring solutions to Africa’s diverse complex problems and predicaments. This book dissects and critically examines the matrix of Africa’s multifaceted problems on governance, democracy and development in an attempt to proffer enduring solutions to the continent’s long-standing political and socio-economic dilemmas and setbacks.

Digital Dissidence and Social Media Censorship in Africa by Farooq A. Kperogi Pdf

This book reflects on the rapid rise of social media across the African continent and the legal and extra-legal efforts governments have invented to try to contain it. The relentless growth of social media platforms in Africa has provided the means of resistance, self-expression, and national self-fashioning for the continent’s restlessly energetic and contagiously creative youth. This has provided a profound challenge to the African "gatekeeper state", which has often responded with strategies to constrict and constrain the rhetorical luxuriance of the social media and digital sphere. Drawing on cases from across the continent, contributors explore the form and nature of social media and government censorship, often via antisocial media laws, or less overt tactics such as state cybersurveillance, spyware attacks on social media activists, or the artful deployment of the rhetoric of "fake news" as a smokescreen to muzzle critical voices. The book also reflects on the Chinese influence in African governments’ clampdown on social media and the role of Israeli NSO Group Technologies, as well as the tactics and technologies which activists and users are deploying to resist or circumvent social media censorship. Drawing on a range of methodologies and disciplinary approaches, this book will be an important contribution to researchers with an interest in social media activism, digital rebellion, discursive democracy in transitional societies, censorship on the Internet, and Africa more broadly.

Youth Participation in the Caribbean by Terri-Ann Gilbert-Roberts Pdf

Critically examining narratives of participation in governance and development, this volume adds Caribbean voices and experiences to the global discourse on youth participation. The essays provide empirical case studies of institutions, practices and processes of youth engagement in the politics of Caribbean development, orienting the reader to the political culture of the Caribbean and the position of youth within small societies. Covering experiences at intergovernmental, national and local levels, as well as formal and informal modes of participation, it examines how young people have organised themselves or have been organised to engage with the state and with community agents in politics, public policy and activism. It illustrates the heterogeneity of youth political participation, employing multi- disciplinary, multi- level and mixed- method analyses from the fields of demography, political science, social policy, development studies and youth development. Critical themes addressed include regional governance, democratic representation, online engagement, local governance and community development. In exploring these themes, the book discusses the legitimacy and inclusiveness of governance in relation to age, gender, race, geography and socio-economic status. The findings will be useful to students, researchers and policymakers alike who are keen to improve governance and contribute to inclusive sustainable development in the Caribbean.
