Deception's Path by Henry J. Gambino Pdf

When prominent businessman and arts patron E. Dillon Parsons is murdered at the prestigious Verdi Society’s annual masquerade ball, Homicide Lieutenant Douglas MacArthur Kim is plunged into the Philadelphia arts scene, where, to find the killer he must follow a path of deception in which the arts are subject to corporate whim and justice is subordinated to political expediency. When three other members of the city’s arts scene are murdered, the pathways of deception branch even farther, forcing Kim to cope with pressure from his superior officer, who wants to be police commissioner; from the District Attorney, who wants to be mayor; and from an overbearing newspaper editor, who wants headlines. They want an arrest and conviction, even though Kim is convinced the prime suspect is innocent. Along the way, Kim must come to grips with the deceptions of his own life. Half Korean, half Caucasian, he is torn between two cultures. Unsure of his own identity, he has become alienated from his American stepfather, who brought him to this country and raised him as his own, then abandoned him and his mother for another woman. Now, he must follow deception’s path until he reaches a doorway of truth.

Irony, Deception and Humour by Marta Dynel Pdf

This book offers fresh perspectives on untruthfulness entailed in various forms of irony, deception and humour, which have so far constituted independent foci of linguistic and philosophical investigation. These three distinct (albeit sometimes co-occurring) notions are brought together within a neo-Gricean framework and consistently discussed as representing overt or covert untruthfulness. The postulates that represent the interface between language philosophy and pragmatics are illustrated with scripted interactions culled from the series House, which help appreciate the complexities of the three concepts at hand. Apart from affording new insights into the nature of irony, deception and humour, this book critically examines previous literature on these notions, as well as relevant aspects of Grice's philosophy of language. Giving a state-of-the-art picture of untruthfulness, this publication will be of interest to both experienced and inexperienced researchers studying Grice’s philosophy, irony, deception and/or humour.

Empire Of Deception by Dean Jobb Pdf

In the tradition of bestselling books like The Devil in the White City and The Man in the Rockefeller Suit, Empire of Deception combines investigative journalism and captivating storytelling to examine one of the greatest con men of the twentieth century It was a time of unregulated madness. And nowhere was it more mad than in Chicago at the dawn of the Roaring Twenties. Speakeasies thrived, gang war shootings announced Al Capone's rise to underworld domination, Chicago's corrupt political leaders fraternized with gangsters and the frenzy of stock market gambling was rampant. Enter a slick, smooth-talking, charismatic lawyer named Leo Koretz, who enticed hundreds of people to invest as much as $30 million—upwards of $400 million today—in phantom timberland and non-existent oil wells in Panama. When Leo's scheme finally collapsed in 1923, he vanished, and the Chicago state's attorney, a man whose lust for power equalled Leo's own lust for money, began an international manhunt that lasted almost a year. When finally apprehended, Leo was living a life of luxury in Nova Scotia under the assumed identity of a book dealer and literary critic. His mysterious death in a Chicago prison topped anything in his almost-too-bizarre-to-believe life. Empire of Deception is not only an incredibly rich and detailed account of a man and an era; it is a fascinating look at the methods of swindlers throughout history. Leo Koretz was the Bernie Madoff of his day, and Dean Jobb shows us that the dream of easy wealth is a timeless commodity.

Vital Truth and Precepts by Felix Amiri Pdf

Synopsis Free Study Guide Additional Retailers Dare to think beyond the ordinary and live above mere existence. An old hymn by William P. Merrill calls us to: "rise up [and] have done with lesser things" [emphasis added]. We must awaken to what is happening in our world and flee from folly. Escaping the seductive embrace of worldliness requires us to be vigilant. We must shun all distractions, deception and alluring digressions. Like repentant prodigals, we need to persistently run to our Father's protective and loving embrace. Even our temporal survival depends on this. It is a sad reality today that while many disregard God, others are misinformed about him. There is widespread digression from the truth. Each of these abnormalities leads to serious consequences. Hence, we must flee to God. This book discusses God's supremacy, sovereignty, and absolute attributes. God's purpose for his creation, mankind's fall, individual culpability, God's grace and salvation through Jesus Christ are examined. Among the key convictions conveyed is the fact that true liberation comes only from an obedient response to the transcendent supremacy and will of God. One cannot properly glorify God without a correct understanding and application of the truth. Therefore, seeking the truth is the most prudent engagement for mankind. All are called upon to appropriately respond to God. For some, this book may be the beginning of a long term exploration. For others, it may serve as the encouragement to continue in their commitment to the truth. Vital Truth and Precepts could serve as a resource for personal or group study. It provides useful teaching or study content for Sunday school teachers, as well as for professors and students in bible colleges and seminaries. New Christians and even people who are not followers of Christ might find it helpful in understanding the Christian faith. Exposing Pathways to Deception in the Lives of Believers by Ruth Helen Taylor-Meyers Pdf

The title mentions exposing pathways to Deception. Deception is a process, a road, a path. We need a map, a compass, and a way of knowing the difference between Deception and Truth. But what kind of Truth? Truth that helps us succeed only in this life, or truth that prepares us to live for eternity in a presently invisible System of Reality? Shouldn’t we listen and obey this God who, from the invisible realms, reveals Himself to us through an objective Truth Source called the Bible, & His Son, Jesus, and His Holy Spirit?

Cross-cultural Deception in Polish and American English in Computer-Mediated Communication by Anna Kuzio Pdf

Deception is omnipresent throughout the evolution of life, inseparable from the development of various modes of communication. By effectively manipulating the behavior of others, apparently by taking advantage of recipients’ own rules, communicators are able to gain an advantage while negotiating meaning in a cross-cultural environment. Even though much research related to deceptive behavior and its detection has been conducted in recent years, little of it has concentrated on deception outside of a North American context. This monograph addresses that lacuna. Consistently, most research on deception has examined face-to-face verbal communication and ignored computer-mediated communication. In response, this book also provides detailed insights into how computer-mediated communication and adopted cultural values affect deceptive communication and deception detection across cultures, namely in Poland and the USA. It focuses on discussing theories about why cues to deception exist, theories specific to verbal cues to deception, and theories about computer mediation in communication. The book also proposes a research model postulating relationships between computer-mediated communication media, cue detection, media familiarity, national culture, espoused cultural values, veracity judgment success, and deceptive communicative behavior.
