Pathophysiology and Pharmacology of Heart Disease by Naranjan S. Dhalla,Inder S. Anand,Purshotam L. Wahi Pdf

Research at the molecular and the cellular level has greatly enhanced our understanding of the pathogenesis and management of heart disease. Valuable contributions, towards this end, have been made by scientists from different dis ciplines including biochemistry, physiology, pathology, molecular biology and biophysics. We felt that it would be of interest and value to bring together ex perts from diverse specialities to present their work and to discuss the common problems encountered in their endeavours. In accordance, a symposium was organised in February 1988 at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh. It was held during the annual meeting of the Indian section of the International Society for Heart Research. This book is a compila tion of some of the papers presented at the symposium. The symposium was sponsored by the Council on Cardiac Metabolism of the International Society and Federation of Cardiology. A number of Indian or ganisations gave generous financial help. These included the National Academy of Medical Sciences, Indian Council of Medical Research, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and Department of Science and Technology. Desktop publishing was used to prepare this volume. In doing so we came to appreciate the remarkable qualities, skills and help rendered by Professor Dharam Vir. For typing the manuscripts and for other secretarial assistance we gratefully acknowledge the help of Ravinder and Sawtantar. Pathophysiology of Heart Disease by Naranjan S. Dhalla,Pawan K. Singal,Robert E. Beamish Pdf

It is indeed ironical that in the absence of a complete knowledge of Pathophysiology, clinical cardiologists are left with no choice but to do the best they can to help the patient with the armamentarium of drugs at their disposal. But nothing could be further from truth than to treat the diagnosed end point of a disease process without a full understanding of its patho physiology. This point was eloquently made by Dr. Arnold Katz in his Presidential Address (Chapter 1) at the 8th Annual Meeting of the American Section of the International Society for Heart Research held in Winnipeg, Canada, July 8-11, 1986. This volume represents a part of the scientific proceedings of this Meeting. From a reading of this treatise it will become evident that discoveries of newer scientific facts as well as a better understanding of pathophysiology are continuously influencing/ improving our therapeutic approaches in modern medicine. In this book, latest biochemical, physiological and pharmacological findings on different experimental models such as Myocaridal hypertrophy, Hypertension and heart failure, Diabetes, Cardio myopathies and Cardiac function in shock are described by internationally recognised experts. Hopefully information presented here will provide another building block to the edifice of Science of Cardiology which we all are trying to create. Congestive Heart Failure by Jeffrey D. Hosenpud,Barry H. Greenberg Pdf

This book is the first to approach the field of congestive heart failure as a true subspecialty of cardiology and cardiovascular surgery. The text discusses the entire field of congestive heart failure: the basic pathophysiologic mechanisms; the underlying diseases; the effects of heart failure on the remainder of circulation; the mechanisms and results of pharmacologic therapy; the multiple surgical and multidisciplinary approaches to end-stage heart disease; and the ultimate prognosis of congestive heart failure in all of the areas of heart failure management. Thus, this text uniquely puts into perspective all of the features of congestive heart failure and its management for the cardiologist, cardiovascular surgeon, and general internist.

Acute Heart Failure by Alexandre Mebazaa,Mihai Gheorghiade,Faiez Zannad,Joseph E. Parrillo Pdf

For many years, there has been a great deal of work done on chronic congestive heart failure while acute heart failure has been considered a difficult to handle and hopeless syndrome. However, in recent years acute heart failure has become a growing area of study and this is the first book to cover extensively the diagnosis and management of this complex condition. The book reflects the considerable amounts of new data reported and many new concepts which have been proposed in the last 3-4 years looking at the epidemiology, diagnostic and treatment of acute heart failure.

Handbook of Pathology and Pathophysiology of Cardiovascular Disease by Stephen M. Factor,Maria A. Lamberti-Abadi,Jacobo Abadi Pdf

Autopsy derives from the greek word autopsia, which means act of seeing with one’s own eyes. It remains the most objective and accurate method to understand human. disease. Unfortunately, the volume of autopsies in teaching hospitals has decreased dramatically over the past years. The crucial factors that account for this are the recent progress and development of new technologies, especially in diagnostic imaging, immunology, cell biology and genetics. Additionally, the perpetual fear of legal liability by physicians accounts for its further decline. Consequently, physicians and medical students are engaged in fewer autopsies and are not reaping the rich educational rewards that accompany these examinations. The purpose of the autopsy is not only to establish the cause of death, but also to determine the nature and course of the disease process. Our goal with this book is to emphasize the importance of the post-mortem exam and the correlation between pathologic material and clinical data by analyzing actual cases with problem-based methodology. The focus of this handbook is on cardiovascular disease, and when appropriate, other disease categories are included if they have an impact on cardiovascular function. The approach is more than the usual clinico-pathological correlation. Rather, we attempt to present the material from the perspective of the autopsy table. We use the clinical data as the initial framework and the autopsy findings to develop a true understanding of the disease and the associated pathophysiology of the condition.

This Second Edition of Dr. Katz's highly acclaimed text has been thoroughly revised to incorporate the latest advances in the study and treatment of heart failure. The book explains the pathophysiology, molecular mechanisms, clinical manifestations, and therapy of heart failure in an integrated, reader-friendly manner that is accessible to both clinicians and basic scientists. More than 100 illustrations, most created for this book by the authors, complement the text. This edition has been completely reorganized. Chapters describe the hemodynamic basis for the clinical manifestations of heart failure; the neurohumoral responses in heart failure and key signaling pathways that mediate functional responses; the proliferative responses in failing hearts; the cellular and molecular abnormalities in the failing heart; the rationale for various therapeutic approaches; and the management of specific groups of patients. The chapters on therapy have been written by a noted clinician, Marvin A. Konstam.

Cellular and Molecular Pathobiology of Cardiovascular Disease by Monte Willis,Jonathon W. Homeister,James R. Stone Pdf

Cellular and Molecular Pathobiology of Cardiovascular Disease focuses on the pathophysiology of common cardiovascular disease in the context of its underlying mechanisms and molecular biology. This book has been developed from the editors' experiences teaching an advanced cardiovascular pathology course for PhD trainees in the biomedical sciences, and trainees in cardiology, pathology, public health, and veterinary medicine. No other single text-reference combines clinical cardiology and cardiovascular pathology with enough molecular content for graduate students in both biomedical research and clinical departments. The text is complemented and supported by a rich variety of photomicrographs, diagrams of molecular relationships, and tables. It is uniquely useful to a wide audience of graduate students and post-doctoral fellows in areas from pathology to physiology, genetics, pharmacology, and more, as well as medical residents in pathology, laboratory medicine, internal medicine, cardiovascular surgery, and cardiology. Explains how to identify cardiovascular pathologies and compare with normal physiology to aid research Gives concise explanations of key issues and background reading suggestions Covers molecular bases of diseases for better understanding of molecular events that precede or accompany the development of pathology
