Pattern Design by Lewis F. Day Pdf

Excerpt from Pattern Design: A Book for Students Treating in a Practical Way of the Anatomy, Planning Evolution of Repeated Ornament A man has a right, I suppose, to pull down the building he once put up, and to raise another in' its place. If he should see fit to use sometimes the very stones which belonged to it, he would only be stealing from himself. I have done something very much like that. In the course of the last fifteen years the times have changed, and with them the standpoint of students and teachers of design; and, though my point of View has not altered, my outlook has widened with experience. When it came to the revision of The Anatomy of Pattern with a View to a fifth edition, it seemed to me I had done all I could do to it, that it was past mending, and that the simplest thing would be to start afresh. The present volume, however, though it covers the ground of the former one, and answers much the same purpose, is not the same, but really a new book upon the foundations of the old one. It contains, indeed, all that was in the other, but otherwise expressed. Here and there an explanation or description, which, by revision after revision, had been reduced to the fewest and plainest words I could find, has been allowed to stand. '80 with the illustrations, the greater number of them are new. Such of the old diagrams as were essential to the purpose of the book have been drawn again, not merely on the larger scale allowed by the page, but in a simpler and more self-explanatory way. Arts and Crafts Movement in New Zealand, 1870-1940 by Ann Calhoun Pdf

"Reveals ... the exquisite work and extraordinary skill of a group of New Zealand artists, most of them women, working in a wide variety of art and craft forms ... This flowering of local talent ... originated in the British Arts and Crafts movement and is associated with the growth of art education in this country: its quiet but dedicated character also suggests much about the situation of women in the years before and after 1900"--Jacket.

Space Tessellations by Werner Van Hoeydonck,Christian Kern,Eva Sommeregger Pdf

Tackling a topic that has particular appeal in the age of digital design, this well-founded introduction to the subject of parquet deformation fills a gap. These subtle, intricate geometric transformations, best known through the "Metamorphosis" series by M. C. Escher, were introduced to design curricula by American professor William S. Huff in the 1960s. The book brings together scholarly articles by the most important authors in the field and material collected in the archives of the Ulm School of Design in Germany, juxtaposed with extensive illustrations of two- and three-dimensional works created at the Vienna University of Technology. Written for anyone interested in the fields of design and geometry, this book aims to inform and inspire.

Nineteenth-Century Design by Clive Edwards Pdf

This is volume one in a four-volume edition of primary source materials that document the histories of design across the long nineteenth century. Each volume is arranged by appropriate sub-themes and it is the first set of primary sources to be gathered together in this comprehensive and accessible format. Design refers to more than simply products and personalities or even cultural ideas, it involves consideration of ways of design thinking and applications as well as the philosophies and the other disciplines that impinge upon it. Here, the first volume discusses the theories and discourses that underpinned nineteenth-century design, ranging from design reform to aesthetics, and from the question of ornament to design education. The volumes will be of interest to a range of scholars and students, including those in art and design history, visual culture, and nineteenth-century material culture. They will also be of interest to a broad range of scholars working in areas including aesthetics, gender, politics and philosophy.

Nineteenth-Century Interiors by Clive Edwards Pdf

This volume of primary source materials documents the essential practical aspects of making a home, decorating it and then furnishing it. The crucial constitutive parts that make up an interior from floor to ceiling are considered here in detail. The role of advice books and articles that attempted to direct homemakers in particular directions are examined, as are the more practical how-to publications that demonstrated the processes of interior decoration. Accompanied by extensive editorial commentary, this collection will be of great interest to students and scholars of art history.
