Pattern Recognition on Oriented Matroids by Andrey O. Matveev Pdf
Pattern Recognition on Oriented Matroids covers a range of innovative problems in combinatorics, poset and graph theories, optimization, and number theory that constitute a far-reaching extension of the arsenal of committee methods in pattern recognition. The groundwork for the modern committee theory was laid in the mid-1960s, when it was shown that the familiar notion of solution to a feasible system of linear inequalities has ingenious analogues which can serve as collective solutions to infeasible systems. A hierarchy of dialects in the language of mathematics, for instance, open cones in the context of linear inequality systems, regions of hyperplane arrangements, and maximal covectors (or topes) of oriented matroids, provides an excellent opportunity to take a fresh look at the infeasible system of homogeneous strict linear inequalities – the standard working model for the contradictory two-class pattern recognition problem in its geometric setting. The universal language of oriented matroid theory considerably simplifies a structural and enumerative analysis of applied aspects of the infeasibility phenomenon. The present book is devoted to several selected topics in the emerging theory of pattern recognition on oriented matroids: the questions of existence and applicability of matroidal generalizations of committee decision rules and related graph-theoretic constructions to oriented matroids with very weak restrictions on their structural properties; a study (in which, in particular, interesting subsequences of the Farey sequence appear naturally) of the hierarchy of the corresponding tope committees; a description of the three-tope committees that are the most attractive approximation to the notion of solution to an infeasible system of linear constraints; an application of convexity in oriented matroids as well as blocker constructions in combinatorial optimization and in poset theory to enumerative problems on tope committees; an attempt to clarify how elementary changes (one-element reorientations) in an oriented matroid affect the family of its tope committees; a discrete Fourier analysis of the important family of critical tope committees through rank and distance relations in the tope poset and the tope graph; the characterization of a key combinatorial role played by the symmetric cycles in hypercube graphs. Structural, Syntactic, and Statistical Pattern Recognition by Ana Fred,Terry Caelli,Robert P.W. Duin,Aurélio Campilho,Dick de Ridder Pdf
This volume contains all papers presented at SSPR 2004 and SPR 2004, hosted by the Instituto de Telecomunicac ̃ ̧oes/Instituto Superior T ́ ecnico, Lisbon, Portugal, August 18-20, 2004. This was the fourth time that the two workshops were held back-to-back. The SSPR was the tenth International Workshop on Structural and Synt- tic Pattern Recognition, and the SPR was the ?fth International Workshop on Statistical Techniques in Pattern Recognition. These workshops have traditi- ally been held in conjunction with ICPR (International Conference on Pattern Recognition), and are the major events for technical committees TC2 and TC1, respectively, of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR). The workshops were closely coordinated, being held in parallel, with plenary talks and a common session on hybrid systems. This was an attempt to resolve thedilemmaofhowto dealwiththeneedfornarrow-focusspecializedworkshops yet accommodate the presentation of new theories and techniques that blur the distinction between the statistical and the structural approaches. A total of 219 papers were received from many countries, with the subm- sion and reviewing processes being carried out separately for each workshop. A total of 59 papers were accepted for oral presentation and 64 for posters. In - dition, four invited speakers presented informative talks and overviews of their research. They were: Alberto Sanfeliu, from the Technical University of Cata- nia, Spain; Marco Gori, from the University of Siena, Italy; Nello Cristianini, from the University of California, USA; and Erkki Oja, from Helsinki University of Technology, Finland, winner of the 2004 Pierre Devijver Award.

Handbook of Discrete and Combinatorial Mathematics by Kenneth H. Rosen Pdf
Handbook of Discrete and Combinatorial Mathematics provides a comprehensive reference volume for mathematicians, computer scientists, engineers, as well as students and reference librarians. The material is presented so that key information can be located and used quickly and easily. Each chapter includes a glossary. Individual topics are covered in sections and subsections within chapters, each of which is organized into clearly identifiable parts: definitions, facts, and examples. Examples are provided to illustrate some of the key definitions, facts, and algorithms. Some curious and entertaining facts and puzzles are also included. Readers will also find an extensive collection of biographies. This second edition is a major revision. It includes extensive additions and updates. Since the first edition appeared in 1999, many new discoveries have been made and new areas have grown in importance, which are covered in this edition.

Symmetric Cycles by Andrey O. Matveev Pdf
This original research monograph concerns various aspects of how (based on the decompositions of vertices of hypercube graphs with respect to their symmetric cycles) the vertex sets of related discrete hypercubes, as well as the power sets of the corresponding ground sets, emerge from rank 2 oriented matroids, from underlying rank 2 systems of linear inequalities, and thus literally from arrangements of straight lines crossing a common point on a piece of paper. It reveals some beautiful and earlier-hidden fragments in the true foundations of discrete mathematics. The central observation made and discussed in the book from various viewpoints consists in that 2t subsets of a finite t-element set Et, which form in a natural way a cyclic structure (well, just t subsets that are the vertices of a path in the cycle suffice), allow us to construct any of 2t subsets of the set Et by means of a more than elementary voting procedure expressed in basic linear algebraic terms. The monograph will be of interest to researchers, students, and readers in the fields of discrete mathematics, theoretical computer science, Boolean function theory, enumerative combinatorics and combinatorics on words, combinatorial optimization, coding theory, and discrete and computational geometry.

Pattern Recognition by Sergios Theodoridis,Konstantinos Koutroumbas Pdf
Pattern recognition is a scientific discipline that is becoming increasingly important in the age of automation and information handling and retrieval. This volume's treatment covers pattern recognition applications, from image analysis to speech recognition and communications. It includes discussion of the latest techniques in wavelets, wavelet packets, and fractals. This book presents material on neural networks, and enhances student motivation by approaching pattern recognition from the designer's point of view. A direct result of more than 10 years of teaching experience, the text was developed by the authors through use in their own classrooms.
