Paul the Letter-Writer and the Second Letter to Timothy by Michael Prior Pdf

This study argues for new perspectives on the letters of Paul, especially the Second Letter to Timothy. It examines striking aspects of Paul's letters, especially the fact that many of them are co-authored, that six of them acknowledge that a secretary has penned the letter, and that 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy and Titus are the only ones addressed to individuals. It investigates the implications of these facts for the concept of Pauline authorship. Prior maintains that the received arguments, statistical as well as literary, which exclude 2 Timothy from the influence of Paul, are less than convincing. The author suggests an original reading of 2 Timothy arguing it was composed by Paul towards the end of his first Roman imprisonment. Contrary to all interpretations of the letter which argue that Paul was about to be martyred, Prior claims that Paul was confident that he would be released, and was assembling a mission team to bring his proclamation of the Gospel to a completion. Timothy's courage and missionary zeal needed rekindling, for he and Mark were to be key figures in this new team.

Apostle of the Crucified Lord by Gorman, Michael Pdf

THIS COMPREHENSIVE, WIDELY USED TEXT by Michael Gorman presents a theologically focused, historically grounded interpretation of the apostle Paul and raises significant questions for engaging Paul today. After providing substantial background information on Paul's world, career, letters, gospel, spirituality, and theology, Gorman covers in full detail each of the thirteen Pauline epistles. Enhancing the text are questions for reflection and discussion at the end of each chapter as well as numerous photos, maps, and tables throughout. The new introduction in this second edition helpfully situates the book within current approaches to Paul. Gorman also brings the conversation up-to-date with major recent developments in Pauline studies and devotes greater attention to themes of participation, transformation, resurrection, justice, and peace.

Through the Year with Granny Gwen by Gwen Ward Pdf

This book takes you through the year through the eyes of a senior citizen. She was saved and baptized at the age of eleven. She continues to discover new things as she reads and studies the Bible. She gains an even greater appreciation for the writers of both the Old and the New Testaments as she tries her hand at writing. She realizes that the Bible is the inspired Word of God and was written by men who were not perfect. Each person has strengths and weaknesses, and as such has made mistakes. They each learn that they must rely on God, just as we must learn to do. God loves each of us, and has our best interests in mind. The path on which He leads us may not be the easiest or the quickest, but it turns out to be the best for God's purposes and as such, is also the best one for us. The author shares memories of her life during the Depression and into the computer age, and frustrations she has while learning to use the new technology. You will be encouraged to look at your own memories in a new light and recognize how God was directing your path even when you didn't realize He was doing it!

Literary Study of the Bible by Christopher Hodgkins Pdf

The most comprehensive and accessible introduction to scriptural art yet written Literary Study of the Bible: An Introduction approaches each book of the Bible (including several of the apocrypha) with non-sectarian literary questions, exploring the meanings that the Bible reveals when we read it like a poem, narrative, or play. As a unique hybrid of introductory guide, essential handbook, historical survey, and absorbing commentary, this book fills a gap in literary Bible study with its fresh perspectives on the biblical writers’ many arts. Readers will engage in wide range of textual approaches and interpretive traditions through this broadly informed, accessibly written text. Dr. Christopher Hodgkins has taught Literary Study of the Bible for 25 years, over which time he has field-tested the many lenses—of genre, image, language, characterization, plot, and craft—used throughout this book. Tracing the sources, composition, and influences of the Biblical text, this book places the Bible in a tradition of ancient near eastern, Hebrew, and Hellenistic literary art, giving new depth to the way we understand the familiar stories of scripture. Unlike other literary introductions to the Bible, this book uniquely combines these elements: Approaches the Bible as a richly collaborative and coherent work of literary art, exploring how earlier books influence the creation and interpretation of later ones Provides illuminating commentary supplemented by explanatory textboxes, maps, illustrations, and study questions to enhance interest and expand learning Introduces poetic and narrative devices like doubling, juxtaposition, and irony within the context of scriptural art and editorial design Gives extensive attention to each biblical book, resulting in the most comprehensive introduction to literary Bible study to date Presents these materials through an accessible and lively text permeated with references to both high and popular culture Literary Study of the Bible will be a welcome addition to personal, school, college, and congregational libraries, as well as an excellent text for students of the Bible in both secular and faith-based settings.

God the Savior Bible Study Guide plus Streaming Video by Randy Frazee Pdf

God goes to great lengths to rescue lost and hurting people. In this 8-session video Bible study (streaming included), enter the culmination of God's complex plan to deliver his people in the person of Jesus Christ, our Savior. Salvation is what the story of the Bible is all about: the final goal of God's narrative. But throughout the Bible, there are two parallel dramas unfolding: The lower story, which describes the events from our human perspective. The upper story, which reveals how the events unfold from God's perspective. The goal of the God the Savior Bible study is to introduce you to these lower and upper stories as told in the New Testament. As you read these stories—featuring characters such as Mary and Joseph, the Twelve Disciples, John the Baptist, Mary Magdalene, and the central figure, Jesus Christ—you will see how God has been weaving our lower story into the greater upper story that he has been writing. This study guide has everything you need for a full Bible study experience, including: The study guide itself—with discussion and reflection questions, video notes, and Scripture readings. An individual access code to stream all eight video sessions online (you don't need to buy a DVD!). Sessions include: Jesus' Birth and Ministry (Matthew–John) Jesus, the Son of God (Matthew–John) The Hour of Darkness (Matthew–John) The Resurrection (Matthew–John) New Beginnings (Acts 1–12) Paul's Mission (Acts 13–18) Paul's Final Days (Acts 19–28) The End of Time (Revelation) The God the Savior Study Guide is part of The Story Bible Study Series: a three-part Bible study drawn from Randy Frazee's bestselling The Story, which reveals the Bible as a single, continuous narrative of God and his people. Romans: Theological Masterpiece (Volume 2) by Joseph R. Holder Pdf

Volume 2 of Joe Holder's exposition of Romans covers Romans chapters 9 through 16. The epistle to the Romans is, indeed, a "theological masterpiece." Against the dark background of man's tragic sinfulness, it paints the brilliant scene of God's gracious gift of righteousness through the Lord Jesus Christ. Then, it calls for a practical response of faith and godliness in the believer's daily walk of discipleship.
