Pauling's Legacy by Z.B. Maksic,W.J. Orville-Thomas Pdf

Theory and experiment in chemistry today provide a wealth of data, but such data have no meaning unless they are correctly interpreted by sound and transparent physical models. Linus Pauling was a grandmaster in the modelling of molecular properties. Indeed, many of his models have served chemistry for decades and that has been his lasting legacy for chemists all over the world. The aim of this book is to put such simple models into the language of modern quantum chemistry, thus providing a deeper justification for many of Pauling's ideas and concepts. However, it should be stressed that many contributions to this work, written by some of the world's most prominent theoretical chemists, do not merely follow Pauling's footprints. By taking his example, they made bold leaps forward to overcome the limitations of the old models, thereby opening new scientific vistas. This book is an important contribution to the chemical literature. It is an almost obligatory textbook for postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers in physical chemistry, chemical physics and advanced physical organic chemistry.

Quackonomics! by Ethan L. Welch M.D. Pdf

Fake news is bad enough. We cannot allow ourselves to be buried in fake medicine. This book looks at quackery practiced under the cover of CIM (Complementary and Integrative Medicine). Why? To inform the consumer that there is a better way to spend their health-care dollar. How? By a better understanding of science and the scientific method. A brief summary of the development of science is given, from early Greece, through the Dark Ages, and into the twenty-first century. This history emphasizes that the development of the scientific method originated purely in Western culture, contrary to other interpretations by Islam and the Chinese. It traces the origins of anti-science in the United States. The placebo effect, an essential part of the science of medicine, is clearly defined. The absence of science is documented in twenty-five examples of CIM from acupuncture to homeopathy, from herbal medicine to aromatherapy, from spiritual healing to iridology. The history and the departure from science are emphasized. The weakness of the literature supporting these frauds is cited as are the politics of reimbursement. A section on marijuana stresses the need to take a hard look at the perils of legalization. While researching the cost of unscientific health care (over $40 billion), I discovered quackery embedded in the system (over $100 billion), including fraud in the scientific literature, fraud in the medical profession, in Big Pharma's pricing of drugs and hospital billing fraud. The extent to which legislatures are influenced by the money pharma spends on campaigns on an annual basis was tabulated. It exposes the weakness of our response to the opioid crisis. This book will be of interest to everyone in the United States interested in the quality of their health care. The aim is not to be all-inclusive but to stimulate national dialogue.

Systems Thinking in Medicine and New Drug Discovery by Robert E. Smith Pdf

This second book in a two-volume set tells how the healthcare community is working with patients and their caregivers to help improve health using P4 medicine, proper nutrition and a healthy lifestyle. The healthcare community is finding ways to predict one’s susceptibility to diseases, so they can be prevented from occurring, when possible. When diseases do emerge, it is developing personalized therapies and ways for patients to participate in their own healthcare. At the same time, systems thinking dispels many misconceptions, such as ‘natural’ foods and ‘superfoods’. In fact, the only true superfood is mother’s breast milk. Also, dietary antioxidants prevent inflammation by activating our natural antioxidant system (Nrf2). However, environmental toxins can counteract our best efforts. Still, systems thinking encourages us to fix the problem and not the blame. This book will appeal to professionals, non-professionals and patients, who can learn how to improve healthcare and prevent diseases, while reversing the effects of global climate change.

Clouds of Deceit by Joan Smith Pdf

The full story of Britain's nuclear weapons tests in the 1950s has only recently begun to emerge. Here, for the first time, through interviews and eye-witness accounts from men who watched the mushroom clouds drift over Australia and the Pacific Ocean, the tests are vividly recreated. Using official documents recently made public, evidence gathered by the Australian government's Royal Commission of Inquiry into the tests, and her own experience as an investigative journalist, Joan Smith argues forcefully that the bomb tests are far from being a historical anecdote. They remain with us in the shape of the victims - servicemen, civilians and aborigines who witnessed them - and through Britain's continuing programme of nuclear weapons tests in the United States. In this disturbing and horrific book, first published in 1985, Joan Smith raises crucial questions about the British government's responsibility to the people who took part in the tests - and shows how their effects may yet have a devastating impact on Britain's nuclear industry.
