Automated Pavement Condition Surveys by Linda M. Pierce,Nicholas D. Weitzel Pdf

TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 531 documents agency practices, challenges, and successes in conducting automated pavement condition surveys. The report also includes three case examples that provide additional information on agency practices for conducting automated pavement surveys. Pavement condition data is a critical component for pavement management systems in state departments of transportation (DOTs). The data is used to establish budget needs, support asset management, select projects for maintenance and preservation, and more. Data collection technology has advanced rapidly over the last decade and many DOTs now use automated data collection systems.

Pavement Condition Surveys by National Research Council (U.S.). Highway Research Board Pdf

Pavement condition surveys are necessary to evaluate the effect upon pavement life and service caused by various factors such as subgrade soil of the various classifications, subgrade densification, subgrade treatments, subgrade drainage, subbase materials and methods of placing, pavement materials, pavement design, pavement construction methods, traffic, maintenance materials and methods, and climatic conditions. Pavement condition is logically measured for Portland cement concrete pavements by the condition of joints and cracks, condition of the surface, and the amount of cracking and breakage. In addition, it is logically measured for pavements of the flexible type by the amount of cracking, type of cracking, raveling, rutting, shoving, settling, bleeding, and the area and depth of patches. Skid resistance and degree of bumpiness are pavement condition factors for both rigid and flexible pavements. Various types of condition surveys are outlined and suggestions made for making them.

Pavement Management for Airports, Roads, and Parking Lots by M.Y. Shahin Pdf

Emphasizing sound, cost-effective management rather than emergency repairs, this comprehensive volume offers practical guidelines on evaluating and managing pavements for airports, roads, and parking lots. The author focuses on the implementation and maintenance of successful management strategies for both network and project levels, with repair techniques also described . Detailed chapters: 1) outline step-by-step procedures for project and network level pavement management 2) illustrate effective cost analysis and budget planning for pavement maintenance 3) guide the reader in the selection and use of non-destructive deflection, roughness measurement, and friction measurement equipment 4) present state-of-the-art pavement rehabilitation and condition prediction techniques 5) demonstrates the Pavement Condition Index (PCI) procedure for airfields and surfaced and unsurfaced roads. Extensive appendices serve as a field manual for identifying all types of pavement distress and their causes, and hundred of photographs facilitate accurate pavement evaluation. Civil and pavement engineers will find complete information on pavement inspection, evaluation, and management in this indispensable reference.
