Nursing Care in Pediatric Respiratory Disease by Concettina Tolomeo Pdf

Pediatric respiratory disorders are responsible for a number of acute and chronic health conditions and are a leading cause of pediatric emergency room visits and hospitalizations. More than ever, nurses and nurse practitioners must have an understanding of the anatomy, pathophysiology, diagnosis and state of the art treatments in pediatric respiratory disease as they are often the first to come in contact with and recognize respiratory problems in children. Nursing Care in Pediatric Respiratory Disease seeks to provide both nurses and nurse practitioners with this information in order to aid them in the diagnosis and treatment of children suffering from acute and chronic respiratory disorders. Nursing Care in Pediatric Respiratory Disease opens with an overview of the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system, best practices for assessing respiratory symptoms in children, and common respiratory therapies and treatment methods. It then proceeds through an examination of varying acute and chronic upper and lower respiratory diseases spanning from asthma and cystic fibrosis to vocal cord paralysis and sinusitis in both hospital and ambulatory settings. Nursing Care in Pediatric Respiratory Disease provides nurses and other health care providers with a comprehensive and practical resource which allows them to collaborate and advocate more effectively, as well as educate both the family and child in management of respiratory disorders.

The Respiratory Tract in Pediatric Critical Illness and Injury by Derek S. Wheeler,Hector R. Wong,Thomas P. Shanley Pdf

The principal role of the respiratory system is to permit ef? cient exchange of respiratory gases (O and CO ) with the environment. The respiratory system is unique in that it is constantly 2 2 exposed to a barrage of foreign substances from both the internal environment (at any one point in time, approximately one-half of the cardiac output is received by the lungs) and the external environment (with each breath, the respiratory tract is exposed to pollens, viruses, bacteria, smoke, etc). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, diseases of the res- ratory system were the seventh and eighth leading causes of deaths in children aged 1 to 19 years in 2003 [1]. Dr. George A. Gregory, one of the founding fathers of pediatric critical care me- cine, once estimated that acute respiratory failure accounts for nearly 50% of all admissions to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) [2]. Just as important are the many diseases that affect the respiratory system that are not associated with acute respiratory failure, but nevertheless constitute a major portion of the practice of pediatric critical care medicine, some of which account for signi? cant morbidity and mortality [3]. Once again, we would like to dedicate this textbook to our families and to the physicians and nurses who provide steadfast care every day in pediatric intensive care units across the globe. Derek S. Wheeler Hector R. Wong Thomas P.

Paediatric Respiratory Medicine by Jeremy Hull,Julian Forton,Anne Thomson Pdf

Paediatric Respiratory Medicine Second edition remains the first point of reference for those faced with treating acute or chronic respiratory problems. The handbook discusses the approach to clinical problems, specific conditions, supportive care and practical procedures, and includes vital appendices covering specific tests and statistics. Designed as a practical guide, it serves general and specialist paediatricians at both consultant and trainee level. The book is divided into five parts. Part I provides a practical approach to acute and non-acute clinical problems. Part II provides detailed information about common and more rare clinical conditions. Part III provides useful information on supportive care, including for example, use of non-invasive ventilation and the care of a child with a tracheotomy. Part IV gives details on how to perform several practical procedures, such as ciliary brush biopsy, flexible bronchoscopy, and inserting a chest drain. The appendices provide information on lung function testing and tables of age-corrected normal values for several respiratory parameters. Written by three consultants in paediatric respiratory medicine, their expertise in the subject provides all levels of paediatricians with practical guide on a subject that is increasingly relevant in paediatrics.
