Pen, Pencil and Poison a Study in Green by Oscar Wilde Pdf

It has constantly been made a subject of reproach against artists and men of letters that they are lacking in wholeness and completeness of nature. As a rule this must necessarily be so. That very concentration of vision and intensity of purpose which is the characteristic of the artistic temperament is in itself a mode of limitation. To those who are preoccupied with the beauty of form nothing else seems of much importance. Yet there are many exceptions to this rule. Rubens served as ambassador, and Goethe as state councillor, and Milton as Latin secretary to Cromwell. Sophocles held civic office in his own city; the humourists, essayists, and novelists of modern America seem to desire nothing better than to become the diplomatic representatives of their country; and Charles Lamb's friend, Thomas Griffiths Wainewright, the subject of this brief memoir, though of an extremely artistic temperament, followed many masters other than art, being not merely a poet and a painter, an art-critic, an antiquarian, and a writer of prose, an amateur of beautiful things, and a dilettante of things delightful, but also a forger of no mean or ordinary capabilities, and as a subtle and secret poisoner almost without rival in this or any age.

Pen, Pencil, and Poison by Oscar Wilde Pdf

‘Pen, Pencil, and Poison’ is one of Wilde’s most intriguing essays. Part biography, part social commentary, and part philosophical debate, he writes the biography of an art critic, who was also convicted of murder. However, in true Wildean style, there’s more to the essay than meets the eye. While documenting the life and crimes of Thomas Griffiths Wainwright, Wilde explores the ideas of dual identity, sin in the formation of the personality, and the relationship between crime and culture. ‘Pen, Pencil, and Poison’ is a fascinating insight into some of the conventions of the time. Oscar Wilde (1854 – 1900) was an Irish novelist, poet, playwright, and wit. He was an advocate of the Aesthetic movement, which extolled the virtues of art for the sake of art. During his career, Wilde wrote nine plays, including ‘The Importance of Being Earnest,’ ‘Lady Windermere’s Fan,’ and ‘A Woman of No Importance,’ many of which are still performed today. His only novel, ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ was adapted for the silver screen, in the film, ‘Dorian Gray,’ starring Ben Barnes and Colin Firth. In addition, Wilde wrote 43 poems, and seven essays. His life was the subject of a film, starring Stephen Fry.

PEN, Pencil, and Poison: a Study in Green by Oscar Wilde Pdf

Oscar Wilde (1854 - 1900) was an Irish writer and poet. After writing in different forms throughout the 1880s, he became one of London's most popular playwrights in the early 1890s. He is remembered for his epigrams, his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, his plays, and the circumstances of his imprisonment and early death.n Pen, Pencil and Poison: A Study in Green, Wilde identifies with the artist, forger and poisoner Thomas Griffiths Wainewright . In Wilde's portrait of Wainewright, artistic sensibility and rebellion against society are two sides of the same coin. Wainewright, Wilde noted, "had that curious love of green, which in individuals is always the sign of a subtle artistic temperament, and in nations is said to denote a laxity, if not a decadence of morals."Synthetic green was created with arsenic during the Victorian era, so the poisoner Wainewright had even more reason to like the colour.

Intentions by Oscar Wilde Pdf

Intentions Initially published in 1891 when Wilde was at the peak of his writing career, these splendid articles on art, writing, literature, criticism, and society show the confident poseur's well-known mind and wide learning. The main representative of the English Esthetic development, Wilde promoted "art for art's sake" against critics who contended that art should dive into the morals of every human being. On each page of this assortment, the skilled artistic beautician splendidly exhibits not only the attributes of art are "distinction, charm, beauty, and imaginative power," in addition to that, criticism itself can be raised to a fine art having these very characteristics. In the initial article, Wilde regrets the " decay of Lying as an art, a science, and a social pleasure." He berates present-day artistic pragmatists like Henry James and Emile Zola for their " monstrous worship of facts" and smothering of the creative mind. What makes craftsmanship awesome, he says, is that it is "absolutely indifferent to fact, [art] invents, imagines, dreams, and keeps between herself and reality the impenetrable barrier of beautiful style, of decorative or ideal treatment."The following article, "Pen, Pencil, and Poison," is an entrancing artistic enthusiasm for the existence of Thomas Griffiths Wainewright, a gifted painter, art critic, classicist, fellow of Charles Lamb, and - a murderer. The core of the collection is the long two-section article named "The Critic as Artist." In an endless series of important entries, Wilde takes incredible measures to show that the pundit is just as much a craftsman as the craftsman himself, sometimes more so. A skilled critic resembles a virtuoso mediator: "When Rubinstein plays ... he gives us not merely Beethoven, but also himself, and so gives us Beethoven absolutely...made vivid and wonderful to us by a new and intense personality. When a great actor plays Shakespeare we have the same experience" At long last, in "The Truth of Masks," Wilde gets back to the topic of art as artifice and creative deception. This article centers around the utilization of veils, camouflages, and outfits in Shakespeare. For novices to Wilde and the people who know his popular plays and fiction, this brilliant assortment of his analysis offers many pleasures.

Wilde's Intentions by Lawrence Danson Pdf

What were Wilde's intentions? They had always been suspect, from the time of Poems, when the charge was plagiarism, to his trials, when the charge was sodomy. In Intentions (1891), the book on which his claim as a theoretical critic chiefly lies, and in two related essays, `The Portrait of MrW. H.' and `The Soul of Man Under Socialism', Wilde's epigrammatic dazzle and paradoxical subversions both reveal and mask his designs upon fin-de-siecle society. In the first extended study of Wilde's criticism, Lawrence Danson examines these essays/dialogues/fictions (unsettling the categories wasone of their intentions) and assesses their achievement. Danson sets Wilde's criticism in context. He shows how the son of an Irish patriot sought to create a new ideal of English culture by elevating `lies' above history, levelling the distinction between artist and critic, and ending the sway of`nature' over liberated human desire.

Style and the Nineteenth-Century British Critic by Professor Jason Camlot Pdf

In analyzing the nonfiction works of writers such as John Wilson, J. S. Mill, De Quincy, Ruskin, Arnold, Pater, and Wilde, Jason Camlot provides an important context for the nineteenth-century critic's changing ideas about style, rhetoric, and technologies of communication. In particular, Camlot contributes to our understanding of how new print media affected the Romantic and Victorian critic's sense of self, as he elaborates the ways nineteenth-century critics used their own essays on rhetoric and stylistics to speculate about the changing conditions for the production and reception of ideas and the formulation of authorial character. Camlot argues that the early 1830s mark the moment when a previously coherent tradition of pragmatic rhetoric was fragmented and redistributed into the diverse, localized sites of an emerging periodicals market. Publishing venues for writers multiplied at midcentury, establishing a new stylistic norm for criticism-one that affirmed style as the manifestation of English discipline and objectivity. The figure of the professional critic soon subsumed the authority of the polyglot intellectual, and the later decades of the nineteenth century brought about a debate on aesthetics and criticism that set ideals of Saxon-rooted 'virile' style against more culturally inclusive theories of expression.

The Soul of Man Under Socialism and Selected Critical Prose by Oscar Wilde Pdf

Selection includes The Portrait of Mr W.H., Wilde's defence of Dorian Gray, reviews, and the writings from 'Intentions' (1891): 'The Decay of Lying, 'Pen, Pencil, Poison', and 'The Critic as Artist'. Wilde is familiar to us as the ironic critic behind the social comedies, as the creator of the beautiful and doomed Dorian Gray, as the flamboyant aesthete and the demonised homosexual. This volume presents us with a different Wilde. Wilde emerges here as a deep and serious reader of literature and philosophy, and an eloquent and original thinker about society and art.
