People of the Body by Howard Eilberg-Schwartz Pdf

By shifting attention from the image of Jews as a textual community to the ways Jews understand and manage their bodies — for example, to their concerns with reproduction and sexuality, menstruation and childbirth— this volume contributes to a revisioning of what Jews and Judaism are and have been. The project of re-membering the Jewish body has both historical and constructive motivations. As a constructive project, this book describes, renews, and participates in the complex and ongoing modern discussion about the nature of Jewish bodies and the place of bodies in Judaism.

Her Body Can is a book for girls and those who love them. It celebrates the wonders and uniqueness of who we are and who we want to be. Our worth isn’t a matter of looks, we see, because we’re so much more than that. Through engaging rhymes and vibrant artwork, this picture book finds a warm, inviting way to communicate powerful truths about what we’re capable of, what we can do, and how we can live our dreams, regardless of our body’s shape or size or what others think about us. We know we’re free to think, act, and be without worry or judgment. We have opinions, voices, and the ability to choose our own way, while loving ourselves exactly as we are. Her Body Can reminds every one of us to be true to who we are as we create our paths. We can do anything, and our lives are full of possibilities when we embrace our bodies and souls and live without limits. Attention: People with Body Parts by Lexie Bean Pdf

This is a book of letters. Letters to our body parts. Uncensored, Attention: People With Body Parts traces naked bodies with naked language. The project started in the summer of 2012, in which more than forty people were asked to speak to their finger nails, their skin, their cancer. These are the parts that carry stories and histories that layer our lives. They make the individual self-construct and self-destruct, and ultimately make us move. Attention: People With Body Parts has expanded to an online and outreach movement to increase its accessibility to all people (with body parts). www.attnpeoplewithbodyparts.org

What Can a Body Do? by Sara Hendren Pdf

Named a Best Book of the Year by NPR and LitHub Winner of the 2021 Science in Society Journalism Book Prize A fascinating and provocative new way of looking at the things we use and the spaces we inhabit, and a call to imagine a better-designed world for us all. Furniture and tools, kitchens and campuses and city streets—nearly everything human beings make and use is assistive technology, meant to bridge the gap between body and world. Yet unless, or until, a misfit between our own body and the world is acute enough to be understood as disability, we may never stop to consider—or reconsider—the hidden assumptions on which our everyday environment is built. In a series of vivid stories drawn from the lived experience of disability and the ideas and innovations that have emerged from it—from cyborg arms to customizable cardboard chairs to deaf architecture—Sara Hendren invites us to rethink the things and settings we live with. What might assistance based on the body’s stunning capacity for adaptation—rather than a rigid insistence on “normalcy”—look like? Can we foster interdependent, not just independent, living? How do we creatively engineer public spaces that allow us all to navigate our common terrain? By rendering familiar objects and environments newly strange and wondrous, What Can a Body Do? helps us imagine a future that will better meet the extraordinary range of our collective needs and desires.

Fearing the Black Body by Sabrina Strings Pdf

Winner, 2020 Body and Embodiment Best Publication Award, given by the American Sociological Association Honorable Mention, 2020 Sociology of Sex and Gender Distinguished Book Award, given by the American Sociological Association How the female body has been racialized for over two hundred years There is an obesity epidemic in this country and poor black women are particularly stigmatized as “diseased” and a burden on the public health care system. This is only the most recent incarnation of the fear of fat black women, which Sabrina Strings shows took root more than two hundred years ago. Strings weaves together an eye-opening historical narrative ranging from the Renaissance to the current moment, analyzing important works of art, newspaper and magazine articles, and scientific literature and medical journals—where fat bodies were once praised—showing that fat phobia, as it relates to black women, did not originate with medical findings, but with the Enlightenment era belief that fatness was evidence of “savagery” and racial inferiority. The author argues that the contemporary ideal of slenderness is, at its very core, racialized and racist. Indeed, it was not until the early twentieth century, when racialized attitudes against fatness were already entrenched in the culture, that the medical establishment began its crusade against obesity. An important and original work, Fearing the Black Body argues convincingly that fat phobia isn’t about health at all, but rather a means of using the body to validate race, class, and gender prejudice.
